I went in with a very specific laptop in mind. I left with a completely different one that has far more bang for the buck - and it was virtually the same price. The sales guy, while a little brusque when I asked a few more ignorant questions (I am by no means tech-illiterate, but I dont make it my mission to stay on the very forefront of laptop technology news), was otherwise extremely knowledgeable and helpful. He was very direct about the initial laptop I was interested in, saying it was a workhorse, but that there were other options with a little less performance that would offer me features more in line with what I wanted. He directed my attention to another laptop, indeed less powerful but with features I hadnt considered. Exact same price. "Well," I thought, "this is interesting." He continued to show me other laptops, all of which were the same price or below what I looked at originally - never once did he try to upsell. Finally, I settled on a nice refurb that has pretty much everything I want. He got a little pushy with the warranty and anti-virus sales pitches, but I cant blame him. I worked at Best Buy, I know how it goes. I did wind up going with a failure warranty, which was reasonably priced. Overall, I was really impressed with the experience, and while Im still test-driving the laptop, I have looked around and it really is one of the more well-reviewed machines online. I had no idea it even existed - nor that Micro Center would have a good price on it. With tax, I likely paid a bit more than if I had ordered it online, but with a big purchase like this, Id rather be able to return the laptop and walk out with another one if I decide its not for me. A nice touch: the store manager greets and thanks all customers who purchase laptops. Its a gimmick, sure, but it definitely makes you feel good about buying there. I know its not really "local," but Micro Center is in competition with the likes of Best Buy and other big-box stores. I dig having something like it around.

Just wanna share some of my experiences with all of you out there looking for a place that have it all. You can not judge a place in this category unless you are or wanna to become a geek.... I am not saying I am one just yet but I do have experience to have at least an opinion. This place is awesome.... Good quality products and warranty even if its optional, good selection of brands and plenty of options. They do most of the time match the price with some online selling sites, exceptional knowledge and understanding of all products and thats so important for buyers. And of corse they do have few things where they need improvement: sometimes it happen but it does you cant find somebody available to help you out with your purchase and that can be frustrating but as I said its not all the time. Again if you are looking for a place to buy all most anything in this category this Is your best choice, but if youre looking for butt kissing ...well...its not the right place. For Management: you guys ....good job For sales guys: stop chasing people with those stickers...we know how important those are for you but sometimes its rude to stop somebody and put the sticker on the products they found by them self with no help from you. I think the store needs a directory like in malls or just a little map to make easier for all of us to find what we need. Thx again for the opportunity to share my ideas. Peace.

I felt like a kid in a candy store when I walked in. Granted the place is a little old, a bit unorganized, and could use a dusting but its the kind of store you dont see much anymore. A building filled with parts for your computer. I approached a salesman and he was able to get me directly to everything I needed without having to run around (SATA cable, OEM Windows, & 3.5" bay card reader) and was very helpful. Having shopped online for similar items their prices were low without having to hassle. To those of you trolling about used or returned products I would recommend taking a good hard look at what youre buying before you hand over the cash. Having worked at a flea market for nearly a third of my life I like to think I know something about buyer protection. Always make sure the item you are purchasing is either shrink rapped or shows no signs of tampering. If the product has been re-packaged or taped you should recognize that a variable amount of risk is involved with buying the product. Never let a salesman rush you into any decisions. YOU CAN ALWAYS SAY NO! I would absolutely recommend this place to anyone in the Chicago area.

Being in the IT field, I build/repair computers for friends and family when theyre in the need of computer services. That being said, its nice to be able to go to a store and pick up parts immediately. Dont get me wrong, I am a fan of online sites like Newegg, but sometimes, you just need the part right away. I like Micro Center because they have decent prices but at times, they have really good sales. Ive picked up many a CPU from them during sales. I also like the order online and then pick up at the store feature. Ive had mixed results in terms of check out times when picking up an online order, but at the same time, Ive had difficulty finding some items like USB car chargers when Im browsing the aisles, so its nice to find the item online and have them have it ready for you when you arrive. The store doesnt look as flashy and big as say, Best Buy, but if thats what keeps the prices down, then Im all for it. Im pretty knowledgeable about the items I buy so I rarely ask for advice at the store so I cant comment on how knowledgeable the associates are but Ive never had a problem with them helping me find something.

I felt like writing a review due to the fact that I have had such fantastic experiences at Micro Center I felt everyone should know! I moved to Chicago from an area of the country where there are no Micro Centers and was a bit skeptical of this store. I ended up purchasing a refurbished laptop, it has served me well for over a year now, and it was $249 cheaper than Best Buy. I went back to purchase a gaming desktop, the staff explained my options the pros and cons of each unit I was interested in, and in the end set me up with the best machine for my purposes. Recently I went back to get a new router...the sales person explained my options and I decided on one that would have been about $130-40. Now the staff I believe makes some sort of commission, but when I decided on the router the sales staff pointed pointed out that the same router could be purchased for less if I wanted to get a refurbished model. The refurbished model was only $59.99...awesome router! My gaming experience has improved 10 fold! Micro Center is just an all around great place to shop for anything computer/tech!

Long lines are super frustrating. I have been to the store several times and typically avoid going there because of the long checkout times. This time was no different and I was so pissed I felt the need to leave a review... Two people were in the checkout line so long that they said it wasnt worth it and walked out. I stayed and waited 20 minutes to get to a register while someone who I assume was a manager stood off to the side watching the line. If I were that manager I would have gone to a register and opened it up so customers had a shorter wait. When I did get to the register the credit card thing wasnt working and I had to go to another one. The employees in the isles are super helpful and nice but the front of the store is a big miss managed mess. Also for the record I hate being asked for my name and address like Im at RadioShack. I just wish everything was quick and efficient because they often have what I need I just hate the checkout. Oh having sales people chase me down to put a sticker on something because they answered a question is also ridiculous. Just saying.
