I used to live right by this supermarket and do my shopping here until the day when I noticed that the manager was eyeing me and following me with his stare as I left the checkout line to pick up something I had forgotten. I guess he considered this to be suspicious behavior, or perhaps it was my reusable shopping bag in which I had stuffed the items I was buying. In any case, I never came back, and thank God for Walmart Express and Trader Joes just down the street. I cant imagine how this place stays in business with lousy customer service and even lousier prices. As an aside here, I was chatting with the doorman in my building (hes black), and he was telling me about this awful supermarket in Lincoln Park where employees or managers follow you around if youre African American because theyre racist. I asked him if it was Big Apple Finer Foods on Clark street, and he said that it was. I told him not to worry, that they werent racist at all. They were Equal Opportunity jerks and behaved that way towards everyone they--wrongly--suspected of stealing their precious groceries. With so much competition just a short walk away -- stores that have a wide selection of quality food items and wonderful produce, not to mention excellent customer service and much lower prices, the mind boggles at why people would continue to patronize this place and why the manager/s would be so indifferent about losing business.

I just moved to the Lincoln Park area about one month ago and I am less than a block away from Big Apple Finer Foods. I was a little hesitant to go there after reading the reviews, however after going a few times I LOVE the place!! I dont mind if things are reduced because a label is nearing its expiration date. Frankly everything I have ever bought (even at those reduced rates) was super fresh and tasted just as good as any other grocery stores products. I was in a pinch the other night when I was making dinner and needed chicken. The other closest grocery store was out and I decided to try the butcher in the back of Big Apple. It was the best experience ever! I got stir-fry chicken pieces, perfect because it was cheaper than buying chicken breasts I would have to cut myself! And the low tax is a BIG plus!

We have shopped here for over 5 years, and I really appreciate the staff and convenience. But buyer beware, they have a no returns without receipt policy. Even on products with "Big Apple" right on it, like their bulk candy. We purchased some candy just a few hours prior, realized it had "Red 4" as an ingredient, which is technically illegal in the US. Its probably just a typo of "Red 40", but we wanted to be cautious. They refused our return, despite staff recognizing us every time we walk in, and as I mentioned, it said Big Apple right on the package. Disappointed and lost $10 for nothing.

Caution: Many products sold at this store are outdated. They put reduced and or outdated stickers on expired products. Many of the drink products have had their expiration dates completely removed. Also I have seen them pick up berries that were dropped and scattered all over the floor back into the package and on the shelf like nothing happened so be sure wash any produce you buy thoroughly. In addition many of the dairy products are often expired or very close to being outdated such as yogurt, cheese and milk to name a few.

This is a conveniently placed grocery store with a good variety of all types of food, despite its small size. This is great place to go when you need a small set of items that supplement your regular grocery shopping. The main downside of this place is the astronomical meat and dairy prices, which are sometimes more than double of what one would see at a larger grocery store (let alone a bulk store, like Costco). As a result, I do not recommend buying these types of items here.

Small family owned grocery store that carries EVERYTHING! Friendly staff, that really go out of their way to help you find what you need. They will even order items for you. Great hours and reasonable prices considering they are not buying in the kind of bulk the big box stores do.

Small Mom and Pop grocery store that weve been going to for decades. May not be as big and as much of a selection as the huge mega stores, but has character and always fresh foods. Their butcher shop in the back has the best quality meats. We still love going here!

Go there all the time for the butcher. Cant be beat for massive rib racks or just simple burgers when I feel like grilling. Dont buy the pre-packaged stuff from Walmart, talk to the guys who cut the meat and can take custom orders!

The meat department at this market in unbeatable. A separate meat counter is located in the back with high quality meats. All the employees are professional and helpful. A great neighborhood spot.

It is in a convenient location . But you pay for that. The prices are way higher than the chain supermarkets. You pay whole foods prices for jewel quality.

Decent neighborhood market. A little expensive for some products, but they have a great selection for the size of the space. Fresh produce.

The best quality meats I have found at a local butcher shop in the city. Similar caliber as Chop Shop or Paulina Meat Market.
