As far as the cupcakes themselves, I am a fan of Sugarland. Their mimosa cupcakes are my favorite! As a caterer, however, I would not hire them. When I asked about wedding cake tastings back in January, I was told to leave my contact information and that Id receive an email sometime soon with information about the next group tasting. A month passed and I had not yet received an email, so I gave them the benefit of the doubt and left my email address a second time in February. Then in March, I happened upon a cake tasting event on Facebook hosted by Sugarland, even though I still hadnt received an email. When I contacted them about this, I received an email from their catering coordinator explaining that she had a note saying she did send me an email on January 27, indicating that she probably just copied my information down wrong. However, the fact that I left my contact information a second time roughly three weeks after that should have given her a clue that I never received that email. No matter. Now that they have my correct contact information, I should receive an invitation to the next event, right? Wrong. It has been three months since I contacted the catering coordinator, and I STILL have not heard anything about cake tastings from Sugarland. Since wedding season is in full swing, I am assuming that they have not gone three months since their last tasting. I did my best to have their cake at my wedding, since I am a long-time fan, but they have done little (if anything) to secure my business. I am giving them two stars only because the cupcakes themselves are decent, even if the service is not.

I got the chocolate hazelnut cupcake and it was pretty dry and the flavor just wasnt there. I tried my husbands peanut butter cup cupcake and it was slightly more moist, ok flavor. They have a sign on their register stating that you must spend a min of $5 in order to use a credit/debit card, which is completely ridiculous since thats actually illegal for businesses to require. Even if it were legal, its still unacceptable to inconvenience your customers so you can save on the transaction processing fee, which is a whole $1.00 or so for CC and all of $0.05 for debit card transactions. The ambiance was weird and uncomfortable because it was completely silent, except for the random conversations from the other patrons. I felt like I couldnt freely speak with my husband, unless I whispered, without everyone in there hearing exactly what we were saying. This is the first time Ive ever went to a bakery that is supposed to specialize in cupcakes and I was totally disappointed. All in all - Expensive, dry, lacking flavor, weird atmosphere, and I guess bring cash if you only want 1 item. We will not be back.

When I placed my order for the 10" cake for a birthday celebration at the office, I requested that they write "Happy Birthday" on the cake with the names of the two individuals whose birthday it was. All the bakeries Ive used in the past have included additional icing decorations that are typically expected on a birthday cake from a bakery. Sugarland should have explained that the only decoration that would be on the cake would be skinny, skimpy icing piped on for the wording -- and that additional decorations could be added for an additional cost. I would have paid more to make the cake look festive, had I been informed. Instead we celebrated with a very plain looking cake that wasnt up to par because the layers were so dry. If Sugarland wants to charge a premium price ($80+ dollars for that "plain Jane" not very impressive cake), customers should be able to expect premium service and premium taste. I wont be ordering another cake from Sugarland.

Such a cute little cupcake shop & they also sell gelato & wine. I went on a Thursday and they were offering buy a glass of wine and get a cupcake for free. Of course I had to partake. I had the Cupcake brand wine in red velvet. It was good but not as sweet as I prefer my wines. That is just a personal preference. The glass was what I call an "at home pour" size. You know the at home pour aka filled to the top. For the cupcake I opted for the Peanut butter blast cupcake. I love peanut butter and chocolate and it had some sort of PB filling in the middle. The icing was delicious. However, the cake itself disappointed. It was on the dry side and just not very good. Ive had better for sure. Im glad I was able to visit this shop while in Raleigh. It is a very cute shop to sit, hang out, and catch up with friends over wine or without. :-)

Sugarland hit a homerun with their pig-themed cake for our backyard bbq / birthday party. I knew I wanted a cake, but at the same time recognized that banana pudding was the traditional dessert to accompany Eastern NC barbecue. Melissa had never done something like that before, but was more than willing to work with us to come up with something. Her cake was outstanding - and it spot-on recreated the flavors of banana pudding in the form of a cake, right down to her use of fresh bananas in the filling between layers. Her pig silhouette for the cut cake was really cute, and fondant work was good. She even went the extra step of decorating the cake board to look like a checkered tablecloth, just like my favorite barbecue joints have. I wont hesitate to work with Sugarland in the future.

Came in for a cake tasting because we were possibly going to use them as a cake vendor for our wedding. We scheduled an appointment, they were ready for us, and were very professional. Explained everything in detail and answered all our questions after the tasting. They seemed to be pretty accommodating. It was clean and seemed to be well maintained. The cake it self just wasnt very good. I mean, there wasnt much cake. I understand why its called Sugarland. There was equal parts frosting as cake. If youre a frosting freak youd love it, but the 3, 1/2 inch thick layers of frosting on all the pieces we had was overkill. The cake itself was pretty good. Wonder what it wouldve been like with a reasonable amount of frosting.

Ive always loved Sugarland. In terms of their cupcakes and gelato, 5 stars all around. Recently though, my fiance and I went their in search of a wedding cake. Sugarland was very helpful and offered a complimentary tasting at either store of our choosing, which was very convenient for us. We had no reservations about the quality of their cakes - just look in their store and youll be blown away. Pricing though, we thought would be a different story. It turns out, theyre very reasonable, and very competitive if not cheaper than a lot of other more well-known bakeries in the area. From the casual cupcake to the elaborate wedding cake, we love Sugarland!

This place boasts long hours compared to most Cameron Village eateries. The cleanliness is acceptable but theres nothing special about the interior decor. This shop primarily has cupcakes and gelato. My biggest irk is that putting some blueberries atop a cheesecake does not a blueberry cheesecake make. I will say that the cheesecake is delicious though. Its hard to love this place if youve been to Sugarland on Franklin Street in Chapel Hill, which has a much larger variety of desserts, tarts, cakes, and alcoholic drinks--but I suppose Sugarland here didnt want to compete with Bittersweets market in downtown Raleigh.
