The only reason I remotely like this place is because you can interact with the animals, which in itself is a double edged sword because not only are the animals being forced to play with grabby hands all day, but they can get diseases. Ive played with some puppies there, most of which were relatively nice but theyre just babies so of course you should expect them to nip, but all the animals are kept in INCREDIBLY small cages, often with another dog!! These cages are BARELY 2ftx2ft for the smaller pups, which are often kept in pairs. The bigger ones (German Shepherds, Rotts, etc) are kept in slightly larger cages, usually by themselves. Every cage Ive seen was dirty and cramped. The kittens are the same; last time I went, this poor dirty Persian kitten was SLEEPING in its LITTER BOX. I have known one person who purchased a dog from here, and she was very sick when they first got her (which the store was aware of) and she had ticks! My sister purchased a very nice hamster from here, but it died last week after only having it for a month. The place is noisy and not well managed. I sincerely feel bad for ANY animal that has been quartered here, no matter how long they lived and how healthy they were. Outside the animals, the merchandise is way too overpriced. My family keeps fish as well, and every time weve bought them from Aquarium Adventure, we have gotten extras because a couple always die within the first week or so. Thankfully, the AA staff is usually knowledgeable about their fish, but the Petland staff is awkward and not very helpful. They need to hire people who genuinely care about animals and their well being. The only time a staff member actually helped me was when my cousin wanted to purchase a wheel for her rabbit, and a staff member noticed this and told her that rabbits cannot use wheels, so we are thankful that she jumped in or else something bad couldve happened. Ive met the manager and he was very huffy, not only to me, a customer, but to the staff member I was talking to at the time. Also, I own a bearded dragon and the reptile section of AA concerns me mainly because of substrate choices (they house the lizards on sand, which they can swallow and cause impaction; newspaper is a super cheap alternative) and what they feed them (ive seen mainly dried vitamin pellets and mealworms); thankfully I have yet to see two adult beardies housed together, though one I saw last time was severely overweight as beardies are prone to be. IN CONCLUSION, Id just avoid going here, the cons heavily outweigh the pros and I wish this establishment were investigated, because it would immediately be shut down.

I will begin this review by educating the general public in the Chicago Northwest Suburb area. We would always go to Petland to look at puppies as I know a lot of us do, its fun and its a good way to kill time, but one day we saw a puppy that we fell in love with so we decided to purchase it. Yes, it was way overpriced, but you pay for convenience. The dog was great for a couple days. then became severely ill. Im not retired, but we spent a lot of money and time trying to keep the puppy alive. Breathing mask, medications, special food and a lot of time. I wouldnt recommend this place to my worse enemy. I felt horrible that we fell in this trap. We didnt do our research before making the purchase and we werent educated. Nothing against the staff, I understand that they need to support their families just like everyone else. They are lied to by the higher ups in where these dogs come from(Or they are good liars or people like us just dont care to ask for the breeders information and go home and take the time to search information on them). Puppy mills is correct in our case. We searched the information of our breeders and sure enough they have had multiple encounters with the law in relation to animal cruelty as well as some lawsuits. The name of the company Petland bought our dog from was Top Notch Puppies Inc, owned and operated by Carla and Tom Steffensmeier( I invite you to google them). This truly makes me sick and Petland knows it. I wasnt much of an animal person and would never post a review about this, but this is truly disturbing. I invite you to please do your research before even considering buying from this place. If your truly going to consider buying a dog go elsewhere, search for reputable breeders, dont fall in the same steps that many of us have been scammed. Eventually this place will go out of business and the cruelty will stop(At least at this location). Moral of the story is to stay away from this place. Spread the word and together we can make sure this location goes out of business, remember we are the consumers, and if we stop aiding these businesses, they will eventually go down. I will conclude this review with a famous quote once said by a really successful business owner, " There is only one boss. The customer. And he can fire everybody in the company from the chairman on down, simply by spending his money somewhere else" - Sam Walton.

If 0 stars was an option Id choose it! We purchased a "teddy bear" puppy whom they claimed came from a reputable and well documented breeder (heads up: RESEARCH the source. This specific breeder currently has over 1,000 puppies and VERY POOR reviews!!!), was up to date on shots (untrue by 1 month with critical shots needed and overdue!), whose microchip had all the correct information (shes clearly a female and all of her paperwork states she is a male), and aside from needing to be groomed was a happy and quiet puppy.... We took her to our vet (dont bother with the "free" vet checkup, as theyre contacted with Petland and ours was "overall healthy and just needed a haircut." Come to find that our puppy has Giardia, is anemic, and needs a good amount of her teeth pulled or filed down because of careless breeding. All in all, with an initial round of blood work plus medicine, an appointment for her spay, plus her dental issues she has incurred $2,500+ in fees, including her purchase from the store. By the way, when you purchase an animal from here all they care about is that your drivers license and credit card match, and that the transaction is approved. Theres no background check or well-being check for where the animal will reside. They couldnt care less if youre a pleasant and loving person or an abusive torturer. All they want is the sale to make room for another poorly cared for animal. AVOID PETLAND AND ALL STORES LIKE IT! It may seem sweet and innocent to check out the puppies and kittens and let your kids play with them, but youre exposing yourself and your family to these unfortunate animals who either are or may be harboring illnesses that can be easily contracted. In the end the animals are the unfortunate results of careless and greedy breeders who see the dollar signs only.

I have to in good conscience inform the general public of the health problems of our Chihuahua purchased from the Petland Store in Schaumburg, IL. My family and I purchased a puppy from this store three years ago. Since the first week of owning our Chihuahua he has been ill. He has severe breathing problems, large fontanel which has never closed which could result in brain injury from a simple bump on the head, luxating patella (which is a congenital defect), is extremely obese caused by (bad blood lines/inbreeding) as 3 Veterinarians have stated to the owner, Dan Star in written letters. The puppy/dog eats twice a day 1/4 cup of dietary food at $50.00 a bag. Our Chihuahua also has an elongated palette and his gate is not correct so he is in pain when he walks, let alone run. He will be on medication for pain and breathing assistance for the rest of his life, which can cause liver damage. Mr. Star refuses to deal with the very people who keep his sham of a business going. It sickens me that this store is still operating and able to sell these very sick puppies that come from who knows where. Mr. Star, you will face your maker some day, then explain why you would put these poor animals and families through such pain and financial burden. We hope that you, the general public, will reconsider purchasing a puppy from this store filled with sickly puppies and think about giving a good loving home to a puppy from a shelter who truly needs it. We need to take a stand and NOT put another dime in Mr. Stars pocket to run this sham of a so called business. Mr. Star has to look in the mirror everyday at himself...sickening. Thank you for your time to be informed before making your decision on purchasing your new addition!
