Ahhhh Steve, One man army, no bs, he will not sell you anything you do not need. He is experienced, knowledgeable, and a genuine cyclist that is not concerned with upselling or even sales for that matter. He will help you if you need it but he lets "you do you" in his shop until such request is made. No elitist third wave hipster coffeeshop vibe and a LOT of products on hand from accessories to locks, and even bunnies. I have been coming to steve for many years (since 07) and I continue to go and recommend Open Road to all. Steve built me a wheel in 08 and i have abused this wheel far beyond any wheel i have ever abused and it is still kinda true (enough to ride without discomfort), even after HEAVY HEAVY abuse (fixed gear mtb wheel) im amazed it still spins at all, more or less, still shreds. Dont support nose-up elitist corporate shops, support small bike businesses. Dont drink the bike Kool-aid that is being served around here. There are a lot of shops popping up due to the increasing popularity of cycling, but Open Road has been around far longer than any craze. Also, Steve has a working dry cleaning rotating rack with all of his apparel on it for fun viewing. Really neato.

The place seems like a garage and the guy who owns it is pretty busy. But the guy was really mellow and he knows his stuff. Hes not gonna be stuck selling you crap, he goes right to the point if you need anything done or purchase anything. I went here with my crappy made in china freewheel asking if he could do anything about the clicking, I explained this to him and explained, "thats why I usually ride fixed because I hate the noise so much." He said, "let me see the wheel, do you know how to take it off? Heres a tool." I took it off and gave him the wheel. Within 3 minutes he gave it back...and it was silent. I have no clue what he did but he was a genius and is my savior. I asked him, "how did you make it so quiet?" "A little lithium grease," He answered. Though I have no clue how he inserted the lithium grease into the small crease of the freewheel, I was happy nonetheless. I asked, "how much will it be?" "Its fine," He said. Sometimes, I think this guy is not in it for the profit. He just loves working on bikes and getting people on. Tell me when and where do you see a guy like this. Hes an awesome guy. Thank you!

I brought in a bike I had purchased online to Steve to assemble it. I know nothing about bikes, but this guy has some really, really cool bikes in his shop, you can just tell he has a passion for what he does. He assembled my bike, ready to go the next day in perfect shape. Im new to the area and he took the time to express his concern for bikers on certain roads and gave me some great tips as a beginner rider. He runs his shop and interacts with customers in a way that very few business do- hes honest, does excellent work, and takes great care in valuing each customer who walks into the store. I would recommend him and his shop to anyone.

Steve is a great guy. Hes knowledgeable in basically every type of cycling sport known to man, and he is the fairest, most honest, trustworthy bike mechanic I have ever encountered. He was willing to strip a complete bike down to its frame and sell it to me at an excellent price when other shops would only sell the completes. For quick repairs, he has rarely charged me anything if it could be done while I wait. He was even willing to exchange some of my unused parts that I purchased from a different store when they would not take them back. I have frequented many bike shops across california, and his is by far the best.

The worst thing about going to Open Road is that Steve fixes my bike so thoroughly that I dont go back enough to enjoy his company. I guess the remedy is that I need to ride my bike more, and Im sure Steve would approve and take THAT as the highest compliment. Ive watched him match bike to rider with a sequence of questions, drawing out the answers, even pointing them to other shops if he thought that was in the customers best interest. Its more than honesty. He really cares about everyone who walks in, customer or not. And as you can see from most of the reviews, customers are loyal to him.

Like before, the clutter is not a huge problem. Steve is a great salesman and though I havent asked him for repairing, I truly believe hes excellent at his service! Great, patient, and calm guy! And not to mention his products! I needed pedals, a hand pump, tube pack, and a tube for future problems! Wow, I could get that for 100 bucks at some greedy bike shop, or get my things for 50 bucks and leaving with a smile on my face! One thing he also did was sell me a kids bike for my nephew for $20! One great guy he is huh?

This is maybe my second review that Ive written for a shop, but definitely worth it. I recently bought a rear tire in Northern CA, which became warped, within a few months, after a race, and a few leisurely rides. I brought it in today, very un-true (spokes loose all over), and the gentleman at the counter trued my bike within minutes and didnt charge me. Maybe it was an exceptional day for him and he was being nice, nevertheless theyve got my business from here on out.

Steve was really knowledgeable and answered all of my questions with attention, honesty and in a way accessible for someone like me with rusty understanding of bikes. I appreciated that his motive seemed to be honestly finding me the perfect bike rather than trying to upsell me. I just finished my first ride with the new bike and I am blown away! I will definitely stick with this shop for all of my cycling needs.

Steve youre awesome, and so is your commitment to customer satisfaction. The tandem seats are perfect and so is the rear axle and wheel you put together. Doing business with you is like having a trusted friend who owns a bike shop, and is always willing to put in the extra effort, make you feel special, and most importantly make sure the job is done right. Thank you, my friend.

Without question, Steve is the most knowledgeable and (furthermore) honest guy Ive run into in my life of roaming through and patronizing cycle shops. He is constantly willing to share his knowledge and goes to great lengths to solve even the smallest of problems or adjustments. He actually seems to enjoy helping his customers. Hes an amazing guy.

You dont go there because they have the flashiest new gear on display. Just like any other bike shop, anything can be quickly ordered. The reason why you go to Open Road is the owner, Steve. Hes the most trustworthy and knowledgeable cycling resource youll find. Once you tire of the up-sell and bad mechanics at other bike shops, pay him a visit.
