Blick Art Materials has an O.K. selection of art material (colors, drawing utensils, mesh, wire, paper, canvasses, artists tools etc. etc) ; but it also has easily the most passive and least forthcoming staff in a Bay Area store. Shop assistants are forever hauled up behind their counter. And it is astonishing, how little they know about pigments, surfaces, material qualities and preservation - all essential to artists before they get started. Art material is a specialty business. Comparable to music stores. People, who work in such places need to be highly knowledgeable. Not at Blicks. The 4 - 5 shop assistants are keeping their heads down, hiding behind the desk, no eye contact (hardly any sales person ever ventures into the store and actively helps a customer), and if asked for assistance, they act mopey. I have been there many times. Always the same. If I were Mr. and Mrs. Blick (they are real persons!) I would come down to Berkeley and check on the store. "When the cat is away, the mice will play ..." They are in business because there is no other art store around.

This small store has more inside than meets the eye. The staff is patient, kind and very interested in whatever question might come their way. Im no artist but sometimes when I visit here I wish I knew more about painting because their selection of brushes is fascinating. Or Im just easily amused. Dunno. The selection of paper, pens, pencils and other materials makes the wannabe artist in me swoon as well. So Im going to try and start doodling more so that I can put the goodies they offer to use one day.....so theres inspiration here too, I guess.....

Came here to buy certain supplies from a kit that my professor had pre-made from this location. Instead of showing me individually where all the things were from that specific kit, they kinda just told me where everything was and let me get it on my own. Couldnt find everything so I had to get some stuff online.

The best art store EVER! Its diverse enough to supply pros, teachers, students & anybody in between. Great place for unique gifts if you arent looking for yourself. It is a wonderland of fun. I wish i could shop there more often but have a hard time limiting my purchases so I limit my visits. Its great.

Its an all right art supply store, I give it a low rating because I had a very stressful experience getting mattes cut by them. All mistakes were fixed and apologized for, but 6 fairly easy cuts ended up taking an hour, and when I got home and measured none of the cuts were straight.

After searching for an art store through google maps I found this with a 30% off a single item offer attached. Cashier couldnt figure out how to put in the google offer code for the discount. So I didnt get to save on my new sketchbook but I did get what I was looking for.

Did not enjoy the store at all. No one was available to answer questions. Very little items stocked in the way of clay and linen. I still spent nearly $500 because I was so terribly desperate for materials and am rather new to the area. Definitely wont go again.

Its a great place to pick up supplies for my fashion illustration, and pattern drafting class. The parking lot is shared by other stores that are located in the building. Parking lot is very small, hence three stars, lack of parking is definitely inconvenient.

Im not knowledgeable about art techniques or supplies but I like to try and experiment. The staff is super friendly has always been really helpful for me I can give them an idea of what Im trying to do and they can kind of piece together what I need.

Its a little tricky to get here by car depending on which direction youre coming from but plenty of street parking if you dont want to deal with turning around. Great selection and friendly staff.

Perfectly serviceable, but Artist and Craftsman when possible. I do like Blicks deals on stretched canvases, as unlike many places, they still use a reasonably durable weight for a good price.
