I returned a couple items to this store and ended up with no funds on either merchandise cards we received. We returned a couple my sons baseball items and a pair of work out pants for myself. I did not have the receipt for my sons items because we had no intention on returning them until he was injured this past week. Although we had no issue returning (which I have never had an issue with previous returns) we discovered within 30 minutes that there was a zero balance on both merchandise cards. I immediately went back to the store and spoke with ADAM in customer service. He was originally the manager who approved the return 30 minutes prior. I was very nice and explained that when I checked the balance on each card it was zero. I asked if he could please issue two new cards for us and he said "absolutely not! I have no clue if you left and spent the money and came back to try and get two more cards!" he was very rude! I explained that I was just there in the past 30 minutes, that himself was the one who approved my returns and he could check online or call for the transaction history which would show that I hadnt spent anything (obviously because there was nothing on them to begin with). He wouldnt even respond to me except for saying "call customer service between 8 and 5pm tomorrow. They will be able to deal with your problem. There is nothing I can do in store." I was furious at this point with the lack of compassion and the amount of rudeness coming from this man. I was begging him to please call for transaction history so he could simply issue me a new card so I would not have to deal with calling the next day and waiting 3 to 5 business days before getting any return. He just refused and kept repeating himself over and over in a very rude tone to call customer service. My husband actually had to step in and tell him that he was not going to speak to his wife this way and that he worked in customer service and should do whatever he could to help me with my issue that him himself messed up on. I work in customer service. I have for 14 years and if I was this mans manager I would fire him on the spot. He has no business working with people what so ever. He was the rudest man I have ever dealt with. He had no respect for me as a woman or even a human being at this point. He would not even give me specific information on whom I should contact for my issue. He told me to look up customer service online and call between 8 to 5pm which in fact was incorrect because their call hours are from 7am to 12am! He should not be working with people, should definitely not be a manager and should be fired for the way he treated me. I am so disgusted at this mans actions. He is a disgrace to Academy and Academy shouldnt have someone like that representing them on a daily basis. I did call customer case and spoke with "JAI" (Jill) and she was wonderful! She took all my information down detail for detail. She gave me all the information I needed to check the status of my claim. She was very apologetic for a mans actions that she did not even know nor was it her obligation to apologize for him. I hope he gets fired honestly! I have never done a review but I felt the need to inform Academy of their horrible employee they hired as a Manager. I would recommend hiring a replacement for him.

* Edit - bumped review from 5 stars to 4 stars (felt like giving 3, but Ill have a big heart). Went back this evening to shop and buy a couple of items - clerk was tough on price matching. Paid full price on both items. They must have had a manager / staff meeting and now they are more strict on price matching?? Come on. These guys always price match online retailers and almost never question, plus they give additional 5% off on top of that. They have good stuff available, plenty of variety - always fully stocked and loaded with great selection. They always have plenty of staff available to assist and check-out. They always ask if anyone needs any help or has questions. They dont question much or give a hard time if we need to make returns or exchanges. Man, Academy has really stepped up their game from when I can last remember... Visiting them regularly has become an addiction, believe it or not... Keep up the great efforts, its making a difference to all of your customers.

The selection is always good at Academy. And their prices are reasonable too. However, why I gave this particular location 2 stars is the staff. The cashiers are probably the rudest folks I have ever met. Im in line with 2 other people and cashier turns her "line light" off. She services the two people in front of me and then tells me shes closed when she gets to me (and there is no one behind me). Really? So I go to the next station and literally the same thing happens (2 people in front me and she turns her light off as shes servicing). Luckily this cashier saw how upset I was getting and proceeded although grudgingly. Im not a person to judge people but you have to wonder if its because I look different than the people in front of me. Well I let the manager know what happened. I hope he addresses it. Ill also let customer relations folks at Academy HQ know. Apologies on the long review but it did get under my skin.

Their staff is helpful, but the store layout feels crowded and they dont have the best selection of products. Their prices also seem to be kind of high on athletic clothing (when comparing same brand products at other stores).

Typical Academy. Clean store, good prices, decent stuff. Youre not coming here for high end gear, but its not junk either. Think Walmart for sports but without the weird guy in spandex. You know what Im talking about.

They almost always have what Im looking for and at a decent price. Love their Magellan fishing shirts, perfect for Texas weather and their store brand shorts and t-shirts are really good quality and cheap!
