I bought a betta fish for my boyfriend. They are easy to care for and dont require a filter. Theyre great for kids, but even my boyfriend, who is an adult, wasnt able to keep this fish alive. It died within two weeks. It wouldnt eat anything and starved itself to death. The helpers there gave him large sinking pellets for his fish, which expanded in the water; whereas I received small floating pellets from petsmart, and my betta fish is 6 months old and healthy. We got him another betta from petsmart and it refused the sinking pellets, so we got floating ones from petsmart as well and it ate them right away. At the end of May we went back to house of pets for round 2 and got 2 golden geckos. The lady who helped us seemed to be knowledgeable, but once we got the golden geckos home, they hid for 10 days and did not eat. During the 10 days he tried simple things to help them get used to the environment, but nothing changed. When we went back to house of pets to ask about the issue, the lady told us the 85 degrees hed kept the enclosure at wasnt warm enough. So we changed it to 90 as she suggested and nothing changed. We ended up doing loads of research and fixed the problems on our own. Within a week of getting his geckos, I purchased a veiled chameleon, which Ive been researching for a long while. The girl who had gotten my boyfriends geckos put them in bags and said they were healthy looking ones. She did the same with mine, not allowing me to see her first. She told me she was big and healthy and then proceeded to have be sign this paper saying they arent responsible for the death of reptiles for they are precious cargo. She actually had sunken eyes, was frail, and her legs were bowed, which is a sign of MBD. She lived exactly two weeks. I attempted to reverse her signs of MBD by giving her calcium on her meals, and being sure to give her the even 12 hours of uvb lighting. In the last three days of her life, she was turning black, her back legs were paralyzed, she didnt eat or drink, and she passed away. House of pets is a very cool place to take your kids to, but the people there are not knowledgeable enough to be selling certain exotic pets.

We went there because on the phone they told us they had sugar gliders available. The only other place around us that also had sugar gliders was 20 minutes north of Detroit. We drive the 35 minutes from Monroe to Garden City to get to House of Pets and ask to see the sugar gliders. We were "helped" by a short, blonde girl. The first question we were asked was "Well, are you going to buy the sugar gliders?" We said we were interested in them, and wanted to interact with them and ask some questions to get a feel for how they act and what to expect. The lady rudely said "Well, we cant let you interact with them. Even if you were to buy them. Theyre nocturnal. We can show you the animal though." I can see just fine, thanks. How am I supposed to know what a pet is like without interacting with them? Two days before this, we had gone to a pet shop in Grosse Pointe(Lous Pet Shop, definitely recommended!) and they let us take their sugar gliders out of their cages at 3PM and play with them all we wanted. Even though theyre nocturnal. The shop itself was very unkempt and looks like it was recently flooded. Never going there again.

They injured my new pet in the process of grooming her and did not have the guts to even tell me that she was hurt. just had me pay and i get home and there is blood the lady acted as if the blood was only from her getting bit but she lied she new what she had did and ddidnt want to own up to her mistake. now im the one stuck with a vet bill and medical bill for their mistake. i would never shop there again and i advise you to save your time because they can careless for any animal only their money in their pocket because if they did they would own up to a mistake they did instead of blaming it on another animal. the animal was in there care and she got hurt and may never be the same shameful that this shop is even still open because it is not kept up well it stinks 24/7.

Received two very sick snakes. The first one we assumed was maybe a fluke, house of pets did replace the original. Neither snake survived a month neither would eat both had scale rot and lesions both were unable to shed properly despite exact humidity and hot and cold temperatures the tank set up is to the t, thermometers, heaters, hides, misters, multiple water dishes not to mention being an experienced snake handler please do not purchase reptiles or anything else here unless you want to bury it in a month the employees are absolutely clueless i asked basic questions (that i already knew the answers to) and they had the most ridiculous and unintelligent responses do your self a favor go adopt somewhere else nothing in that store is healthy or properly maintained.

After my Rose Hair had a bad molt, I went in to talk to Amber, who was very helpful and compassionate, we looked through multiple sources together, none of which giving any hope. My spider would have had to lose 4 legs (one was already lost during the molt, 2 were curled and one was at a horrible angle backwards over her body), which gives them almost 0 chance of survival. We both agreed the best thing for her was to put her out of her misery (yes tarantulas feel pain). I asked her if she would do it for me and she said yes. She was as helpful as she could be, she knew I wasnt going to buy anything that day, yet she agreed to euthanize my pet for me, and didnt once try to push a sale on me taking into account my depressed state

Worst pet store ever. Amber is rude and thinks that she can overtalk you to sound educated. Literally got yelled at because the fish I just bought went belly up within 45mins of putting them in our already established tank. Person took fish out of net with her hand and threw it into the bag. We asked in the store is it ok and she said oh itll be fine. We call and ask the fish policy and the person on the phone says oh you got a 50/50 chance with our fish - But real answer is the policy is 24 hours and they check the water. I UNDERSTAND COMPLETELY THAT I WILL NEVER COME BACK TO THIS STORE. I hope that this is an educational moment for your staff to educate themselves with your store policy and how to handle fish properly.

Horrible conditions for their tarantulas. Obviously they had no water for days as the dry (coconut fiber) bedding that had been pushed into the dishes. Some tanks did not even have enough bedding to cover the bottom of the tank. When alerted to the lack of water at the close of the day, the employee said he would get to them sometime the next day. There were no crickets (alive, or dead) in any of the tanks. Owner was very rude and wanted us to pay for the tarantulas we wanted and drove hours to purchase and then return for them the next day, instead of spending a few minutes to serve us that day.
