I have shopped at this hardware store many times as our family likes to support the local stores. It has a great selection of goods and most of the employees have always been very friendly and helpful. The other day, however, I had an off experience. I went in to make a few copies of my housekeys. I needed 4 copies, 3 of the back door and 1 of the front door key. The person who made the keys did the opposite, and unfortunately, because you cant see the keys being made (which I also dont like) I didnt realize it until they were made. I told the cashier of the mistake, and he went and made the keys I needed. However, he wouldnt give me the extra keys to discard on my own terms. I was in a rush and had my 3 small kids in tow, so I ended up paying for their mistake instead of contesting it, but there was no way I was going to let them have copies of my house keys to "throw away"! Im a little put off. Not sure if I will be returning to the store.

I try to do the American thing and shop local. Ive gone out of my way countless times and probably pay more here even when theres big box a mile away. Went in with what should have been a simple issue over a defective $15 product and left never spending a cent there again. I dont know if it was a bad day or something but the staff was unhelpful and downright rude to my wife and I. The supposed "manager" actually said "whatever" to the two of us like we were children. If I were the owner, Id be embarrassed that my workers treat customers like that. Its really a shame too because its nice hardware store in a great neighborhood.

I purchased ice melt pellets that are to be used to break up ice dams on a roof. I asked the salesman if he knew anything about them and he said you toss them up on your roof and they melt ice and snow causing ice dams to break up. On his advice I decided to try them. They didnt work at all and in some instances made the dams worse. I took the pellets back to Swartz and asked for a store credit to put toward a roof rake. The salesman refused. I am a local customer and go to the store frequently. The pellets cost me $24. I will go to Home Depot which has better customer service and prices.

In a world of big box home improvement supply stores where to get around you need a compass, a good pair of hiking boots, and a Sherpa, this place is an oasis of simple and small, with knowledgeable people who are there to help you. Granted they dont have miles of lumber but they have most of what you need from a hardware store. Nothing but good experiences there, for years.

Knowledgeable, Helpful, Friendly, Always Fully Staffed. Parts, Paints, Screws, Electrical, Small Appliances, Garden Stuff, Candy, Soda, Plumbing, SOUP 2 NUTS this is the hot spot in Newton. I think they are the new breed of neighborhood hardware store. They are more then 100 years old, but yet they survive and thrive and provide a much needed service to the community.

Purchased a $600 MTD snow blower last year which died after the first use. Swartz wouldnt take the return telling me to call MTD. Their customer support is rubbish. Next time Ill buy from Home Depot as they take back returns for defective products. Also purchased a Weber grill from Swartz which thankfully worked but would buy from them again!

Harkens back to the hardware stores of times past. Great selection and a knowledgeable staff make it a great spot for the less than knowledgeable customer to get good answers.
