Wegmans is its own special wonderland. Being a newcomer to this family owned chain is a delight and adventure. Seriously. I avoided the first two weeks when the store opened, correctly figuring that Id be overwhelmed with anything more than the store and employees in their own. Finally, around 10:00 pm one eve, I needed some groceries and Wegmans is open from 6:00 am to midnight every day! (thank you!) I walked out of the store just before midnight, with bags full of delights and a complete sense of bewilderment and joy. Mind you, when I get home, I realize I completely missed the produce section and about half of the isles that first trip. They do have store maps. And Im not usually one to download specific store apps to my phone, but this one is a MUST. You can create shopping lists and it will let you know if the product is currently available in inventory, along with where it is in the store. Which is awesome. You can also add notes on items and access your purchase details to remember the things you might want to buy again, or not (that didnt seem totally likely but theres always something). You also get digital coupons on the app that automatically apply to your checkout when you scan your card which is nice. Plus they send you ones through postal mail if you wish and you get a free full size bottle of their garlic and herb basting oil which is really good! I have been back two other evenings so far and the produce section is great, and Im still working my way through all the isles. 65,000 products is a lot to process. I do need to make a point of going when the hot food bars are open though. Every bit of prepared food Ive tried has been delicious. Ive been in Charlottesville for a long time and typically my grocery trips involve driving over to 29 to make the rounds at Costco, Trader Joes, Kroger, and Whole Foods. Having lived on the east side of town, Food Lion and giant have been the only options and neither has ever done much in the East of standing out. There are all definitely a few items from each of those respective stores I will continue to get, but between the selection, the quality the prices, and the location... I dont think you can beat Wegmans. The cheeses, the wines, the meat department, the dessert case... Everything really. Omgoodness! Its truly a wonderful shopping experience.

Wegmans opened last weekend, but so far theyre off to a great start. Their opening (while packed) went smoothly. All of their staff that Ive interacted with has been very friendly and knowledgable about their area of expertise (cheese, produce, butcher, etc). The store is huge. Theres a massive prepared food section on the right when you enter and a restaurant. On the left theres an amazing beer, cider and wine section. They also have a fantastic bulk food section. They obviously have all of the regular grocery staples as well being a grocery store. My biggest issue so far is that while they have a wide variety of products theyre missing some key offerings within brands that they do stock. Im planning on submitting a request for a few things so Ill update this when I find out if thats something theyll entertain. A week in, Ive been there three times (I live nearby). The store is always spotless, and everything is always stocked which is impressive considering the foot traffic theyre getting. Im really excited for this store to become a little less swamped in a few months when its no longer a tourist destination.

Asked my 26 year old son to pick up beer and paper towels on the way home. The 24 year old "asset manager" (alcohol enforcer) denied him because he was accompanied by his 16 year old brother. The assumption was that the 26 year old was buying craft beer for the 16 year old brother. The store policy according to the 24 year old "enforcer" was "everyone in the party must have ID." I called the manager; he confirmed the policy. A different manager explained that they make exceptions to that for family members. When I pointed out their inconsistencies...they went right into, "Wegmans has the right to refuse any sale of alcohol." Okay. I promise you, Wegmans, if a 26 year old is coming in to purchase beer for a minor, hes not going to bring the minor along with him. Figure out your alcohol policy, train your employees on it, and hire someone older than 24, who is trained in customer service, and whos not on some power trip, to enforce your alcohol policy. Back to Kroger and Harris Teeter.

When Wegmans came to the Charlottesville area, I honestly couldnt have been more excited. Ive been shopping at Wegmans for quite some time (Upstate New York and Maryland). When I moved to Charlottesville, it was the one thing I was truly sad to give up. Not anymore! I attended the grand opening when they came to Charlottesville and have been shopping at Wegmans ever since. The employees are always such a pleasure, they have everything I need when it comes to groceries, and its a clean place to shop! Their store brand items are made with generally healthy ingredients, which isnt the case for many grocery stores (except, perhaps, Whole Foods). In addition, the prices at Wegmans are great! They even mail out coupons, which is really nice. Oh, and their food buffet: Its wonderful and they have just about everything! Its especially nice and fresh if you get there around 11AM or so (the start of lunch)! Seriously, whats not to love about Wegmans?

Dont go hungry. A staggering amount of ready-to-eat entrees, and salads, pizza, candy, and baked goods. Wow. A quick glance at the ingredients list on a package of prepared food revealed a disappointing list of preservatives. I avoid prepared food anyway because its a sure way to rack up a huge grocery bill. Curious about the Wegmans brand, I got potato chips (great) and canned pumpkin to use later in a pie, so cant comment on that yet. Wegmans yogurt was .39 a cup. An easy to navigate cheese selection, more than adequate tea selection, good looking produce, and a meat and fish lovers paradise. A little too gargantuan for my needs though, and too many temptations. Can understand the appeal for those with no time or inclination to cook.

Waited a few days to let the craziness die down and visited today. I have to say, the store is beautiful and boasts as much selection as they have a reputation for. My excitement over having such a close shopping option is still present but in the end, I should have waited a bit longer. The crowds were almost overwhelming (although friendly) and by the time I got to check out, the cashier was not very friendly and seemed overwhelmed herself. She also never asked if I had a Shoppers Club card, which I did ( and could have saved myself a few dollars) but was too rushed to even think about given the frenetic pace of things there. In summation, I will be back but I hope the service will stay consistent with the brand.

I lived in New Jersey, where Wegmans is a local phenomenon. Great hot food bars, stations for all of your food desires like sushi and pizza, and continuously superlative services. Coke freestyle in house. Great spaces for eating and browsing. Excited to have a Wegmans nearby again, and thanks to Wegmans for expanding to this fantastic area. Edit: After ordering their Thanksgiving meal for 5-6 people, as I used to in NJ, Im reminded of the ease, quality, and value the meal brought to our table. Pickup was easy and kind, and the food was easy to heat, in about an hour. Id recommend it for anyone. Check out my photos for the process and results, and thanks again, Wegmans.
