Ive been to every Safeway in San Mateo County at one time or another and this one is -- by far -- the worst. Admittedly, they have been trying to improve over the last few months (Im writing this is Jan. 2009) but they have so far to go even to catch up with their fellow Safeway stores that I doubt theyll ever get there. Poor selection, understocked on the items they do offer, expired items pulled (repeatedly) to the front rather than off the shelves, ancient and often dirty facilities, the poorest quality produce Ive ever seen at a Safeway (it seems regional just sends whatever they have left over at the end of the distribution run) and woefully understaffed. The few staff they have conduct business as well as they can with what little is available to them, but theyre overworked and badly demoralized. It used to be a decent place to shop when there was a competing Albertsons across the street, but ever since the competition closed up shop this place has been going downhill. Both local and regional management seemed to stop giving a damn because they knew Coastside residents had few grocery shopping options. We can go to the small and expensive market on Main Street, to the super-expensive organic place that moved into the Albertsons space, or to their facility. Or we can drive 24 miles round-trip up the coast to the Pacifica Safeway or 20 miles round-trip "over the hill" on Hwy 92 to the San Mateo or Belmont Safeway. Some choices!

I was in the store tonight about 8:30pm. I had to use the womens bathroom. The mens room had 2 signs taped on it that said it was out of order. I had to wait a few minutes as the womens room was occupied. When the woman finally emerged, she kicked the door open and advised me that there was no toilet paper and no paper towels. As I walked in, I could see that not only was there no paper products, the entire toilet seat was gone as well. There was also a lot of water on the floor to the left of the sink. Probably because there are no towels to dry your hands. I can only assume that this is the same bathroom that the employees use as well. So, how are the employees, washing and drying their hands before the go back onto the floor, where they are touching the produce, stocking the shelves and bagging our groceries?I all can say is EEEWWWWW..

This Safeway should pay their employees more or throw more company parties or something. Every time I go here to shop their employees look worn out with that "I hate this job" face on. Also this Safeway stayed a bit behind with the times, checking out is horrible sometimes, long lines with just 2 cashiers or cashiers always having register problems. Theres no self check out, so most of your time spent at this Safeway would be waiting in line to pay, no joke. And there bathrooms are gross, either there occupied or their missing toilet paper/paper towel. So if you come shop here just remember it will take a bit longer to get out of this place.

never been treated so rudely while spending money. the help "Miranda" was really friendly to the person ahead of us, but very rude to my wife and myself. No greeting, no thank you from her or her bagging person though we thanked them both each twice. Eye-rolling, rude tone of voice. Unreal. We will no longer shop here and neither will our families, you just lost at least $1K per week. Nice work.

This Safeway is unique in its lack of customer service, inadequate staff, and absurdly long lines. I dread every time I find myself in the area in need of groceries. I debate whether it will be more efficient to drive all the way to Pacifica rather than try to check out here.

From the friendly and helpful produce man, to the staff in the seafood dept who went above and beyond our questions and expectations and then the checkout which was super efficient even helping us get a Safeway card this is the store to shop at in Half Moon Bay.

The store manager Greg is an amazing manager! He is always taking care of his customers. The employees here are friendly and attentive. Too bad the old 1st Assistant isnt there anymore - He was top notch!!

Im from out of town and this store had pretty much all we needed except their selection of kitchen gadgets is very small. It helps if you have a club card or know someone with one to get some discounts.

Rarely covers everything you need and often doesnt carry the same product two weeks in a row. Its always a surprise trying to cook with groceries from here.

Pretty good store overall just park as soon as you get in the lot if its lunchtime, the place gets gridlocked
