New "security feature" at Westlake Shopping Center Safeway: Today my wife and I went into the Westlake Shopping Center Safeway to do our weekly grocery shopping; upon turning down the aisle containing grooming and cosmetic products (we were looking for toothpaste) we discovered that the store had installed a new "security feature" since our last visit only the week before. A full 2/3 of the products on that aisle, including all the toothpaste, were now locked inside plexiglass cases. In order to access the products in the cases a shopper has to go to the checkout counter, ask the checkout clerk to call for another employee to meet you back at the aisle, open the case and watch you as you read labels and decide which product you wish to select, then lock the case behind you. The problem with this, of course, is that they are treating their paying customers like they cannot be trusted; not to mention the maddening inconvenience one must now endure just to buy toothpaste! We decided that the toothpaste and skin cream was just not worth the trouble and decided we would go to another store and get our cosmetics, soap and grooming products. Upon moving to the next aisle we discovered a woman and her infant child waiting in front of another bank of locked cases waiting for someone to come and facilitate her access to the baby formula. She told us she had been waiting more than 10 minutes. Walking around this once convenient and well laid out store we found several other aisles with dozens of products locked behind plexiglass cases. My wife and I have decided to find a store other than Safeway. When we decide we have a free bank of time to go shopping, we want to make our list, go to the store, head straight to the products we need, and head to checkout to pay for our goods. Unfortunately, this is no longer possible at Safeway. Life is too short to spent a third of your shopping time waiting for someone to monitor your toothpaste selection.

Complaint on rude behavior at Tinas checkout line. It was on Oct 2nd around 7:30pm PST at Tinas cashier checkout line. My wife and I were buying 15 Similac infant milk for our 6 months old daughter and for our friends 5 months old son. We had Similac factory coupons and used these coupons all the time in different places, such as Target, Walgreens, Luckys, Babys R Us, etc and the checkout experience at these places were seamless and efficient. First time use these at Safeway and guess what? Tina made our experience very "enjoyable" in the worst possible way. First, not sure if she could read, she said "Oh, these coupons only apply to the product shown in the picture." I said: "The picture is for ads only. Here says it applies to ANY Similac formula." It went back and forth several times. Tina didnt believe in what I told her and brought the coupon to her branch manager for clarification. Came back, and she repeated the same statement that I told her before with attitude. As she proceeded with scanning on the coupons, on the 10th scanning, she started to mumble something like "it must be a low incoming thing". I said "Pardon me?" Then she deflected and asked me "the coupons have different names. Do these belong to you?" I was like: "Cant I buy these for my friend too?" I was quite furious already with her previous discriminatory statement and her impolite attitude. I threw back 2 Similac back to her and closed the transaction. The result? 1) Ethically shocked that Safeway actually employed such type of employee. Didnt she violate the Civil Rights Act 1968? 2) NOT baby friendly at all. Extremely cold hearted. 3) Extremely unhappy customer like myself and the family. 4) Hold up a long line to irritate the customers 1 bad apple spoils the bunch. Lets see how much more damage will Tina bring to Safeway in the future. Good luck!

Its small, they dont have many of the items Im used to Safeway carrying, and god forbid you have to buy something on a Sunday night (empty shelves everywhere, almost no fresh produce left, and the lines to check out are at least 20 minutes long). This place has potential, but its much too small for the neighborhoods it serves and it needs to be open 24 hours a day for the flow of traffic its handling on a daily basis. I honestly think that the surrounding neighborhoods have outgrown this tiny grocery store. It wont be long before Safeway has to pack up and move locations to something bigger, with better parking. My hope is that they can figure out a way to supersize the space they already have because it really is a prime location. Its the closest grocery store (besides Trader Joes) that has the best prices, so its a place I will have to keep shopping, but I wish corporate would wake up and realize just how much this place is starting to struggle under the bulk of demands the people it serves are putting on it. At the very, very least they could move to a 24 hour operation and ease some of the day-time traffic.

This place is horrendous. Theyve implemented a new "security feature" in which you cannot buy any personal items (i.e. Shampoo, toothpaste) yourself. A person must be paged and then that person has to take it to self check out immediately and you must pay for it right then and there, regardless of whether or not you have shopping to do. If you do not pay for it immediately you are not allowed to hold onto it, neither is the store employee. You must do it their way. Its ridiculous. The meat selection has downgraded. Very few things are available anymore, and are usually snatched up in the morning. There are only ever three lanes open. Never any more than that. It doesnt matter how busy the Safeway is, with checkout lines going all the way down the aisles. This is consistent. Do not ever shop on a weekend here. Lord help you if you do.

My go to Safeway store. There is one on the Mission thats according to Google Maps, is closer to where I live. But this Safeway store in Westlake is still the one that I go to because theres ample parking and the store is definitely bigger. I got familiarized with the layout thats why I know where to go. It also seems cleaner than the store in the Mission. Another thing that I like about the location of this store is behind it is Trader Joes and Cost Plus World Market that I also frequently visit. They always have coupons and if you create an account, you can download the app, set your store, download in store coupons and personalized coupons based on your past transactions at Safeway. I usually save between 25-50% using the coupons.

I usually shop in my neighborhood Safeway on Taraval, so I was surprised when visiting the Safeway in Westlake at how fantastic the customer service was. Because I was unfamiliar with the store, I had to ask three times where things were located or if the store carried gluten free. In all three cases I was shown to the item, not just pointed in the direction of. There is a sincerity in the people at Westlake that does not exist on Taraval. Westlake really understands that anyone can sell lettuce, not everyone can provide a good experience. Taraval could learn much from the people at Westlake Safeway. Good job and thank you!
