A service call about our washer resulted in a $90 charge and no service provided. We have a Bosch clothes washer that stopped working suddenly while we were out of town. It still had power, but no buttons worked, no lights lit up except the "on" light, nothing else. The repairman arrived, looked at the front of the washer and basically said "yup, it looks broken". He declared that he could tell that the internal circuit board had fried which could only be the result of the motor failing. As replacing both the motor and the board would cost $700, which wouldnt be worth it, that was all he could do. We asked whether he shouldnt take the cover off to actually LOOK at the circuit board and he insisted he could tell from looking at the front and there would be no point to taking it apart (we suspect he simply didnt want to deal with pulling out the stack unit, and getting the drier down off the top to get access to the screws necessary to open the washer). After taking the machine apart ourselves two days later, we discovered a mouse had crawled into the circuit board. Removing the mouse and cleaning the board fixed the problem. It took us about 15 minutes to diagnose and fix the problem that the repair guy didnt bother to even look at. We called Big 1 Appliance to complain about the interaction, saying that it seemed strange at the time that he didnt open the machine and that if he had, HE would have been able to fix the problem...which would have provided us some service for our $90. They stood their ground, insisting that the $90 fee was simply for showing up at the door. Since he didnt provide any additional service, we hadnt been charged for any actual repair. If he HAD opened the machine, we would have been charged additional (As though somehow that would have been a bigger problem than showing up, not doing anything, and charging us $90). I am now going out of my way to tell people what horrible service Big 1 provides. I cannot recommend against these people enough. Not only bad service, but a terrible price, lied about their service policies, and completely unwilling to offer us a reduced price or refund after they displayed absurd incompetence.

1.0 star rating 1/27/2014 What a bad experience we have had after years of loyal patronage to this store and multiple purchases. Never again. We purchased a stove a couple of years ago with cast iron grates on the top. The little feet that keep the grate stable and from marring the porcelain kept either falling off or wearing out. so we contacted Big 1 so they could order new ones for us. Long story short, they first sent the wrong feet and then sent only 9 feet (there are 12) with some silicone and this cost $50. When my husband tried to follow up with them (and he is always very polite and respectful) again because we really need these feet he was told the following: "We cant be bothered with this minutiae." "Were not getting paid for this and we spent a lot of time." "Dont bother my people anymore." And the best one of all, "Go visit hospice and see people who have real problems." Really? I would say it is very unwise to insult your patrons, especially loyal ones. We are now going to tell everyone we know NOT to patronize Big 1 and fill them in on this story. We are also going to contact the Better Business Bureau, the Chamber of Commerce and all the other contacts we have in the many organizations we belong to. This includes five Rotary clubs, multiple realtors and their companies, Business & Professional Women of Nevada County, etc., etc. It is shocking that, in a small community like ours, a business feels free to give poor service and then insult their patrons, assuming there will be no repercussions. You can be sure this community will know all about it.

I try as much as I can to shop with local merchants, so when my dishwasher died, I came here to purchase a new one. First of all the salesperson lied to me, telling me what he thought I wanted to hear, rather than giving me accurate information. Yes, I know, he is a salesman, and I should have known better than to believe anything he said. Then after the dishwasher came and I was completely dissatisfied with the product and immediately wanted to send it back, I was informed that it was not returnable, and that I had to go through the manufacturer for any problems. I checked on the state of California website, and discovered that a merchant must inform potential buyers if a product is not returnable, and the store had not made that clear to me at the time of purchase. Still, they refused to let me return the product. I will never shop at this store again, and have told everyone who asks for recommendations to stay away from this shop. I know it is the only game in town, but for me a trip to Roseville or Sacramento to shop is a small price to pay to stay clear of this business.

I have used Big 1 for appliance repair twice in the last year or so, most recently this month. Both times I have been impressed with the caliber of the technician sent to my home and Dave (who I believe is the Service Manager) is also very courteous. In both instances I felt these repairmen behaved in a highly professional as well as friendly manner, and I also felt they each had a very customer-oriented focus in carrying out the repairs. First I had to have my washer repaired and that technician found a more budget-friendly work around solution to my problem and then I had to have my frig repaired. Both bills seemed fair to me and each time the work was accomplished in a single, efficient visit. Im also a bit of a fuss budget about my home and each were also very tidy and respectful of my residence and careful in their physical conduct while on the premises. I am VERY happy to recommend Big 1 and will call them exclusively for any future repair needs of mine.

They sell faulty junk appliances and do not back their products. They burned me on a dryer that was junk. Stopped after a year and they said they knew about the problem and the manufacturer was working on a fix. When I asked about when this fix would be allied to my dryer they told me it was only for the new dryers. I was stuck with the garbage they sold me. After 3 years and paying over the original price in repairs (to them, I admit I shouldnt have bothered with their shoddy repair service, my mistake there) I finally scraped the dryer as junk and went to a reputable company to buy a new one. I will tell everyone I know and come into contact with in my job with the public to stay away from that business. They give Grass Valley a bad reputation. They should not be in business.

My experience with Big 1 Appliance in Grass Valley was exceptional. In the showroom, Marc was helpful and available for questions, without being overbearing. I felt comfortable taking my time to consider and compare purchasing options. After my selections were made, the paperwork part of the transaction went quickly and smoothly. As promised, two days later my appliances were delivered on time. The installation crew - Rick, Brian and Nathan - were friendly and efficient, professional and careful. Successful installation was accomplished expeditiously, and everything works perfectly. I will definitely recommend this company to others in the future. Judie Koeckritz, Nevada City
