I really dislike pushy sales people and go out of my way to avoid them. So I was relieved when I arrived at Hertz car sales and was told to take a look around and then let them know if I was interested in any of the vehicles. No one lead me around the lot trying to sell me a car - I really appreciated this. I ended up test driving a Kia Forte and was very interested in the car. Ray Lopez was an excellent sales person. He was very pleasant and warm and was never pushy about any element of the sale. Ray provided car fax before I even had the chance to ask. I wanted to have my mechanic look at the car and Hertz offered to drop it off and pick it up for us. I returned to complete the sale with my mom who was co-signing. We had looked up the value of the car on Kelly Blue Book and offered them a lower price than they were asking. We were both ready to play the ridiculous negotiation game but the sales manager agreed to our price. This is where Hertz really lives up to its claim of being the "anti-dealership dealership". We both appreciated this immensely and were feeling really great about doing business with them. Then, we headed over to the finance office to sign the final paperwork. I wanted to give Hertz a 5 star rating for every other part of my experience. However, our interaction with the finance manager was so unpleasant and stressful that I had to go with 4. This is the part where they try to sell you an extended warranty. The finance manager went through his memorized spiel without taking a breath or checking in to see if we understood. It was immediately apparent that we were no longer having a conversation. He made it clear that we would be "riding the lightening" if we didnt purchase their extended warranty. He had plenty of anecdotes to try to scare us into buying. He told us that it was now or never (which is not true). He seemed extremely irritated when we questioned him and maintained a dominant, condescending attitude. Hes also a large man which adds to the intimidation factor. We are both very thankful that we had a prior engagement and had to leave for a couple hours at this point and return later. This gave us a chance to process the decision and avoid being bullied into one. When we returned and told him that we were not going to purchase any of their coverage, we both felt that he was very angry with us. He asked us why we werent going to purchase and continued to try to scare us into it. The rest of the interaction was curt and tense. We both left his office feeling extremely uncomfortable and stressed out. It was such an intensely negative encounter that it dominated our experience that day. After doing some reading, I discovered that I have until my original warranty expires to purchase an extended warranty and this is something I can do through many different companies (and in fact, the extended warranty overlaps with the original so if you buy it early, youre paying for needless double coverage). We feel really good about walking away without the Hertz warranty. I will purchase an extended warranty from another company after shopping around and comparing prices. I still want to give Hertz a high rating because they truly were wonderful to work with up until the end. I feel some guilt about writing such a harsh review about a single individual; however, if Hertz wants to improve customer satisfaction, they need to know how much this final encounter tainted our otherwise positive experience. This person really needs some additional training in order to avoid customers walking out the door feeling like we did. Thank you again to Ray Lopez and the sales manager Paul for a lovely car buying experience. I am really loving my Kia Forte!

Sept 12, 2011 Situation: Cash buyer on a very used vehicle Summary: Not the easiest place to buy, and whatever you do, dont trade your vehicle in here without getting a "price check" elsewhere. This was the first successful purchase of a vehicle for me from Hertz on W 11th in Eugene. The sales persons (Mark & Jeff) who helped me did their best to make the experience seamless. Im relatively happy with the price I paid for the vehicle, and the fact that it was delivered smoothly thanks to Kory the sales manager, and Jeff, my delivery salesperson. HOWEVER, there are a few things that made this difficult. First of all my trade: I was offered $950 under "FAIR" KBB value on a 2007 with one small ding in it. They tried to explain that they needed to recon the vehicle. KBB FAIR is designed to include those costs. Are you kidding me? How do you miss a trade by $2,000? I drove down the road to the first dealer I came to and was offered $2,300 more, in cash, without buying a vehicle from them. I went to three places, and every single one offered $1,800-2,300 more. Yet Hertz wouldnt budge, even after I sent them auction pricing results. I was finally forced to separate my transaction into two different deals, one with Sheppard Volvo for my trade (talk about easy to work with Id buy from them anyday), and one with Hertz for the purchase of my new vehicle. In my opinion they should have offered to try to sell the vehicle for me, why did I have to drive to all those places and arrange the deal on the side? Second, after accepting their "E-Price" (which was only $1,300 off their asking price, and over KBB retail) without even arguing, I only asked for two things: a clean car which Jeff already had taken care of, and a full tank of gas. They initially refused to fill up the gas tank, citing a "corporate" limit of $30 of gas. Thankfully my salesperson Jeff quickly resolved that, and ensured the vehicle was absolutely spotless, and full of gas upon pickup. I was incredibly please with how the vehicle looked, but Hertz Corporation should thank Kory and Jeff for me not walking out of there. It seems like we have to argue about every little detail when I bought. Im not the easiest person to work with admittedly... Although the management (Kory) was very good, and the salespeople (Jeff & Mark) very good as well, their hands seem to always be tied to the "corporation" approving everything. Free them up to do their job for goodness sakes. Being told the "company" wont approve the deal or the "company" wont approve your trade doesnt make me feel like doing business there. UPDATE: I called Jeff (salesperson) last week to ask if they had an OZONE machine that I could try to use to remove the smoke smell from the vehicle I purchased. He transferred me to the service department. As soon as you buy the car you are definitely on your own. There is absolutely no cost to the dealership to run that machine, but I get to pay to remove the smell. Revised rating to two stars. I hate nickel and diming.

I am pleased with the service with Jeff, the salesman, who responded me promptly and helped me to pick right car I wanted. However, beware of the finance department if you are getting finance through them. Provide your own finance plan through your insurance or the bank. Otherwise, you have to be careful! I got finance through Hertz and I was kind of careless about reading the documents because I was in so much hurry for going back to the work. Finance man, Sean, wanted me to buy some kind of service plan that I didnt want to. He kept giving me the numbers and convinced me with the affordable plan. I know all those service wouldnt be unnecessary, but decided to have one because I kind of felt like to hep him. Finally, he put the contract in the envelope and sealed it tight and told me not to open it until I get my registration and license plate from DMV with smiley face. I trusted him, but was too much naive. I clearly mentioned that I wanted 3 years term for the finance at first, but he changed it to 4 years term so that he could give me a right numbers for monthly payment. Well, he included over $4,500.00 service plan on my loan amount! Most of all, he didnt tell me anything about it! I almost got shocked and felt like I was deceived! I called the business manager, who were helpless. He told me that he couldnt help me because he doesnt know anything about the finance department. When I talked to the Sean, he promised me to send me the cancellation form right away, but he never did. He didnt do anything! It was Rose, the lady who actually apologized and handled the problem. However, it took almost a month for me to resolve this problem! I have got 3 cars from Hertz over 5 years, but I am not going to deal with them anymore. The cars were fine. The salesman was fine. Its just finance department who didnt care about the customer, but the money!
