Wish that I could give zero rating!!! I just did an appraisal of a 2009 Ford King Ranch truck with all the options and 99100 miles on it, and the appraiser at this carmax store in San Antonio, Tx , calculated it at $15000. Carmax in Austin, Tx has a similar truck - a 2012 Ford King Ranch truck with 117,000 miles (18 K miles more than mine) FOR SALE AT $27998.00 !! The last conversation I had with a Carmax rep, he told me that the average profit for Carmax was around $1800 to $2000 per vehicle, which is around 10 to 13 % profit, very standard in vehicles profit margins. This conversation was back in 2015 and I did sell a Mazda CX-5 to carmax and did get an average offer, which for the rapidity of the transaction, it does make sense to sell it to Carmax or Texas direct when one wants to sell fast. So there has to be some kind of new corporate protocol to make store managers low ball these vehicles. No way a truck like this is worth 50 % less than the market value of carguru -which has it at an average of $22700, and Carmax has various trucks - King Ranch for sale at very high prices. This means now Carmax wants to make a profit margin in trucks for 50 % +, this is way out of line with consumer guidelines. Is this the new 2016 Carmax – Kelly management alliance protocol. The car max rep gave me 2 offers, one for Carmax at $15,000 and one from Kelly book at $12000.00 !!! what was this all about? another drop of 25 % from a partner? Never seen this before. There has to be some kind of new company protocol in abusing the public in a manner where the average person doesn’t know anything about car values. I was sitting next to an elderly couple, probably in their middle 70”s, and the sales person was driving the whole process to a point of making them buy a car that was way above the average car price. I wanted to step in and advise this couple, but I didn’t. There was another couple with a baby child, they must have been in their early 20’s, and they also looked like spooked deer, so sad to see this kind of car sales tactics coming from carmax- a company that was founded with the mind set of not bullying the public to buy cars with excessive tactics. Sure looks like the JV between these Businesses was set up to exceed the usual Profit margins in selling cars.

Poor Customer Service after the sale, sales dept did not want to deal with the issue gave it to service dept. Mr. Jimmy Salazar. Purchased Truck December 3, 2016. What a hassle the Dodge has a tow package.....but no hitch, ball, nothing. Hello Mr. Salazar, I have already spoken to you in regards to the tow hitch for my truck. I am assuming that the CarMax of San Diego, Kearney Mesa decided not to place a tow hitch on my vehicle even though it was purchased with a tow hitch that wasnt there. As I stated I was not aware that the vehicle was supposed to be sold to me with a tow hitch attached it was on the Sticker in the window folded up and being that there is no tow hitch attached I would assume that it is the responsibility of the company to ensure that I receive what I paid for. There is no need to point fingers but I do strongly feel that I should either be reimbursed or have a tow hitch assembled to my vehicle. I would like to get this matter taken care as soon as reasonably possible. However, the option to drive back to the location where I purchased the vehicle in San Antonio is not an option. I hope this matter can be addressed soon and that we can find a resolution as well as I have already done a lot just to get my vehicle registered in the state of California. This whole purchase has been more of a hassle than I originally hoped it would have been. I was under the impression that the whole concept behind CarMax was that your company takes the “haggle” out of buying a car and that everything was straight forward, well that has been the opposite of my experience with your company. I had to pay an additional $1800 to get my truck registered as CarMax San Antonio did not set aside enough money for me to get my truck registered in California, brake & light inspection, smogged, had to get it weighed another inspection @ the DMV Additionally, I am not blaming you and I know that this issue is not your fault but it does need to be addressed, I hope that you can assist me and if not please let me know and I will contact a higher level to get my issues addressed. Thank you for your time. Best Regards, James L. Ward

After an incredibly satisfying experience with the CarMax on I-10, I expected the BEST. And it started that way. Found a car; pleasant sales person, however the car had brake problems and had to be put in the shop. It was in the shop for 3-4 days and we asked if we could just come down and complete the paperwork so that everything would be ready when it came out. We were told that CarMax wouldnt allow a sale while the car was in the shop. I dont think anyone ever went through this car before it was put on the lot. In addition to brake problems, the original owners insurance card was in the glove box and their cell phone information, contact list, etc. was still in the cars system. That would have been okay; just a couple of oversights, however, I went to the trouble of getting pre-approved for a low interest credit union loan only to be pushed into a high interest, payday type loan on CarMaxs 3 for free boondoggle. We were also told to purchase a $500 deductible insurance policy when we normally choose $1000 as this was what ALL lenders would require. They dont. We left CarMax immediately and went to the credit union to complete the loan paperwork and transfer the loan to the lender we had chosen originally. We spent FIVE HOURS with this mess. And we still now have to correct the insurance AGAIN and the original lender is still calling. This all felt pretty creepy. On top of it all, CarMax says they will buy your old car, but what they are saying is "We will pay you less than the scrap metal value of your car and you will be grateful not to have to deal with it again." Blue book for the car was $2400; they offered $300. Next time, its the dealer, where they will not treat you like a bad credit risk if youre not and will accept a trade in at a reasonable value. Plus, we have to now go get the recall work done at the dealer since CarMax cant do that. Very troublesome experience. Wont be doing any more business at CarMax and cant recommend that anyone do anything but go and drive the variety of cars that CarMax has on their lots and then find the car somewhere else.

After a wonderful experience at a Carmax in Vegas 8 years ago, I had a frustrating experience at this location. The car I initially went in to see-the car that had been held for me-had broken air conditioning. Obviously I didnt even take it for a test drive. My husband found a different car, I test drove it, and ended up wanting to buy it. My sales associate was NOT knowledgeable, had considerable difficulty navigating her way through the computer system, was unable to spell (things like my occupation, etc), and appeared frazzled and needed assistance from others frequently. I did not get what I felt was a fair offer for my trade in, but I didnt have the time or energy to try to sell it on my own, which I believe is what they are hoping happens. The day I went in to pick up my car, the sales associate continued to have difficulty processing through the computer system. She asked if I had gotten everything out of my car; I said I had to get the car seat and some other items. She said, "Well go get them". I asked if I could wait until the new car was pulled around and she said, no, I could just put it all on the floor of the building. So, I went out and gathered all my items. No help was offered in carrying my large car seat across the parking lot. The final straw is that one of the key fobs was not working. My sales associate said she would put in a work order and I would have a new one in a week. I asked for a number to call just in case, and she seemed flustered, and said, "Well, usually they call you, but here it is". Over a week later, I called and was told the car should not even had been for sale if it did not have all its working parts. The "work order" was not filled out correctly, and there was no new key fob for me. I now have to go back into Carmax within a very limited window of time that the sales rep for key fobs (?) is there to get the new fob set for my car. Overall, I am VERY unhappy with my experience. Customer service was so limited; I never felt like a valued customer, and I will NOT return to a Carmax due to this experience.
