Vince Powell of Powell Motors, Inc. and his family really treated us right! We paid a little bit more than wed hoped, but since we were looking for a unicorn of a vehicle (a-less-than-10-year-old Honda Element with perfect service records & a clean bill of health, bonus points for no cladding and a kick-ass color), we felt the price was fair. We had called ahead on the car and half expected it to be sold by the time wed be able to go see it. Vince called us to let us know it was still there the night before we were scheduled to come. From the minute we walked in, we were warmly greeted... not in that schmoozy fake "I see dollar signs on your forehead and need to make my quota" way... It was more like when you go to your first sleep-over at your best friends house and their parents make you feel like youre a welcome part of their miraculously-not-dysfunctional family. After close inspection, we took a nice long test drive. He offered to go with us, but let us go on our own. We had planned to get a mobile mechanic to come check it out for us, but they had already had an inspection and tune up done by the highly rated Same Day Auto Service of Clackamas, and shared the full records. So we felt we didnt need to get our own inspection done. When we came back and were still not sure, he held it for us while we took a walk and had a long lunch at the Burgerville (there were about a hundred little cheerleaders in front of us). It started pouring and he actually sent his son out to come see if he could find us to give us a ride back, though we missed him since we were already on our way. When Vince saw the super-worn key for our old Subaru, he let us know the info wed gotten originally that if it breaks we have to rekey was incorrect, and he set us up to get a new one cut based on the VIN number at the shop down the block. He let them know we wed be coming after we finished buying the car so that they would stay open for us in case we were a few minutes late, and he also offered to show me how to get there. He was able to take a card rather than just a check for our downpayment, and didnt charge any processing fees, which can be pretty high for major purchases. And he held the car for us for four days until we could get back to bring the credit union check. We had noticed a few minor condition issues - dinged paint on the door, a broken air vent, missing rubber bit on a seat, and broken vanity mirror), all of which they fixed for us. When we arrived to pick up the car there was a cute hand-lettered sign in the window. Everything was as agreed and then some. Since they are Carfax members we have the one year lemon/severe damage/odometer guarantee. Ill let you know how it holds up, but Im pretty sure I can safely say we had a great experience with good people, buying a vehicle Im pretty sure were going to love.

Let me start out by saying that I work in an industry where customer service is our top priority, so I am always a critic of service I receive when I frequent an establishment. I stopped in and test drove a car a few months before I had actually purchased, and dealt with Richard (who has since retired). He was very friendly, helpful and I enjoyed chatting with him while I took a vehicle for a no-pressure test drive. After explaining that we were waiting a little longer before purchasing to pay off the last of our debt, I left with no arguments or hassles. Two days later, I received a thank you note in the mail, thanking me for stopping by--a nice touch!! This definitely kept Powell Motors in the forefront of my mind as the time approached to purchase a vehicle. When my wife and I were finally ready to start seriously looking at purchasing, I visited their site again, only to see that the car was still available. I called and spoke with Vince, the owner, who was very helpful as well (and I had a great time chatting with him about cars in general that day!) I went down and purchased the car that day. When we agreed on a price, Vince immediately took the car down for an oil change, and they detailed the interior and exterior for me, even including a "Especially for..." sign in the window for when I arrived home to my wife and son. Israel was very attentive and personalized the experience, understanding that I knew cars well so we could speed up the process while still making sure I understood what he was doing at each step. The preparation each vehicle receives before it is marketed is incredible, and Vince and Israel go out of their way to make sure theyre selling a true quality used vehicle (always worth a few extra bucks!) and it shows in the vehicle information folders they create on each car. The whole process was painless. Even the young men detailing the cars were extremely attentive and showed genuine care. About a week later, I received a phone call that my plates had arrived, and that they would be happy to install them if I could swing by at my earliest convenience. I did so the next day, and Nick had them installed in a matter of minutes and I was on my way. I would most definitely consider returning to Powell in the future, and would recommend them to any of my family and friends. THANKS AGAIN GUYS!!

I first heard of Powell Motors in 2003. I dropped in on a whim and was welcomed by friendly, warm staff people. I immediately intuited that I could totally trust the sales person (Israel) and began exploring used car options. A month or so later I received a very low key follow-up call to let me know that the car I had been looking at had had its price dropped. I let Israel know that I had begun looking at new cars so thanks, so no thanks , take care, and so on. He promptly let me know that Powell Motors also brokers new cars. All I did, at that point, was go to a dealer, test drive a couple of cars, and then I told Israel what I wanted. The rest was magic. He emailed me prices, window stickers, colors, and so on. I made my choice, and then all I had to do was show up at Powell Motors to sign paperwork. No high pressure selling or haggling. Very simple. And the price was super competitive. Since then, I have purchased two used cars from them and just got my fourth new car though Israel. So I am a satisfied customer. I like that they close Sundays so their staff can rest. Vince heads the outfit and is always eager to ensure great customer service. If you notice something wrong with your recently purchased car, they will do their best to correct the problem. One reviewer below described them as pushy, rude and eating lunch while he waited. This would never happen at PM. Whether you are in the market for a used car or new car, Powell Motors is the place to go.

Quality and the Personal Touch at a Portland Institution - Powell Motors is that rare thing: a local, family-run business that still manages to offer competitive prices and superior value. Thats why our family is on our third used car--spanning almost ten years--from Powell Motors. Vince and co. always go out of their way to serve us, patiently listening to our automotive needs and working to find us something great in our budget. We have not been disappointed and the quality of the cars seriously blurs the line between New and Used. But what really keeps us coming back is the honesty and integrity of those working at Powell Motors. I can think of no better recommendation than to say that Vince will truly have your interests at heart in the car-buying process. In other words, Powell Motors actually listens to YOU, rather than simply selling something THEY think you should like. "Thoughtful" isnt exactly what you associate with used car dealers, but here its perfectly apt. So next time youre in the market for a car, do yourself a favor and visit Powell Motors--you wont be disappointed.
