I went to Hundley Hardware tonight to pick up some things. My contractor had given me a list and I needed help locating the items in the store once I got there. The man behind the counter was reading a book when I walked up and barely put the book down to help me. He did eventually manage to help me identify what I needed and recommended higher quality items that he had in the back. I left the store and got into my car just outside. I realize that I was in need of 2 more of one of the items that I purchased. I walked back up to the door 2 minutes later at 4:25pm, but the door was locked (store closes at 4:30pm). I knocked on the door and through the door, I saw a sales person who threw his arms in the air and said he didnt have a key. I said that I only needed to buy 2 more of the item that I had in my hand. He motioned for me to go to the side door. I walked in and went up to a sales person to show him what I needed. Immediately, he screamed "Jesus Christ, the lights are off, were closed!". I said that it was still 4:25pm. Angrily, he walked to the back. He looked at the item that I had and told me that the number on the package didnt match anything that they sold and that I couldnt possibly have purchased the item at Hundley. Perplexed, I reminded him that I had just left the store. I told him that I had a receipt, but it was in the car. He said, "go get it, then". So, I ran out to the car and got my receipt. By the time I returned, another employee had helped the salesperson locate the item. I bought the additional hardware that I needed and after I paid, I told the salesperson that I didnt appreciate the tone or accusation that I hadnt purchased anything at the store. I then reminded him that the store wasnt past closing hours. He said nothing and he didnt even look at me. Hundley hardware has great items, no doubt about it. However, the customer service was horrible. Shocking, in fact. I dont know how I can continue to support a store that is so rude and unprofessional. I am a huge supporter of local/small businesses. This is a case where I would have no problem buying these items at a chain store.

I tend to shop online for specialized hardware because its usually difficult to find a place that has a varied selection with reasonable prices in a brick/mortar store. This is one notable exception. Their selection is astounding and the prices on the stuff I was looking at beat any of the online retailers. I came in looking for combo access door lock for my business and talked to Dan Rodham who helped me out tremendously. He did his best to make sure I was getting exactly what I needed and not more. When I went to install the door locks, the configuration of the door necessitated some extra tweaking to the lock and some fabrication to the door to make it work. Each time I came back to the store with my new issues (which stemmed mainly from my not having the proper door measurements on my first visit), Dan helped me quickly and happily. You dont find this type of attitude very often these days. Thanks Dan.

Weve purchased over $100,000 worth of material from E.M. Hundley including solid doors, commercial locksets and other hardware needed for our jobsite. Ever since the beginning we noticed that these guys were going to be a difficult vendor. The customer service is horrible, they dont let you speak when you are explaining things, give you an attitude right away and certainly dont call back if you leave a voicemail. I would expect more from John Schaad but no emails returned, left a bunch of voicemails and dont hear back from them unless you call until someone feels like answering. This will be the last time we order material from this company.

Yes its true they have a ton of hardware for doors. Id read the lousy reviews before going there for a lock, and i had to chuckle upon witnessing stuff described by others. The guy at the front desk who couldnt be bothered getting off the phone, or the rude guy behind a counter by the side door, who was visibly annoyed by my question, and told me to ask someone else. Fortunately one guy did help me, but i had to see it to believe. I actually recommend going there just to see it, could be hit and miss, perhaps.

There arent many like this anymore, a true builders hardware with knowledgable employees who are proud of their expertise and the history of their workplace. Yesterday I need a few good brass wood screws for the door hardware of my Victorian home. Hundleys not only had exactly the sizes I needed, but allowed me to buy just the quantity I needed, as well. When the counter man rang them up, he asked about my project and offered suggestions. A nice experience.

Pros: huge selection of hardware and a large showroom. Cons: pretty bad/rude customer service and too strict of a return policy. I had one sales rep huff, sneer, and roll his eyes at me while making an order because I didnt have some dimensions immediately available for a custom order. Another rep kept rushing me to make a decision on a different order (Im guessing they work on some sort of commission). I wont be going back here.

This has to be the worst hardware store in the city. For one thing, the store hardly ever stays open. The service is lets just say less than helpful. I went looking for a particular knob. The guy at the front desk was so short with me its like I spit in his face by just asking a question. It was almost like he didnt want me there at all. If you are going to buy any hardware of any kind go somewhere else.

The worst customer service I have ever experienced. Incredibly unprofessional arrogant and rude. I strongly believe in supporting local small businesses, but this one is absolutely undeserving. I have given them many chances to improve but it simply gets worse. Please take your business elsewhere such as Belmont or Bauerware where they understand that retail is a service business.

I showed up 5 min before they were supposed to close for the day. The front door was locked. The guy behind the counter saw me outside the door, looked me in the eye, and then ignored me. I can only assume that this is a good example of how they care for their customers. Oh, and they dont copy keys. Who has ever heard of a hardware store that doesnt copy keys?

Free tip: dont place someone at a desk in the front entrance unless hes going to hang up the personal phone call and actually work. When I asked another person who looked like an employee a quick question, he simply (deathly) responded to see employees elsewhere in the store. They only have door stuff but dont cut keys…wtf?!? This is a hardware store?

Grant Hundley of Hundley Hardware has been in the business for decades and knows everything about doorknobs and other items for your home. We bought unique doorknobs from HH and are pleased with their selection and customer service. Highly recommended.
