Cartel is a great local coffee shop in the heart of the business center of downtown Phoenix, where many of the other recent additions to the local coffee scene have feared to tread. Great care is obviously taken in sourcing and roasting the coffee. Their coffee is roasted locally by the experts at the Tempe store. They also just started brewing beer, a Desert Pale Ale and a Coffee Brown Ale, that are both excellent additions to the craft beer scene in Arizona. Come into the downtown Phoenix Cartel early in the morning on a weekday and its a great place to bump into members of the slowly blossoming tech and creative startup scene in Phoenix. There is an energy here around making a difference in the world through business that cant be found at Lux, Giant Coffee, Lola or Fair Trade.

Being cheeky, I told the barista in this serious coffee place that I was from Melbourne, and hadnt found good coffee in Phoenix yet. It wasnt strictly true, but a great conversation starter with baristas! He made me an excellent latte with pretty free pour art. The lady working the cash register had to explain some of the offerings for me. I forget now what a one and one is, it involves two shots, one as espresso and one as macchiato? She ran through the cookies, and this was a good idea. I chose an espresso, chocolate, cashew and sea salt cookie, so satisfying to this hungry traveller. Theres heaps of room at big tables here, they are expecting you to bring your laptop.

Good spot downtown, really nice people and great pastries. Properly pulled espresso and great options for a variety of drip coffees in various drip forms. NOT expensive for what they offer in both quality and choice. It is priced for their time and the quality of beans and roasting which are both very high. If you are used to paying $2 for coffee then steer clear and head to dunking donuts.....

The hours must be incorrect on Google. It says open at 7am. I got there at 7:15 and not a soul could be found. And no hours are posted on the storefront. It is really a shame, because I love trying out local coffee shops when I travel. I gave Cartel 2 stars simply because the interior looks really nice. Off to Starbucks I go :(

The baristas were really thorough about the quality of the pour over I ordered, which turned out extremely memorable! They were happy to explain each of their roasts and helped me pick out a bag of beans, which were also fantastic. I really enjoyed this storefront, and appreciated their overall attention to detail.

Nice staff, great pastries and okay coffee. I was in town on business and came here three times. Two of the three times I came, the coffee was great. It must depend on whos making the coffee that day! That being said, as a coffee drinker from Seattle, this was the best place I found downtown.

Cartel keeps things simple, and its all about the coffee. They dont offer a variety of flavorings to add to your coffee, but then again, you dont really need it. Their mochas and lattes are great, but I prefer the Gibraltar. Dont judge it for its size because its super powerful.

The baristas were great here! They made nice recommendations, the Cappuccino, Latte, and iced tea that we bought were all excellent. They are very quick with a high attention to detail. Its a small little shop with plenty of seating out in the stylish foyer.

Some of my favorite cold brew in town. Helpful and informative baristas when you have questions about their brewed goodness. Atmosphere is kind of austere, but in a cool "Im drinking coffee at a museum" sort of way. Five out of five beans, baby!

I cant really give this place 4 or 5 stars. Their Wi-Fi did not work. Tried many password they offered and still fail to connect. Left within 10 minutes without even has chance to try their coffee.
