I have been in NYC nearly 20 years and while i have at times shopped here, I rarely purchase anything from them. The selection is very limited and the salespeople have alot of attitude. This summer, I needed some equipment for a trip and to save money, I thought of renting rather than buying. Tents and Trails were happy to take my money for the rental and the deposit a week in advance, but when the trip was cancelled and I had to cancel my week-long reservation, they refused to refund EVEN ONE CENT of the rental charges! just two days after I made my reservation! Of course, they have discreetly hidden this information on their rental form, but the salesperson will be sure to not mention it when you make the reservation. I recommend trying REI or Paragon where the selection is better and they actually pretend to care about their customers.

Man, I really wanted to like this place - convenient location and nice to support an independent business - but I have experienced such terrible customer service every time Ive gone there. The first time, it took 20 minutes to get someone to stop ignoring me and tell me where to find what I was looking for (in a well-organized store, I wouldnt have had to ask in the first place). The second time, the guy I talked to was extremely rude, and once he finally answered my question (no, they didnt carry what I wanted), he also followed it up with a patronizing lecture on why I shouldnt even be trying to buy that type of item, without bothering to ask what I wanted it for. Also, a credit card minimum for an outdoor equipment store? Ridiculous. Ive given them second chances, but I wont make that mistake again.

For long distance hiking T&T doesnt really have an contemporary lightweight gear. It seems most of their stock is pretty out of date. They also dont have any of the trail guides thru-hikers actually use. The few times Ive been in their the creepy security guy who also works in the womens department also follows me around and does all but accuse me of stealing something. Its too bad because now all my business is going to their competitor Paragon or being spent online. While Im being honest... fix your website. The phone number on it is for a totally different business and the rentals section is blank.

Great store, indispensible for items of travel gear I inevitably need on a trip to the city. Thorough, friendly, helpful service. This kind of active gear apparel is pricey by nature but worth the investment. Check out the clearance rack, and ask about a cash discount on a sizable purchase. On Park Place in lower Manhattan. Take the E to WTC station, or the 2 / 3 to Park Place. Close to City Hall, to a couple of diners, to the World Trade Center and memorial site and of course to the financial district.

Before I visited NYC I emailed Tent And Trails about a jacket they had that I couldnd find in stock anywhere else in NYC. Ken emailed me back and agreed to hold it for me until we arrived, had to send a couple of emails regarding location/sizing ect and all were replied to within 24 hours. Arrived at shop and jacket was behind front counter waiting for me as promised. Really pleased with the jacket and the excellent customer service I received from them. Thanks again Chris

I was in the market for a backpack and wanted to buy from a local retailer. I would highly recommend Tents and Trails. The salesperson who helped me stayed within my budget, showed me my options and did not try to sell me something out of my range. He fitted the pack to my body which if I bought online would not have happened. And...the price of the pack was about $15-20 cheaper at Tents and Trails when I compared online. Staff was helpful and friendly - check it out!

I ordered a really nice northface coat from their website as a Christmas gift for someone. I ordered it a on the 19th so I emailed them after I completed my order to ask if it would be here by Christmas. The next day they emailed me back saying they out it through for.1 day priority mail and that it will be at my door the 21st. That alone made my Christmas. Thank you for a great stress free holiday shopping experience. Its very much appreciated.

I cant say enough good things. I called ahead and inquired about a special petzl volt wind harness. Very hard to get and only certain dealers are authorized to sell, the staff called petzl directly asking if they could order one for me which they did. They are willing to go the extra mile, I witnessed it. So glad I chose to buy my harness and accessories (which they measured me for) through Tent & Trails.

The store has a decent variety of items. But all seems like second hand (they are not) or the low line of the brands. But the worst part is that the staff working in the store, doesnt know nothing about their products. Ask them one or two questions and theyll be complete lost. Go to REI in Soho, more expensive but you certainly will find anything and the sellers know their business

Ken, the owner, really helped me. He got me a pair of hard-to-find quick laces for my Salomon trail runners. I couldnt find these laces anywhere, and he managed to get a pair from the manufacturer. And guess what? He didnt charge me anything. Where in the world can you find this kind of service in NYC? Thank you Ken! I highly recommend this place to all.

The guys on the lower salesfloor where the backpacks are, are extremly helpful and nice. Even after i couldnt find a suitable backpack at the store, they gave advice where to look for one. The guys on the upper floor are not really helpful. So if youre looking for a backpack: This is the place. Everything else: not so much.

I brought back a pair of hiking shoes that cost over $200.00 one day after I bought them. They were half a size too small. I was told I couldnt exchange the shoes because they were worn outside. Go to EMS. My buddy bought a pair of shoes there, wore them for over a month, and they still took them back.

They have tons and tons of stuff here. I found it very difficult to go in and just buy what I went in for, so many great things, great prices and things I cant find anywhere else. I only wish they had a larger more open space. I would like to go there and see some tents set up. Great place.

The staff is very knowledgeable. My wife and I have both had success getting the perfect hiking boots for our needs (taking trips to Peru and New Zealand). The staff worked with us to get the right equipment. Even better, the shoes we purchased are cheaper than zappos (even with the tax).

Good products, good choices, good advice, good people working here. Was very surprised that the very helpful men selling hiking gear had been to the Engadin, in Switzerland, where I live, and know some of the mountain guides there. I like to support this small, stalwart business.

Great gear that is hard to find anywhere else in Stock to try. If you are looking for a real hike/climb/camp store in New York, this is the place to go. A little on the higher price end, but every penny is worth it. The staff knows what to sell you and what is not for you.
