IMPORTANT NOTE: If you have to give up your animal (and lets hope no one has to because a pet really is a responsibility for life), please find a rescue organization or family/friend to take your pet. Too many animals wind up in these facilities and a large majority of them a euthanized due to lack of space. Sometimes situations are outside of your control and you have no options, just please take the time to find a no-kill shelter or rescue group who will ensure your animal is not killed and finds a good forever home. FOR VOLUNTEERS/PEOPLE WHO WANT TO DONATE: This facility takes in thousands of animals of all kinds (mostly dogs and cats, but Ive seen chickens, roosters, bunnies, squirrels, chipmunks in there) and has served Chicago for 80 years. They even have a monthly food pantry to give dog/cat food to people who cant afford it (so they can keep their beloved pets versus having to give them up to AWL because they cant afford food). The people that work there love these animals and try to get as many fostered out through local animal rescues as they can. But sadly, the need is too great and the resources are too few. Please consider donating to them by dropping off clean towels, clean blankets, clean cat or dog beds, unopened dog or cat food, dog toys (Kongs and peanut butter is great and helps calm the dogs in their cages!), cat toys (no catnip!), Dawn dish soap, paper towels, newspapers, hand sanitizer, brooms and mops or a check would be greatly appreciated, too! Thank you! Im giving 3 stars because of the loving people who care for the hundred+ animals there at a given time, but I would give the facility itself 0 stars. Its very old and falling apart, despite their best efforts to keep it afloat. They need all of the help they can to help serve the animals who wind up here and who hopefully get rescued by the rescues who go there to find dogs.

After reading so many negative reviews, I almost did not go there with my service dog. THAT would have been a big mistake. The clinic was clean and the employees very friendly. They were genuinely concerned about my dog and her needs. The dog owners waiting with us were also friendly and nice to be around. Everyone kept their dogs under good behavior. Yes we had to wait but when we go to human doctors who gwta in right away? NOT ME, and probably not you. My girl got her needed meds and I got peace of mind. NOW for the adoption. My niece and I wanted to get her a dog that she could hold onher lap. We found a one eyed Shihtzu that needed and gave love both. He is so sweet and we both fell in love with him. The staff was courteous and caring, and though very busy, they took care of us and made sure we were helped. The volunteers constantly clean up after messes and always friendly in spite of being busy. If you dont like dogs in cages, then rescue one and give it a good home. I highly recommend you going to the AWL to get your new best friend. WE DID!!!!!

I hate this place! They killed an innocent dog! I knew the dog, & he was a friendly & nice; he love kids. I try to adopted him after the owner let him go, & they told me that he was going to be put to sleep because he had bad reputation. Poor baby! Probably he was really scared to be there & didnt understand why he was there. I just felt so heart broken because I knew he was a good dog, & I couldnt safe him, he did deseve a second chance & I know he was NOT going to harm no one!

Even though this facility is old it is also the only one n this area where low income people can afford to get their pets fixed n get their shots at a very reasonable price. Its easy to get to because I am one of the people in this area who brings pets in for shots n other things I always reccomend it to my friends. When I find a stray I also bring them here because people can be very cruel to unwanted pets and animals. I rather have this place in the community than none at all!!

The staff is nice, the place is nasty! I feel horrible for the dogs that have to go there. You give your pet to this place you never needed a pet to begin with. Our dog escaped the house and we searched here for him. Thank god he wasnt there. But the staff was nice about helping us.

Please support this facility, they are not run by the city of Chicago. They survive from private donations and every little bit helps...
