This sport cycling continues to evolve with new lighter materials and frames capable of withstanding outrageous punishment from potholes, road debris and rider error. The stress and torque values that seem normal to us today was the stuff of magic less than a decade ago. Add a large rider (200#) on one of these machines…well the values now get exponential. So when looking for a new frame late last year, researching new frames become the object of a few hours of study. We all talk to other riders and get their feedback on likes, dislikes and feel, and try to process the information so that we at least feel that we are making an informed decision. Then you go to your favorite bike shop, and discuss the topic even more, get their input and compile all of that research and select a new ride. My choice, with the guidance from Clark Butcher at Victory Bicycle Studio in Memphis was the 2016 Pinarello Dogma F8. The lines and design of the frame, the materials and the finish all scream Italian Made and are as much a piece of art as a world champion cycling frame. When combined with ENVE Wheels, on a Black on Black Pinarello frame, it’s easy to understand why the Italians make the best suits, meals, wines and bicycles. This beast demands the rider crush corners, don’t you dare slow down, TAKE IT and accelerate…NOW! There is nothing like it on the road for cornering, rider feel and looks. You can imagine my distress when a problem developed with the PInarello, a serious problem, that was the first time occurrence in North America. The first stress fracture of this type in the US. After recovering from the initial disappointment, sadness and depression that only a cyclist would understand, I was on the phone with Clark. It was one of those moments that we all dread in life when we know there are two potential outcomes and you hope for the best. Clark got the ball rolling with PInarello immediately and was non-stop for the next few days, (BTW these were his days off). As my advocate, working through the warranty process. To complicate things just a bit more. it was the first week of the Giro d’Italia so I was prepared that the process might take some time. Clarks relationship with PInarello proved invaluable as in less than five days, Pinarello authorized a full replacement of the frame. After a quick transfer of the components I’m back on the road again, enjoying the skill and magnificence of Italian workmanship. So does it matter where you purchase a bicycle or are they all the same, just selling different brands? How many shop owners would jump in on a prior sale in your behalf, on their day(s) off for you? Do you get expert advice when you are considering a purchase? Does the staff know you on a first name basis? And are that owner and his staff cyclists? If you can’t answer yes to all of these questions you’re at the wrong shop. Victory Bicycle Studio on Broad Avenue in Memphis, remember that name when you need anything cycling, and thank you Clark for being there and taking great care of me.

I recently purchased my second bike from Clark at Victory Bicycle Studio. I have been telling everyone I know that they need to go see the friendly crew up at Victory before they buy a bike. I was impressed by the very professional treatment that I received when I was looking to buy my first mountain bike. I knew that I wanted a Kona when I went to the shop and then Clark talked me into the best model for me, which was my second choice before showing up. My experience at Victory was the first time ever that I was properly sized up on a bike; the time was taken not only to determine what size frame I needed (which is not as relevant to height as most bike sellers will tell you), but to figure out the proper riding posture for my body, including adjustments to the stem length, stem height, and seat post height as we were determining proper fit with the input from my personal preference and their cycling expertise. I now have a Kona Honzo and a Scott Sub10 both purchased at Victory. my first experience was so great I will probably never go elsewhere for a new bike unless I was getting a custom frame built. If you ever wondered what a real bike shop was like, this is the one you have been looking for. It means a lot to be given the proper treatment when bike shopping, especially when it is by a staff of guys so passionate about what they do. Its definitely more than just a business, you need to go see for yourself.

I had the pleasure of visiting Victory Bike Studio and its sister, Pedaltown, last week. They are both awesome! I first noticed Victory because it was one of the first new business to open in the Broad Street Arts District. I wasn’t sure if I had room in the budget for a top-of-the-line bike though, so for a long while I was hesitant to stop in. Then I bought a used bike from a friend and took it to Victory to get fitted. Wow, so glad I did! Clark and his team were so nice and helpful – and the shop was so well-merchandised – that I left with both a fitted bike and new biking shorts, and could not wait to go for a ride! Between Victory and Pedaltown, bikers of any experience level can now find what they need. Visit Victory if you are looking to upgrade or searching for something you can’t get elsewhere in Memphis. If you are looking for something cool and custom on a tighter budget, visit Pedaltown, where they have everything from kids bikes to cruisers and everything in between – and they even have a cool app that measures you and generates the perfect bike for your unique make and build! Victory also offers morning spin classes and organized rides. I am a fan!

I honestly cant speak highly enough of Victory! Clark and his team have been more than accommodating and helpful, displaying impeccable customer service each and every time I have called with questions or come into the studio. Just recently, I approached them about donating their time to check over the bikes of a group of cyclists that were biking across the country with a nonprofit organization that is near and dear to my heart. Without hesitation and less than four days of notice, Clark agreed to send a mechanic over to where the cyclists were staying. Mason did an incredible job tuning up the bikes and even teaching some of the riders different tips to help them as they continued their trek. A few days later I went into the store for a follow-up fit and was treated with the most respect and patience as Sean explained different options and reasons for the fit. Between their incomparable customer service, commitment to the community and overall unrivaled bike knowledge, Victory is my go-to shop. If I could give Victory more than five stars, I would do it without a doubt. I will always recommend cycling friends to Victory!

I’m an ex-runner (60+ year old knees screamed at me to try biking). I bought a “good” road bike from another shop last year that was located close to my work, and then I proceeded to ride three days per week as long and as hard as I could comfortably go. I developed body and muscle aches that were not related to my physical conditioning. With some research I realized that I needed a professional bike fitting. I took my road bike to Victory for a fitting and the results were amazing. As I learned, there is fit and then there is fitness ... after my bike was professionally “fit” to me, my “fitness” was my only limitation. I picked up a used straight-bar bike a few weeks ago to ride during winter months … and of course my back, knees, hands (and a few places in between) started to ache. This time I decided to immediately go in for a fitting at Victory. Burke performed his “fitting” magic and basically transformed my bike into a custom (fit) piece of equipment for me. I would recommend that anyone interested in improving their bike riding experience let Victory perform a fit for you.
