Carmax is not like other dealerships. That statement carries both a positive & negative connotation. Unlike other dealerships, Carmax is no haggle. So if youre someone whos looking for a unique car or someone who just wants to hear the best price, Carmax is perfect. If you like the car & price, you can buy. If you dont like you can look at something else or go elsewhere. There is no need to wait for a sales manager to make a 2nd or 3rd offer. Makes it speedy. The Carmax staff...at least the ones I dealt with...all offered EXCEPTIONAL customer service. Im not the easiest customer to deal with. The staff, while their patients were tried, never gave up on making me feel like a star. Brandy was amazing. Manager Tonia was awesome. I dont think enough positive vibes get posted online & I wanted to make sure to give a complete picture of my experience not just be negative. So the bad. Like many others, my trade was RIDICULOUSLY low balled. When I originally went to Carmax, I had a 11 BMW X6. It mint. It had 30K mikes as of Feb 2016. I had been looking around, thinking of trading it in. Took it to 3 local dealerships&got trade offers between $34K-$36K. Carmax offered $24K. 24K!?Sadly, that vehicle was totaled a few weeks after that. My insurance gave me$37K for it. Carmax is simply not competitive with trades. I cant imagine ever trading a vehicle in there. I have read countless horror stories expressing the same sentiment. Now the most heinous of all experiences at was the financing. I am a former financing manager with 20yrs financing experience. So when I submitted my application for financing, I was quite shocked at the horrible terms they were offering. Some were even asking for up to $15K down on a $41K vehicle. It stated due to income limitations. My debt to income ratio is less than 10% before the car payment and more like 15% after. Most lenders agree that 25-30% is EXCELLENT for a DTI...and I was half of that, yet being restricted. The lenders that would accept my downpayment of $5K wanted high interest rates. My credit isnt perfect, but it is fair. When I requested an explanation, I was stonewalled. Carmax explained that they cannot provide explanations. They simply send the app in and it is what it is. There was no room to negotiate or even get an explanation. I explained this made no sense. Perhaps there is something incorrect they are seeing. I had my credit report and my scores. So I knew what I was looking at and what kind of rate I could expect. The worst of these lenders was Capital One. Who made an initial offer when I ordered my vehicle to be transferred to Carmax from CA and rescinded the offer when I came to take delivery. They said that the offer was good for 30 days and that day was day 31. No exceptions. When I called Capital One myself to find out what was going on, I was told they would be happy to discuss the financing, but I would have to have the sales manager call in, as that was the policy for their dealer applications. Fair enough. But when Tonia called in, they refused to discuss it with her. I called back and was told that was incorrect and have Tonia call again. She did and she was stonewalled yet again. Carmaxs philosophy when it comes to financing is atrocious. I understand you are not the bank and you do not determine the interest rates. I will even accept that there is no ability to negotiate, though with regular dealerships...there is almost always room. What I cannot accept is when I ask why a specific rate or specific stip or a payment limit...I deserve an answer. The end result was I took delivery and accepted the poor terms. When I received my credit denials from the lenders, I then discovered the issue. All the credit scores they had were WRONG. I had an issue with my report and I got it straightened out and my scores went WAY up after. They had been over 100 points higher for 2 weeks. These lenders were using the old credit report, eventhough Carmax assurred me they pulled my credit again. Terrible!

My name is William McQuay. Today, along with my co-applicant we experienced the absolute worst car buying experience at CarMax of Mechanisburg, PA. And thats putting it lightly. After a week of back and forth and 1 already displeasing encounter with a sales person employed there named Kaitlyn we were approved for A Volkswagen CC and now dealing with a salesperson by the name of Kris. Our salesperson advised us of all the necessary items to bring today to finalize the car purchase. We brung every item needed and were belittled and embarrassed. They asked us both to bring last 30 days of paystubs, utility bill, references and insurance. Here is where it gets really disrespectful. Upon giving them paystubs from both of my FULL-TIME and jobs. It was as if they didnt believe any of my documents or were real. My co-applicant printed her paystubs from their computer system and that STILL wasnt good enough. They asked me to print out my Bank statement to prove I deposited these 4 paystub amounts into my account and somehow That STILL wasnt good enough. My co-applicant was advised that her paystubs werent recent enough and that the hours worked on them had to be within 30 calendar days. WHEN THEY ABSOLUTELY WERE . And the final straw was when they asked me to print out my prior year tax return to prove I was employed at one of my jobs through the last year. If that wasnt enough proof for them they were more than welcome to call and verify employment like most places do. We called CarMax of Lancaster, PA and were advised that this was not standard and as long as our paystubs were printed from our employers intranet site (which they were) things shouldve went smooth. Im not sure they wanted to sell us a car to begin with at CarMax of Mechanisburg, PA and I dont want to pull the race card but today definitely felt like one of those experiences.

I found the exact car I wanted and had it transferred in to this location. Sales consultant DeVaughna was great through the whole process. I agree about the very low trade-in values, however, if you need a great price on your existing car, you can always sell it before going in to make your purchase. My experience with the entire staff was wonderful. Each department was super friendly and accommodating. Most of the time was spent completing paperwork and the team took care of all the details around that. They explained what each set of documents was for and handled all the details. I did not require financing so I have no experience of what that part would be like. From what my experience was for the rest of the process, I would assume that part would go smoothly as well, if your financial profile is good. So check your credit and get competing lender offers before going in. The other reviews are correct in their "no haggling" assertions. There is no haggling. For anything. The price is what the price is, the trade-in is what it is, the rates offered are what they are. So if you are okay with those terms (which I personally prefer), youll have a good experience. Overall, go prepared, know what you want, get your competing lender offers, and find the car of your dreams, while someone else does the paperwork. Highly recommended.
