Excellent customer service and expertise are the hallmarks of Fontana. Their fly shop is the gold standard in the Madison area. I work at Cabelas but I do pick up some items here when the price is right. Craig is a wealth of knowledge and someone you must chat with to get the skinny on what flies to use and whats currently working on area streams, Eastern Wisconsin Steelhead waters, and smallmouth rivers. The lack of five stars is really only due to the one drawback that Fontana, like any other independent in the world of big box stores and online shopping, has. That is their pricing is often not competitive. Make sure you check out their tent sale in the spring to get some of the best deals.

I need a pair of Fischer Ski boots Vacuum fitted. Fontana is the only place in Madison that has the machine to fit my boots. I called them to see if they would price match a shop in Minneapolis. I was coming from La Crosse so it would save me about 15 min one way to get the fitting done at Fontanta. They would not match the price because the other shop is located in a different city. This is slightly annoying because it is pure revenue they are missing out on. Now I have to add 30 min on to my 4 hour drive (there and back) to get my foots fit. When I called everyone I talked to was very friendly however, they did not go above and beyond to help a potential customer.

I absolutely love Fontana and its helpful employees. I worked with Craig, specifically, from the Fly Fishing department in-store as well as on the phone and was extremely helpful and patient with myself and my family. My mom and dad are just getting into fly fishing and his knowledge and expertise on waders, rods, etc. really helped them better understand the ins-and-outs clearer than I was able to express to them. I have bought two coats on spring clearance here over the years, a few other items at full price, as well as ten Merino caps (I lose or wear out a stocking cap per year, on average). Ive never experienced anything but the best service imaginable from Fontanas extremely knowledgeable employees. I trust them to help me find an article of clothing thats right for me, and not hideous by my standards (its sport wear, lets be honest with ourselves).

Such a great experience going to Fontana and getting fantastic customer service, product selection, and prices. Also, no line like at REI. While Im an REI member, its like Starbucks for me: long line (always) and average coffee. If you truly love coffee, you go to a smaller, better cafe with no lines and people who are passionate about their product. Thats Fontana when you need outdoor equipment.
