Ive gone to a lot of Wal-Mart stores in a lot of different places in at least 5-6 different states and I can say in complete confidence that the Ankeny, IA Wal-Mart is the most dysfunctional, disorganized, and mismanaged Wal-Mart Ive ever been in . Ive never had so much trouble not being able to find specific items that Ive easily found in other local Wal-Mart stores. The overall layout of the store leaves a lot to be desired when compared to other better organized Wal-Mart stores in and around Central Iowa. The employees are not friendly at all. Ive never once been approached and asked if Ive needed any kind of help finding anything and Ive lived in Ankeny for over three years now. The predominantly female cashiers are rude and when you approach them to check out at a register you get scowled at as if youre doing them a disservice by coming and spending your hard earned money in their store. Ive long sympathized with Wal-Mart employees as they are generally underpaid and overworked and I used to work retail myself but that doesnt make it okay at any point to ever take out your frustration on the customers. These people dont seem to have any pride or to take any pride in what they do. Ankeny Wal-Mart is often packed with people. Sundays in particular are extremely busy with a lot of people going out for groceries. It is especially frustrating when youre trying to navigate through a maze of people to get your shopping done and there are employees standing around either doing nothing, or doing things that are completely nonsensical. Shelves should only be stocked on an as needed basis during rush times. Instead this Wal-Mart has employees pulling out pallettes and clogging up the aisles to restock product that doesnt necessarily need to be restocked at the given time. It just adds to the stresses of trying to shop elbow to elbow and it goes against everything I was taught when I used to work retail. The employees in charge of cart retrieval at this store are by and far the worst Ive ever dealt with. I was in the store earlier this month and nearly all the cart corrals outside were full of carts to the point carts were extending into the parking lanes so you were forced to drive around them. To make matters worse when you walked into the store there were literally no carts. An older woman asked a male Wal-Mart employee in a yellow reflective vest where the carts were and he actually told here to go to the other side of the store! So effectively if you wanted a cart you were supposed to either A) Get one from the cart corrals or B) Walk all the way to the side opposite the grocery side with the slim hope there would be carts there. Absolutely ridiculous. It makes you wonder what the hell management is doing. I used to work at Toys "R" Us and I was out getting carts around the holiday season in the slush and snow, manually shackling them with the seat belts together and then pushing them back into the store so it would be convenient for our customers. Wal-Mart provides their employees with motorized vehicles for pushing a ton of carts effortlessly and they still cant stay on top of replenishing their carts. The bathrooms are also disgustingly filthy. Partly a fault of nasty people who abuse the public restrooms but I dont believe the employees are on top of inspecting and cleaning the bathrooms at all. Ive seen bathrooms at other Wal-Mart stores that are much cleaner and well maintained which proves my theory. The floors in the Ankeny store are also dirty. Theyve recently been waxing the floors but it seems they didnt even bother to strip and clean them beforehand so now youve got stains and streaks on the floor that are sealed under fresh coats of wax. I just hate that this is the store thats closest to me and I despise every time that I have to go in as its an exercise in frustration.

Almost every time I shopped there I left with half of what I came for because they are always out of stock on most things I went for. Also During times like the night before a holiday or other known very busy times, try to have more than 3-4 registers going. They have like 30 frickin check out lanes and 3-4 active at busy times. One night I was there late on the night before Easter, and it was a crazy zoo of people. They only had two checkout lines working and two self-check terminals turned on. I stood there for probably 15 minutes as the line never moved and they kept calling for more help up front from all the other Departments but nobody ever showed up (they should have all been fired for that). I had a heavy basket full of stuff and I finally just dropped it right there in the middle of the main corridor and walked out, went to Target, got my all my stuff again, walked up to an empty checkout line and was off on my way. I would have still been in line a Walmart. I would say 90% or more of the people there that night were from the East side of Des Moines. Walmart needs to build a store on the East side of Des Moines. The people on that part of town dont have any shopping, other than the old K-Mart on Hubble, and have to drive clear the heck to Ankeny, which also makes the Ankeny store overly busy and unable to keep up. I think the empty lot where Eastgate Shopping Center used to be would be a perfect spot for a Super Walmart, and it would also help renew that area and increase business/revenue for all the other business around it and probably bring in a few more new places. And the Ankeny store, which already serves a lot of smaller towns on top of the 56k and rapidly growing Ankeny, wouldnt be over burdened. These days I shop at Target and avoid Ankeny Walmart like the plaque. Its just too damn busy all the time and always out of stock. And many many people I know in the Ankeny area do the same now.

I spent easily $100-$200 on a shopping trip. Disappointedly to say there was always wrong charges at this Walmart. First was a shampoo, Walmart charged $2 over the sticker price( $18 vs $16). By the time I verified the overcharge and brought back the receipt(it still had $16 same price on the shelf), it was around 10 days. I had to stand in line (long line, one person was working) to point out their mistake. Instead of getting an apology and a commitment to correct the price, I was scolded for not coming back soon(7days?) because their prices changed all the time. Another time was wrong price on pears, recently was on a melon(list price $2.48, charged $4.90 taxable). It seemed the pricing mistake was high since Im not a regular shopper here. It was a big hassle and very time consuming to get the money back. The line was always long with one person working in the customer service dept. It made me wonder if the store did not want to hear what the shoppers had to say. There was hardly "customer service" at this store. During rush hours, there was not adequate number of cashiers working. I decided Ill do my shopping somewhere else.

Shame on me for going to Wal-Mart to save $10. Its not worth it. Ive been to this Wal-Mart many times, although I shop at their competitors much more often than there because of the usual Wal-Mart issues - dirty stores, employees who wont communicate with you and avoid helping you, long lines, out-of-stock items, and poorly zoned shelves & displays. Im writing this because I bought a new WiFi router there, and after paying, the cashier couldnt get the security device off of the router. So she directed me to customer service. I then stood in line for 20 minutes to be able to walk out the door with the item Id already purchased. I was given no option. Just stand and wait. No efforts were made to get additional staff to the service desk to help. Not a good experience.
