Favorite coffee shop in Orange County, providing consistently both a fantastical cup of joe and place to drink it. Friendly, helpful, interested staff and owner - Love child of Martin Diedrich, formerly of Diedrichs Coffee, and his wife. Named after their daughter, and somewhat personally stocked by the former, who has truly found his calling in the boutique coffee house business. I had the opportunity to live walking distance from this original Costa Mesa, edge of Newport Beach, location and will drive out of my way to meet here for a cup of coffee anytime its feasible. Since moving a few miles deeper into Newport Beach 8 years ago, there are still at least 2 of the same employees here as I write this. Ive reviewed less than 10 places publicly on the Internet, and though Im reluctant to bring more people here, I must say that if you have occasion to make this your regular coffee house you are amongst the luckiest coffee drinkers on the planet. Recommendation: If youve only the opportunity to come here once, grab yourself a latte for here and enjoy the latte art that pretty much comes standard.

I met a second cousin of mine here for coffee. This is the perfect place to meet people who are family though youve never had any kind of relationship with them before, and you dont plan to have any relationship in the future. He did tell me a great story about the owner. Apparently the proprietaire grew up in central america on a coffee plantation. Moved to the US when a corrupt regime overthrew the government (as you do). When he got here he made a very successful coffee chain, that was later bought by Starbucks. In the takeover contract, it said he was not allowed to make another coffee chain, however he was allowed to have one coffee shop. Thus Kean Coffee was born, and thats why it hasnt franchised. Yelpers tell me if Im wrong, Im just going by what some questionable distant relative told me.

"Martin (Diedrich) knows his beans," they say. That is an understatement. His family has been in the coffee biz for generations, I am guessing maybe a hundred years. He owned the Diedrich coffee chain but sold it and opened Keans. There are many superb coffee roasters all over, many around OC and more than one in Costa Mesa. But I consider Keans the best, the "real deal," and you dont want to miss it. Keans Golden Mean espresso is the best espresso I have ever found; I dont use anything else. Dr. Illy would be proud. And dont miss the many seasonal, plantation specific roasts he offers, all marked by roasting date, some rated by Coffee Review. If there was an equivalent to Master Sommelier in coffee, Martin would certainly be one and perhaps the only one.

Im not going to say this is the best cup of coffee Ive ever had, but its really close. Portola coffee in Costa Mesa has really set the bar in my opinion. I guess the best way to put it, is this is the kind of coffee Id like to drink everyday as my first cup in the AM. Portola would be, "I could go for an amazing cup of coffee right now and I have $ to burn." Kean offers tons of pastries and other breakfast food items, but Ive only had a bagel here, which was good. Ive also bought green (unroasted) beans to roast myself at home from Kean. They had limited options to choose from, but they came out delicious after I roasted them. Even though Im still pretty rusty at roasting. This is a fantastic coffee shop, I highly recommend it.

Ambiance: lively (usually busy and pretty noisy), casual, terrace with umbrellas and tables, inside seating as well. Parking/Location: intersection of Sherington Place and Irvine Ave, in a mini-shopping plaza, common parking with other businesses, few designated spots, parking lot gets full fast. Busiest times: weekend mornings Other businesses nearby: Promelis deli & market Enter either from Irvine Ave or Sherington Place What sets it apart: young, creative baristas, unique coffees and coffee art (Starbucks, watch and learn! ... although its mission impossible for Starbucks to get to their level) Suggestion: fewer paper cups and more porcelain (coffee art looks better on ceramic)

Im no official coffee snob, but I know the taste of GOOD coffee. And this place has just that, GOOD coffee AND a great atmosphere. They dont have wifi, which I love because it promotes face to face conversation versus staring at an electronic device. My favorite drink here is an iced honey vanilla latte. I get it with soy, but Im sure 2% milk is tasty just the same. A tip: weekends are jam packed. Be aware of morning foot traffic and parking difficulty - although its worth the hassle. Its also difficult to secure a seat inside. My advice is to go very early and scope out your spot. Bring a book or a friend, and enjoy your café.

I love this coffee shop! It has a really relaxed vibe and warm atmosphere. Not to mention that all of the drinks Ive tried have had very rich flavors and are fantastic if you like strong drinks. Also, this place easily has one of the best chai lattes I have ever had. The only downside is that during peak times, it gets packed and can have a line out the door and no seating, but I guess that just goes to show how great this place is!

Kean coffee is a world class coffeehouse and an OC standard. The proprietor Martin Diedrich has been in the coffee business for 40 years and comes from a rich family history of coffee importing and roasting. This depth shows throughout Kean; from the community feeling of the atmosphere to the open air roastery where you can watch Martin ply his trade... but most of all it show in the amazing coffee.

Kean coffee doesnt need more compliments. This place speaks for itself and stands on its own when it comes to quality. You know theyre serious when Mr. Diedrich himself is roasting coffee beans in the store. This place by far is the best coffee house Ive been to. The only reason Im writing this review is so that I can place Kean Coffee on the top of my list of favorite cafe.

Lots of people like it and if you are imto sugar, go for it. I like coffee, I usually test a place by gettimg an americano to see if the espresso is burnt, it is here. The staff are friendly and the sugary options are many, so if you dont lile the flavor of coffee and are going to mask it with sugar this place is quite good. It isnt my thing though.

Cool little spot, prettymuch always busy with regulars and visitors, but its rare you cant find a table. I hear theres no wifi, but I always bring a portable hotspot, so Im in the dark on that one. Coffee is good, not pourovers or anything, but they roast their own beans so its miles above any Starbucks. Neat vibe and everyone seems pretty friendly.

Ive been coming to Kéan since they opened and now living out of state, I make sure its my first stop out of the airport every time. Good things come to those who wait, and you will pretty much always see a wait here. This isnt a quick grab & go but rather a well worth the wait coffee experience. Love that they roast the beans right in the cafe too!

Came here for my bday dinner . Just was craving Thai food. I think price taste quality , environment and service are just very average compare to other once in Thai town. Especially the taste is just always saltier than I expected! It did help me satisfy my craving of Thai food , but not so satisfying. That why I can only give it a three.
