So I have been a commuter cyclist for 8 years. That means even getting groceries, laundry, going for coffee, etc. I averaged 70 miles a week one summer. My bike felt like a physical part of me. To go in to buy a bike at a store and have the guy tell me no when I wanted to try a bike out after I carefully examined them and deduced which was the best fit for my needs, offer meIan upright posture cruiser leisure-style bike (you know those like tricycle for adults style) (would you do that if I was a young male?), redirect me to a bike that was so small because I am a thin cyclist woman that my knees were by my ears, realize it wouldnt work, insist I dont now try the bike I know will fit me, put me on another bike which is such a poor fit I am actually hurt riding it, admits in surprise "oh, you were right" when I get on the bike i wanted to before this fiasco, and then after the sale in the uncomfortably unfriendly shop runs out after me and begs me to LET HIM START ME in first gear when he sees me leaving with my purchase, I feel condescended to and not understood. I have olympian level body fat, the lungs of an 18 year old male athlete and delineated calves. And it was me who put the chain back on the bike when he had me trying them out in the back and one slipped off, so it isnt like he could think I was totally unaccustomed to bikes. What.The.Hell. I have a friend who uses the shop and enjoys it. She respects the owner and gets bikes and parts for her enthusiast husbands bike because she is the family mechanic. When I described my experience, it turns out I was engaging with someone who is not the owner. So maybe you will get the older gentleman and have a better experience. Or maybe the younger man will have read this review and improved his customer service skills. Go to Reno Bike Project. They are welcoming, practical, encouraging, AND respectful.

...but then I realized they are incompetent too! I went in for constant flat tires and they showed me my plastic rim strip had a hole, so they replaced it. Ok, cool. But then they used a cheap rubber tape, which I later found out is supposed to be used for 60lbs of pressure or less. Less than two weeks later, same problem with the flats and a hole in the rim strip, so I walked my bike back to them when I blew out yet another tube. So I show up 1/2 hour before they are supposed to close and lo and behold they are closed. Or rather the front door was open, I walked in, pleaded for help and they told me very frankly to leave, the older guy told me he was leaving. And that was whom I have always presumed was the owner of the shop! AWESOME customer service! I ended up walking my bike home several miles. So thanks to the know-it-all, pompous [jerks] at CC who overcharge for repair services that most other bike shops will do for free.I only went to them b/c they were the closest but now I will definitely go out of my way to avoid them

My wife and I purchased two mountian bikes from a staffer at College Cyclery in 2001 after she took considerable time answering my questions about what the differences are at the different price levels. Because we had a good experience we bought two road bikes from the owner, Randy, a year later. He spent a lengthy time during two separate appointments fitting each of us to the bikes and a later follow up appointment with my wife to change the stem for a better fit when she found she had some back pain after long rides. These were $1200 bikes back then. Certainly not high end machines, but all of the fitting was included at no charge as with any road bikes they sell. After a collision with a large dog, I got to know the mechanic Chad when he built a custom replacement wheel for me. A couple of years later with a 1000 miles on the tires, I purchased two upgrade wheels, a new chain and upgrade cassette from Chad which he installed. I have never had a bad experience at the shop in many visits over many years.

Felt like a good place from the minute I walked in the door (not how I feel in most bike shops). The people were friendly and had a decent selection of good entry-level to mid-range bikes. If you are looking for Walmart prices this is not that kind of shop, but the models they have were, if anything, priced a bit on the lower side. The sales person spent a long time with me letting me ride about 8 bikes in total, never trying to sell me on anything. Answered all of my questions patiently and was a great sounding board for ideas. I left without buying anything only to return a couple hours later to buy a great Bianchi Volpe I rode earlier. She spent a good amount of time sizing the bike for me and now I have free tune-ups for a year. They also told me I can stop by anytime I am in the area if I need air for my tires (I work nearby). Great shopping experience.

These guys went above and beyond for me with their customer service in a way that only a local independent business would. I will always remember their helpfulness, patience, and friendliness. College Cyclery was recommended to me by a local and serious cyclist and I can see why, not only do they keep a great selection, but from the moment I walked my bike in the door to our many transactions later, the folks here have been excellent. We are fortunate to have a bike shop where people care about what they do and genuinely care about their customers. My experience here has reminded me of the importance and value of supporting these local businesses.

So... I dont know whether the employee was misunderstanding my question or what, but it was rather simple. I asked for an estimate to have headset races swapped between two forks. I specified that the forks were not attached to the bikes, so it would only take 5 minutes at most to do. The employee quoted me $30-$40 for the service?! This is simply astronomical! Until recently Ive been on the retail/service side of the industry for more than 18 years. Never in my life would I charge (or quote) a customer such a high price for something that requires less work than a flat fix. Too bad, as this was my first impression of the store.

I am DYI guy on my walgoose mt bike (frame and handle bars are original, Everything else is upgraded) Recently the rear derailleur went out of line, and after two days of adjusting couldnt find the sweet spot. These guys put it on a stand and after 10 min. had it shifting properly. And with buying a new tire (will mount myself) the service charge for adjusting the rear derailleur system was ???? Cheap. Bottom line: Great customer service, and for quick adjustments the service department rocks. Im not a pro, This shop is. You only cry once when paying for quality!

Just purchased a bike from here for my fiancee and had a fantastic experience. We went in knowing most of the information about the bike we wanted and the staff was very helpful in finding it. After I selected it, the staff spend almost an hour fitting the bike to her. Also, the price was very good. We got a Specialized Pitch Comp for the same price that Specialized sells directly, plus we got a fitting on top. If youre looking for a good, new bike, I highly recommend College Cyclery.
