I had my lasik surgery done on November 22, 2013 at 11am. There are a few things I’d like to get out of the way first. The first is that I really do not suggest getting the tear plugs. I didn’t know they were optional and they were put on my papers. They cost $400 and are NOT worth it. They say you feel slight pressure during insertion, but it was more than slight. Not only would I not do it again cause of the discomfort, but they ended up falling out within a couple of hours after the surgery, when they are meant to stay in for weeks. Also, because I couldn’t touch my eyes, they caused me pain all day. Next, I’m going to let you know that you WILL lose your sight during the procedure. Don’t freak out. It’s normal and will last only a few seconds. I don’t know why, but they don’t tell you this. Lastly about the eye drops that they prescribe. Call around as soon as you get the prescription. They told me they will cost around $20-$60. I called 9 pharmacies and the best I could find was $130 for the first one and $50 for the second one. The second one, I ended up only getting half a bottle for $22. So my total was around $150. The pharmacist says if I’m careful with my drops, I will not need the second half of the bottle. Ok, now I want to talk about the procedure itself, so if you want to stay in la la land that it is not painful and you can relax during the procedure, please do not read on. I know if they told me how the procedure really felt, I’m not sure that I would have had the courage to go through with it. I don’t know exactly what they do (I will have to look that up later), but the beginning part of each eye hurt so badly. First, I’m going to suggest that you make sure that you get a FULL drop of the numbing medicine on each eye. I blinked, so I only got about half to ¾’s of a drop on one eye. So I felt a little more on one eye. Prepping the eye is the worst part, along with when they say suction cup is on. The cutting of the flap just feels weird. The laser was one of the more comfortable parts, along with them painting the eye, when done. All in all, it was so uncomfortable, that I did not know if I had the strength to do the other eye. I definitely wanted it over with, so I sucked it up. I was prepared for the same pain, but unfortunately the left eye was much worse. After it all was finished, my body was in such distress that I thought I was going to black out. I found the strength to stand up and walk out of the room and met my husband. He told me how everyone that came out talked about how much more painful the left eye was compared to the right. So I don’t know if it was the tools, staff or maybe just in our heads. Who knows? I just know that we all felt the left eye was significantly more painful. All in all, yes it was painful, but yes it was worth it. The first day was torture, but I believe this to be mainly because of the tear plugs. The next day was a bit dry, but ok. Today is my third day and I’m doing well. I have a slight foggy look on one eye, but other than that, all is well. They tested me the next day and I tested better than 20/20. So I’m very happy with the results. The only complaint is the tear plugs, which I will be contacting them about later. When looking at my eyes, you can’t even tell I had lasik done. I do suggest this to anyone that is tired of their glasses or contacts. I got the lifetime plan, so that all future procedures needed will be free. Although, I can definitely tell you that I will not be looking forward to them. If you do get the lifetime plan, know that you will need to have an eye exam every year and need to submit the results to them. Each exam will need to include an eye dilation test. Just as a final note, I would like to say that my pain tolerance is low, so it might have been more painful for me, than it will be for you, but I know I am not alone in my experience. Still worth it and I wish you the best on your lasik procedure. Please don’t let me scare you away, the temporary pain is worth it.
