What do you say about Microcenter? I mean, its a retail place that specializes in computers and electronics. Think what would happen if the now defunct Radio Shack and Circuit City had a baby together. Lets take a tour that will be useless in a few months, Im sure. When you walk into the location youre bombarded with a table stacked with "hot" items. Yesterday (and Im guessing today) it happened to be VR viewers. To the right there is another set of tables with "hot buys" to include a handful of drone options and other R/C devices, such as a little robot. Behind those tables is the Customer Service/Return counter and next to that the PC repair/diagnostic center. Id heard a rumor they stopped competing with Geek Squad and only diagnose now, so I cant tell you whats going on. They used to offer full blown repair services. As you walk down the aisle towards the back of the store, your left has SD cards, flash drives and other little quick grabs and to your right you come upon the computer parts, printer and photography center. Here youll find, well, computer parts (cards, drives, etc), printers, both 2D and 3D as well as their little camera section with point and shoots, 360°, action cams, video and DSLR. This is also the area where youll find networking gear: routers and hubs. Further down the main aisle and youll discover a small TV land, then the PC area. No, not "politically correct," but laptops, desktops, gamer setups and tablets. Next to the PC area is the Apple (yes, Apple) area where youll be shocked and amazed at the selection of Apple products, to include iPod minis, Macbooks, iMacs and all the overpriced Apple accessories you could want. Passed the Apple section is an area that used to be gamer-central but now looks like an old Radio Shack: tools, electric motors, wiring, capacitors (I dont know if they carry components, to be honest), gamer gear and more. Beyond that is an area with books and magazines. In the middle of the store are aisles and aisles of everything else: headgear, speakers, laptop bags, mouses (meeces?) keyboards and everything else. On the other side of the aisles are ever more aisles with blank CDs, DVDs, fans, ties, networking cables, seat cushions and everything else you didnt know you might need. Then theres the registers before the exit. If youre a techno-nerd, geek or IT professional, youll probably get a little too excited within those walls. If youre like the rest of us, it may seem overwhelming and/daunting. If thats the case, never fear! Microcenter scoured the basements of parents everywhere to find you the most knowledgeable geeks whom their parents made get a job. Theres: Tall Guy With Pony Tail and Scruffy Beard, Short Guy Who Needs and Haircut and Acne Meds, Skinny Guy Who Still Doesnt Know How to Buy Clothes, and Man Whos Upset Hes Not Online Gaming Right Now. All of them are nice enough, none of them have ever heard of an iron. But dont be scared, theyre all harmless. However, if youre a woman, dont be put off if they cant make eye contact. Its the nature of the beast. I would have taken pictures but I was on the phone the whole time I was there so I didnt get a chance. Maybe next time.

On Wednesday, October 1, 2014 at 5:10PM in Denver, Colorado (8000 E Quincy Ave) , I had one of the worst experiences (definitely the last experience) with Micro Center that I have ever experienced. First, let me express my initial interest in Micro Center. They offer a wide variety of services and ultimately, they are a "one-stop" for anything needed for your network, configuration, etc. I was so elated with their variety that I decided to purchase a computer & monitor from them and a vow to become a regular customer- Im a techie, so this store to me is like a candy store for geeks like myself :). On this particular day, I was just purchasing some more specs need my new computer setup. I had ordered all of my items online with the option to pickup later at the store. I browsed around, grabbed a mousepad, and headed to the counter designated for pickups only. I waited in queue ( their were 2 reps at the counter and a customer, who I assumed was checking out). Rep #1 assisted the woman, while the other seemed to be occupied with a customer far off in the regular checkout lines up front. So, after Rep #1 was finished, I should be next right? WRONG!! She informed me that the other Rep (Rep #2) would help me check out and she seemed to full engaged in her inventory list. So, when Rep #2 returns, I will finally check out right? WRONG!! Rep#2 returned and proceeded to grab a customer from the other checkout line and check him out before me. So, at this point, Im like did this seriously just happen?? Of course it did, unfortunately its a regular occurrence for a me. Rep#1 decided to chime in, since she happened to notice, when she wasnt looking at her inventory listing. She said, "Well, I dont think he saw you?" Seriously? I have heard of the invisible man, but not the invisible woman? (Sidebar: Was there ever an invisible woman? Just wondering) She then proceeded to smirk and scoff, "It should only take a second" ( So excuse the fact that I was here waiting to pickup my order before he summoned a totally different customer and I have a lot of free time on my hand especially since I just got off from work during rush hour traffic- of course! She then said, This is line is usually just for pickups, by which I replied, " yea, thats why Im here" as if I didnt notice the gigantic sign hovering over the counter. She then remember the portion of her Customer Service training then said, "Well let me get your order, so that you can be ready"... So nice of her right? As I waited, feeling totally disrespected- considering I just dropped $300.00 on my computer setup the week before, I did what I believed to be the best thing, since I didnt have a lot of time to wait for the disrespect that I was experiencing- I walked out. Instead of enduring all of the farce any longer and felt good to say the least because now I can bring my business elsewhere.

Ive always had great luck with PC parts and switches from here. But recently I was in need of a large amount of cat6 cabling. I purchased a 500 roll of cat6 cable and the first 100 had breaks in it. I have not gone back to return it yet but Im not sure if they will even accept the return since the cable has been cut a lot. Im not sure if it was a manufacture defect or if its from not being stored properly in the store ( The wooden spool of a 1,000 roll next to it was pressed into the side of the cable most likely causing the breaks.) I cut a foot off the beginning of the reel to avoid any breaks in the first place, so it was incredibly disappointing that 20% of the cable is completely useless since its impossible to tell exactly where the break is, and Im hesitant to attempt to pull another 100 off to test again. I pulled a small 3 section after the first 100 and it worked just fine. So I cut another 10 off the start of the 100 section (turning it into a 90 section that will not quite do what I need) and it still had breaks. Everything else Ive bought at this store (switches, ram, power supplies, hard drives, etc) has all worked flawlessly. So the fact that this CAT cable isnt bunk is incredibly disappointing. I probably will not buy any fiber cable from this location either which I was planning on doing to replace some older fiber for my servers. But if they cant even store copper correctly, Im absolutely not going to attempt to get any fiber here. UPDATE: Went back today to get CAT6 connectors, which showed online as having 3 in stock for a 10 pack of QVS connectors. While being unable to locate the particular pack I was looking for, a sales associate (Tim, I believe) was utterly useless in helping me find them. He spent 5 minutes researching the location of where they normally are on a PC (which I could have already showed him since I just bought some the other day) and after being unable to locate them in the normal spot, directed me to the bins above the shelf where the misplaced/non-stocked items were. While rummaging through the bins I noticed there were tons of fiber cables that were carelessly thrown in the bins with heavy copper CAT cable, which would indicate obvious breaks in the fiberglass tubing inside without even having to test them. This solidified my decision in not buying any fiber cable. On top of that, still unable to locate the CAT6 connectors I had initially planned on buying and left the store empty handed, after seeing 3 in stock on the website. The sales associate was unwilling to help me look through the bins to find the connectors, and I didnt have 2 hours to look through all of them myself. Seriously disappointed with microcenter now. Ill be buying everything else, including hardware, from newegg. Say goodbye to a solid $5K a year from me.
