My boyfriend and I are both animal people and have lots of different kinds of pets. We were looking for a cage-mate for our gerbil. We found this pet store online and decided to drive the 45+ minutes to check it out. What we found was appalling. This is the most disgusting pet store Ive ever been in. The smell when you first walk in is overwhelming. We first looked at the "puppies" in the back of the store (Im familiar with some of the breeds they were trying to sell and believe me, they were not 10-week old puppies as claimed) and when the employee opened the door, the smell about gagged me..it reeked of urine and feces. The dogs were also kept in very small cages with nothing soft to sleep on and no toys or anything to keep them entertained. It was just wire cages. It looked more like I was at the Humane Society rather than at a pet store looking at dogs that cost anywhere from $500-$875. We then moved on to the small animal and reptile area. The animals were kept in terrible conditions. When we looked at the gerbils they had, one of them was covered in blood. When we showed our concern, the employee told us, "Oh. Theyve just been fighting"...and walked away. I cant imagine selling an animal that was injured. In addition, although this store does have a very large selection of reptiles, snakes, and spiders, they are kept in awful conditions. The tarantulas were kept in containers the size of sour cream tubs and barely had enough room to move, let alone turn around. The sides of the containers were also covered in filth. All in all, I would never recommend this store to anyone and I will certainly never consider shopping there again.

Upon going into this establishment I noticed that the smell in the store had changed, from pryor visits, to a horrible unclean smell. It is apparent that this place is not kept clean. Then to my unhappy surprise, I noticed that they sell puppies here. They are kept way in the back of the store. Responsible breeders do NOT sell their puppies to pet stores and responsible pet store owners do NOT sell puppies at all. Most of all puppies sold in pet stores come from puppymills or backyard breeders. Females are bred over and over again. They are not socialized, and rarely, if ever see a vet, and are kept locked up. Irresponsible breeders and store owners who sell the pups are just in it for the money. If this establishment loved and cared about dogs - this would not be going on. Many pet store owners dont even realize that what they are doing by selling the puppies is encouraging millers and backyard breeders to continue on breeding and breeding their dogs. Due to my dismay at the smell and uncleanliness, and because I want puppymills/backyard breeders to not exist anymore, I will not longer frequent this store.

I have shop at this place for years before and after the new owners and have notice it kinda depends on who is there and the service your going to get. If the new owner is helping you then you can expect ok service if you dont mind being help by gothic looking really pale female with mutable face piercing and her breasts hanging half way out of her top. If the younger female staff members are helping you it can be even more of a toss up. You might get good service or you might get some little underage girl trying to flirt with you if so just turn and walk away. Also there prices are really high you can find most products on amazon for half the price even with shipping. The previous owners were great except if you know something about fish and disagree with something they say then it becomes a pissing contest of knowledge back and forth. Dont make the mistake of saying well the guy at other pet shop said. Also dont fall for the oh this small critter lives longer if it has a friend it is better if you buy two of them. sale pitch

They sold me a sick guinea pig. Last week I bought 2 guinea pigs. One of them was listless and wouldnt eat. When I petted her, I noticed some rather large bumps on her back. They said to bring her back in. When I did, they said they couldnt do anything without the receipt. I must not have been given one, as I always hold onto them no matter what. They wouldnt even let me have another one to replace her. I said Id print out a copy of my credit card statement, showing how much I was billed. They accused me of fraud, that I could have bought something else for $40 and was trying to use that receipt to get a refund. I was very upset! I told them to keep the guinea pig and to use the $20 to take her to the vet and get her some help. They probably kept the money, and resold the guinea pig to some other unsuspecting customer. Good luck to anyone who shops there, and buyer beware. Also the guinea pigs were infested with lice or fleas. Ive had to keep treating her over and over again.

This was the first fish store I found when I moved out to the Seattle area. I bought baby angelfish from them, and of all the other angelfish in all the other stores, this store had the very best angels. I mean, if you have any experience with the conditions most small angelfish are in by the time theyre in the shop, most of them are already stunted from over crowding, but these ones were still very young, nickle-sized and not stunted at all. They grew out to be bigger than my hand and even paired off and bred. They also have an incredible variety of algae eater type fish, AND Kevin, who I assume owns or runs the shop, knows and can recommend fish for you if you have a specific tank set up you are going for. They can, and have, been extremely good to me whenever I went in. Im a little offended at the copy-pasted "puppymill" hate speech on this review board for this shop. I dont actually recall there being much in the way of puppies or kittens here.

I am a good friend, and a long time customer of Kevins. I know for a fact that they dont buy their puppies from puppy mills, and never would. Maybe you should make sure that your diarrhea is under control, before you open your mouth.
As far as the smell goes, its pretty obvious that you have never been to Midway pets.
A Place For Pets is by far superior to every other pet store, chain or not. Kevin knows alot about Cichlids because they are a passion of his. Ask him about his trip to Africias lake Malawi, and what it was like to swim with and actually experience first hand African Cichlids in their own enviroment.
Sean has the same passion and expertise for saltwater fish.
Every employee at A Place For Pets shares that same passion about their own pets, and would be more that happy to help you with yours.
Thanks, Rob

One time I went there and the small animal and fish help was great...once. We had a slightly larger, sort of nerdy gal help us (not trying to be mean, those are compliments!). So we went back, and the same gal was nice, but everything else kinda sucked. High prices (but i know it is hard to compete with big box stores), super long line waits, and poor upkeep of the rat cages. And oh god then I made the mistake of trying to talk to the groomer a few times. This woman is harsh and rude, and the couple of finished dogs I saw leave while I waited in line were an ABSOLUTE JOKE. This place is okay if you need a specialty product or questions answered about a pet, the staff did seem knowledgable. But avoid the grooming like the plague.
