While I generally dislike chain pet stores for their just-barely survivable conditions for pets, this Petco location was the best that Ive seen in this general area, with one on the Haverhill/NH border being the absolute best. I dont know what happened in the past year or so. Maybe a new manager that didnt care about the animals got the job. But I went in the other day and I was completely disgusted with it. All of the bettas were starving, quite a few sick ones, and dead ones that have been sitting in the cup for at least a month or two. I gagged when I found one that was so rotten, the water was brown and the dead fish fell apart when I lifted the cup--a sign it hasnt been touched since it died back in the spring! The other fish werent doing so well. There were four quarantined tanks full of sick fish, and one that had a single picked-apart corpse in it. Was the fish who killed it hungry, or was it predatory? Why wasnt the corpse removed along with the perpetrator? As for the reptiles, they didnt look like they were in terrible condition, but the only staff member on the floor was asked by a kid to hold a lizard. He proceeded to slam his hand on the glass to knock him off the tank wall, so hard that the turtle I was looking at on the endstand ducked into his shell. The mice were in absolute poor condition. There were about 20 or so mice packed into a 10 gallon tank, three of which were definitely sick. One was either beaten up or had a skin infection, as his body was covered in sores and his fur was falling out. Another one had his eye clawed out or was beginning to develop an infection. And the third was in the worst condition of all: his tail was broken and infected, along with having a urethral infection of some type, as it was swollen and icky-looking and he stopped every few seconds to scratch or chew at it. The birds all were picking at their feathers, one had red feces. All of them were scared or vicious. The staff was the biggest disappointment of them all. I asked the clerk to speak to the manager. When I said that there were a lot of dead fish, her friendly attitude dropped entirely. The manager followed me to the bettas, and roughly handled every cup I handed to him, including the live ones that were sick. When he started picking up the cups to check for other sick fish, he would pick them up like he was handling an inanimate object, and slam them back down on top of other cups of fish. My jaw dropped as I watched the entire shelf of fish dart around, very clearly stressed out. He then walked over to the fish wall and handed them to the only other staff member, and disappeared. No words were exchanged, no apologies, no thanking me for finding these rotting fish. I could be wrong, but considering the complete disregard for the bettas, Im almost positive they poured the sick fish down the drain. When I found yet ANOTHER dead betta, I handed the cup to the staff member, who sighed and sang "dead fish, dead fish" as he poured it down the drain. Again, no words were exchanged. I complained loudly as I left, which was useless as the cashier rolled her eyes and there were no other customers in the store. Im in the process of writing a formal letter to the manager and the district manager. I plan on checking up on them over the next few weeks to see if their conditions have improved. Otherwise, Ill be reporting them to the Humane Society. Do not shop there, even for supplies. PetSmart down the road has much better prices, they take much better care of their animals, and the staff has half a brain when it comes to animal husbandry and customer service. Its a total shame that they went downhill, and it breaks my damn heart to see these animals in this condition.

The owner/proprietor of this Petco, is always available to help with dietary questions, etc. Anyone who had a dog (or cat), with allergies knows the frustration in finding the right food that is allergy friendly, but also healthy. My dog has been through countless changes and one day when I was about o throw the towel in the Saugus Petco owner talked with me for over 30 minutes and directed me to what had become a life saver for my dog! The store is also meticulously clean & well stocked.

This Saugus store has the cleanest fish tanks Ive ever seen and I go to many stores looking for new fish for my huge aquarium. Its also one of the only stores that has help that actually know what they selling and very knowledgeable about the fish and who is compatible with other fish or not,. I always get good advice and its my #1 store to go to for all my aquarium needs. thanks!

Very nice store. All animals are active and in good condition. Staff are very knowledgeable and friendly. Especially thank you for Rick who spent a lot of time for our family teaching telling showing and helping to choose everything what we need for having parakeet. Awesome experience with this Petco location :-)

Pretty average Petco. I was there on a rainy Saturday morning, so the smell of wet dog was really strong. I wish these stores would have a separate entry for people that bring their dogs in.

Generally good selection of fish and fish food. Wish they had a bigger selection of South/Central American cichlids but thats not their fault. Mostly come for the great staff
