(Yes, I went inside too--see edit below) Ive been riding and touring for many years and have been in countless bike shops across the country, but have never been talked to the way the guy at Defiance talked to me today. I was ready to buy, cash in hand. I told him I wanted a separate, less expensive bike for commuting. He snapped, "Im so tired of people like you asking that stupid question. Just buy a lock." I told him I didnt want to park a $2,400 road bike in downtown DC where there is rampant bike theft, U-Lock notwithstanding. He asked if I was going to spend more than a thousand dollars on a bike there. Not from them. Edit: Yes, I did go into the store later (without announcing I was the guy who called) and was met with the same attitude. But, the response counts for something and the hipster comment was petty, so Im adding a star.

another store recommended these guys to me for a commuter helmet. I was hesitant cuz the place seemed unapproachably hip and im insecure. usually bike shops make me feel a little out of place when theyre too techie and professionablahblahblah but golly i was comfortable in there. guy knew what he was doing, eased me through the purchase, reassured me that i wasnt totally ridiculous looking in the helmet. nice relaxed feeling, and though totally a cool place, i still felt welcome. hooked me up with a handsome fender that i wasnt expecting on the way in too. good prices, and yeah id pay b&m prices at a place like this cuz i got schooled a bit too. go there-be happy-love tacoma.

Im a pretty chill guy so Im naturally drawn to surly bikes, especially since out of all the rides Ive done back home, trail riders are the most easy group of cyclists to get along with. Shoutout to Joe from Tacoma bikes who recommended Defiance and was kind enough to give me directions. Youre doing a great job with the shop Chris! Thank you for being patient enough to explain the Wednesday and fat bikes to me and if my wife hadnt come along (with the prospect of having to endure a deafening silence on the drive home), I wouldve swiped my plastic and left with my Surly. LOL. Ill come back for it within the week!! pls hang on to it for me. Peace!

Great little shop with an awesome feel to it. If you are new to cycling or bicycle commuting all the guys will stand with you answering all of your questions. If you are looking for a new road bike, they dont have a huge selection but it is still pretty good for the size of the store. They mostly stock Kona bikes, which are great and very high quality bikes but i would like to see more variety. All in all, this is a great store and if you are in the market for a new bike or for service you defiantly need to check these guys out, everybody is awesome that works there!

Best bike shop in Tacoma. Not only does Defiance have a great selection of new/used parts and accessories, but knowledgeable friendly service. No other shop in Tacoma has the selection or experience when it comes to fixed gear bikes. I dropped off my bike at 5:45 to have a headset, bottom bracket, cranks and chain installed. The shop closed at 6:00 and I got a call at 6:20 telling me my bike was ready to be picked up. That is how a shop should work! PLUS, Chris recovered my bike after it was stolen. It doesnt get any better than that.

GOOD SMART PEOPLE - and they smile! For this "Once upon a time" 25-mile-per-day bicycle commuter, now riding an old mans electric tricycle, these people are a Godsend, the cream of the crop: patient, helpful and thorough. Zero shortcuts taken, great quality inventory, an excellent mechanic.... contagious smiles and Brooks saddles. What more could an elderly (going on 11-years-old) wannabe tricycle racer ask for? My Rocinante E-Trike iz my ADA mobility device, (wheelchair) built for fun. These guys sure do help keep the fun in it.

I went there to get some new grips and the guy suggested I go out on the sidewalk and do a couple circles just to make sure I needed them. He didnt just grab some grips off the shelves and say "these are popular, would that be cash or credit?" Its a small shop. Probably not the place to buy a bike seeing as its so small but this is going to be the first place I go when I need my bike fixed or need a new part. Very friendly and sincere guy. Now you can get your bike fixed on your way to the Grand!!

Went to Defiance to get my front tire fixed. I fully expected to leave the tire for the week as I had previously at another local bike shop. Chris figured out what was wrong and replaced my tire within 15 minutes. Mind you, this was at 6:30 PM on a Saturday. I was able to ride again the following day. Awesome service and very knowledgeable... Will recommend to my friends and will definitely come back again for any future service or repairs.

Ive been a bike shop junkie for as long as I can remember and count Chris shop as one of my favorites. His bicycle knowledge is top notch and hes always got the latest on the local happenings. I dont get into the shop as often as I would like (Vashon Islander) and I am by no means a "regular" but Chris always remembers me and has a story. Good vibe, for sure.

All of the knowledge, none of the ego. You know that bike shop that has over priced bikes, few parts, and seem to only say "well we could order that for you"? This is not that bike shop. Defiance somehow always seem to be able to find a solution, and you leave there feeling like you got what you needed, and just had a lot of fun.

Went for basic repair. Left SMH. Have to assume the language I spoke a foreign tongue so cut my losses and bagged it. Wont be going back for my brand new ride come Spring. Oh well. Under the guise of "process of elimination," this peculiarly awkward customer service encounter a worthy endeavor regardless.

Helpful and reasonably priced. I went into the store today to pick up a bike lock that was reviewed on the website. I was highly impressed with Chris knowledge and attention to what everyday bicycle riders need out of their equipment. I will definitely be back.

Chris and team are top notch. I bought a Surly there and then my dad did. They are very attentive to finding the bike that fits your needs and are always there to answer questions or help long beyond the purchase. Go local, go to defiance cycles.

Best bike shop in Tacoma. I do most of my own repairs, but on the occasion I need help, nobody does it better than these guys.
