I am an auctioneer. Im used to the "no haggle"concept. Either my buyers want what Im selling and bid, or they dont. Buying at auction is really hassle free. Well, I waited 11 years and 207,000 miles to buy a new car because I absolutely dreaded the thought of having to play the negotiating game with a car salesman. All I could think of was "I dont have the time or the patience to go buy a new car". The thought was daunting. Then, my daughter and her husband went to buy a new car and they went to CarMax. They talked about the hassle free aspect of their experience, so I thought hmm...maybe Ill get online and look at the inventory. Well, I did. My auction practices have changed over the course of 20+ years. Now, I sell primarily online. I dont get to bid call much anymore, but Ive had to reconcile with the fact that people really like to bid and buy online. So, I thought "Maybe buying a car doesnt have to be what I remember from twelve years ago either." I shopped the CarMax nationwide inventory and used their website to create my own inventory of vehicles. Finally, I set up a test drive for a Saturday morning at the Rivergate location. Before I headed down to CarMax, I got a call from Patrick, a salesman from Rivergate. He was so nice and said the car would be ready for me. When I arrived, Patrick was busy so Marianne helped me and we took the car for a drive. Well, that car wasnt for me, so we sat at her computer and found a car that was for me...a 2015 Toyota 4 Runner. The car was in South Carolina, so I had to pay a transfer fee to get it to the Rivergate location. At first I was a little upset about having to pay a transfer fee, but then I thought I probably saved time and money by not going from dealership to dealership in search of my perfect car. I found it online and it was being brought to me. The car arrived in about 10 days. Patrick called and said to come on down. When I arrived, the car was waiting and Patrick very patiently explained everything I needed to know about the car. Then we took it out for a drive. Since I was trading a 2005 Toyota 4 Runner for a 2015 Toyota 4 Runner, I felt pretty confident about the vehicles performance and decided I wanted to complete the deal. They had already given me a suitable appraisal on my car, so it was merely a matter of paperwork. As Patrick passed me a paper-towel, I tearfully said good-by to my old car. He took me inside and we finalized the paperwork. When I came out, my new car was waiting with a big yellow bow. It made me smile. The people I had the pleasure to work with were very kind and professional. At no time did I ever feel pressured. It was ssssooooo easy and stress free. What a great car buying concept! Who knows, maybe I wont wait so long next time to get a new car.

Im posting this from an experience i had a few years ago. I dont know how carmax is on the buying side of things . On the side of selling your vehicle to them , Dont wast your time . Years ago i had a 2004 Lincoln LSE with around 80k miles . The blue book on it was at 13k at the time . I spoke with someone over the phone to see if i can get a rough estimate on how much they would likely offer me but he kept insisting that id have to come in. I lived about an hour and a half away . So i drove up there one day and sat with the rep for a little while and they looked at my car . About an hr later he comes out with an offer of around 5k . I was offended. I know i cant expect what id like but that offer was so low it made me laugh . Meanwhile on their website they had Lincolns like mine for 14 to 16k with around the same miles as mine . What made it even worse was mine was an LSE with a rare sports package for that year , theirs were base LS models . I went outside to pick my car up and as i sat in it and turned the engine over i hear a grind and the engine starts to shake and sputter and then dies on me !!! Sounds like something out of a horror movie . This is right after they test drove it !! I was so pissed i walked in and asked the rep to bring the guys that drove my car outside . I waited 20 min for them as the rep told me they were busy . I understand. No rush for a guy that didnt take your offer right ? Then some guy comes out all smiling and asked me if something was wrong . I said let me show you something . I walked to my car and it started fine , Which actually pissed me off again .So i got out the car and asked him what all he did to my car and he said " we just inspected it and drove it down the street " with that stupid smile on his face. He then said "have a good day" and stood out there smiling like a clown while i drove off. I have never been more pissed off then that day. I wish i still knew all their names so i can list them . But theres one name i know i cant and wouldnt trust , carmax. These guys are horrible low ball crooks that will offer you nothing and destroy your car in the process. I tell everyone to avoid them all the time .

What I love about CarMax: I can go to one store and test drive different makes and models. This makes it extremely easy to do side by side comparisons when choosing the best vehicle. The website is very easy to use and once you narrow down the exact vehicle you are looking to purchase, you can search all stores to find the perfect car. Although, I wish there was some room for haggling, I have found their pricing competitive. I absolutely love there are no documentation, processing, or administrative fees. It is simply the cost of the vehicle plus state and local taxes. I have found over the years the sales staff to be very helpful and not pushy. I typically take 3-6 months to purchase a vehicle. I really appreciate the willingness to show me a variety of vehicles and not pressure me to buy something quickly. I also like you can see the vehicles history online for free which saves you quite a bit of money if you look at 50 cars before buying like I did. I had planned to buy from an individual but when it was all said and done, the CarMax experience was the best way for me to go. I was able to get rid of my literally dying vehicle no problem, transferred the perfect car me, and process the deal in under an hour. I did not realize when you transfer a vehicle, they remove it from any online inventory searches. This allowed me a week where the car was mine unless I decided otherwise allowing me time to finalize my decision making process. Jeff Loth was a pleasure to work with and I would definitely buy from them again. I felt the CarMax experience while staying in business making a profit did not compromise customer service, or skimp on delivering a quality product. I found the experience very positive and got exactly what I was looking for in a car. I transferred a one owner, low mileage, late model vehicle in to the Rivergate store. I recommend CarMax without hesitation.
