Although the staff are nice enough be warned about getting small pets or any pets for that matter from the Petland. The staff are all young and inexperienced with animal care let alone the specifics on how the animals should be handled and fed/housed. I went in looking for toe nail caps for my cat. They didnt have any, so I decided to look at the small animals having rats myself. I saw that they had a whole 3x3 glass cage full of rats. They informed me as I was picking them up and looking at the boys that "there is a pregnant one in there too". I immediately said why are there females and males housed together with no reply. Not only that but there was no open food to eat, poop and an evident smell of urine everywhere in the cage, and at east 30 rats in a tightly packed space. Half of them sounded sickly while the other half looked to young to be weaned. I wanted to save one so I let them "talk" me in to buying a guinea pig cage for half price if I took a rat (because they keep letting them breed together and then let them get sick). Knowing how to take care of these small creatures, I knew the cage was worthless but it was worth it to save at least one baby from this place. Now it is Monday (I got Shy Guy on Thursday) and he is very sick after being housed alone and in a different room from my other babies. He is breathing with sounds like a pigeon which indicates severe upper respiratory infection or even pneumonia. This place is ridiculous. Please stay away if you want ill informed people giving you sick animals. Corporate has been called about this and now that Shy Guy is ill, will be notified again in the morning. STAY AWAY FROM PETLAND ATHENS FOR SMALL ANIMALS!!!!!

I wish I could give them negative stars. I have adopted two dogs from animal shelter over the past twelve years and they are like my babies. I went into the store to buy new toys for them and absolutely fell in love with one of the maltese puppies there. Within two days of purchase she went to two different emergency vets. Firstly, the vet petland makes you take the animals to so that your "warranty" is valid is a freaking joke!! He did not catch that my dog had pneumonia or kennel cough. Then when they helped me take her to an emergency vet that same night he saw her for 10 minutes and sent us home said she would be fine as long as we gave her some Karo to get some sugar in her (she was not eating a lot for me and at this point I had only had her for 24 hours). The very next day I took her to medvet in columbus because she had a seizure and was literally almost dead. I had had this puppy for two days, fed her and had her drink as much as I possibly could and she was still in awful condition. She ended up staying in the hospital for a week and I had a $2400 hospital bill!! The vets at medvet told me that she would not have lived if I had not bought her because petland took such awful care of her. On top of all of this, when I called the store to inform them of everything that had happened with my brand new puppy, the manager tried to act like all of this was my fault somehow and that I was a bad pet owner. Needless to say I gave the lady an earful and hung up. I will never again support the petland organization in any way and every chance I get I dissuade others from so as well.

Bought my dog from here 6 years ago. While I love my dog to death... He has a lot of skin allergies and health issues. Also, Petland said he was a Pomeranian mix and when we took him to our vet back in the Toledo OH area they said he was a havanese. After much research he is definitely a havanese but these dogs are quite rare and usually you cannot find them in pet stores, as they are quite rare in the US and require extra paperwork upon adoption. His "chip" they said was implanted in him was not found when we took him to our local vet in Toledo. As he got older, his muscles actually grew around the chip making it unreadable. We made sure that Petland gave us our money back(this took quite the amount of extra effort and we had to fax them multiple X-rays showing this chip was not there). I also bought a cat from here while at school at OU. I would never reccomend any of my friends to get an animal from here EVER. All my friends say "dont shop adopt!" And I thank god I found my Bentley here cause I saved him from this horrible place.

McKay, if youre so passionate about animal welfare why would you leave a "good" review for a business that helps keep puppy mills going, a business that apparently puts the health of their animals behind profit? Are you somehow unaware of what a puppy mill is? Aside from that, a dog is not a baby. Under the laws of this country animals are property and Petland is in the business of selling that property, for which they offer a warranty that apparently they do not honor. This business falls short on both being ethical and offering a good product and standing behind the promises they make. I was going to take my property to Petland and buy him something nice, but we will be going elsewhere...assuming he decides to get out of bed...

We bought a newfoundland pup from here. Worst mistake ever. They told us he was top of the line in his breed etc. We had him for 2 months he got cherry eye which some say its hereditary some dont. They told us when we got him that any thing that happened to him within the 1st year would be on them. Yea sounds great right. Wrong they paid for one surgery and I had to fight them to pay for it now him being 7 months old needing another surgery on his eyes they refuse to pay for it. We paid ALOT of money for him. At least they could do is follow thru with there one year warranty. Ive never been so disappointed in my life!

The cages where dirty. The rats where non handled. Looked and peted the rats found a little girl that was about to have a littler and had to tell them she was. I had picked a rat i loved out but thought maybe he was sick. I asked them they said he was fine. He was a little on the skinny side. I got him home and he was peeing blood. Called the vet he was going to help me. Called them and they didnt know what to do. My rat died in the night i had him for 12 hours and he died They are young and do not know what they are doing or what they are saying. They know nothing that is helpful.

This place is a joke, yes of course its an animal mill. And the workers are paid by commission. They also harass you to try and get you to buy an animal, any animal they really dont care. I went there to buy dog food and I had one of the workers following me around the whole store the whole time trying to get me to look at puppies and buy one. I repeatedly told him no and I wasnt interested but these people dont understand what no means. Be smart and adopt your animals at the local shelter and dont contribute to this business making money in the animal trade.- Nick.O on yelp
