Downtown Silver Spring is pretty good but is overshadowed by DC. Many suburbs have trouble defining themselves as separate entities from their urban centers but Silver Spring has done a pretty good job with Downtown Silver Spring. The Downtown area has great public spaces, an ice rink, a very large movie theater and great housing. It is unfortunate however that once you get to the center of downtown, the local mom & pop stores are lost to the sea of more brand name stores such as Panera and Potbellys. This isnt necessarily a bad thing, but it isnt great either. Downtown Silver Spring has had a lot of trouble filling leases however, especially in the large indoor mall in the center of it. For a while, the mall was quite a ghost town although recently they have redone the mall so that hopefully will him. What Silver Spring really has going for it however is culture, the American Film Institute has a theater here (for some reason that continues to escape me) and they have regular events. The Blackbox (formerly owned by Roundhouse Theater) often has local shows and the Fillmore has good stuff as well.

I live in upper Northwest DC and really enjoy spending time in downtown Silver Spring. Plenty of free parking evenings and weekends, nice shops, ice cream, and restaurants. It has a nice fountain that the little kids can play in, a farmers market many weekends, and occasional live music. Foodwise, I particularly like McGintys Irish Pub and Masa, a Japanese hibachi restaurant up the stairs by the fountain. It also has a pavilion that doubles as an ice rink in the Winter. If you havent been before the Discovery Channel building lobby has some great displays.

Downtown Silver Spring is nice with multiple restaurant options and hotels available. Most of the restaurants are chains, but they are tasty and are well located in the middle of downtown. There is always a crowd which is nice, and it always feels safe anytime of the evening. There are county employees walking around as well as usually one or two police officers so you never feel threatened. Not a destination, but if you live in the area, it is a good place to hang out or grab dinner/coffee prior to a movie.

Oh yeah this is my favorite place for a bite and a drink when I am lazy to head to the DC. Many good restaurants and bars and all branded drinks; you can find everything you need. Just walk half a miles from the RED metro station ( Silver Spring station and bus bays) and grab a drink and enjoy the entire day. There are also a few good bars with happy hours which you can spend time. There are also movie theaters.

Great city shopping mall, independent business stores, major entertainment variety, Civic Center and relaxing courtyard. Also sponsored farmers market and other street vendors. Summer street and courtyard stage entertainment. Courtyard fall/winter ice skating rink. Parking garages and street parking. Excellent travel availability of public bus and train facility. Nearby 4+ hotels within short walking distances.

There is so much to do and see around here - 2 movie theatres (AFI Silver and Regal Majestic, McGintys Irish pub, plenty of great restaurants (both sit down and fast food), plus there is a great fountain and often outdoor entertainment/concerts during the summer. Its all within walking distance of the metro and there is plenty of garage parking too (most of which becomes free after 9 or 10 pm).

A little D.c. that offers everything from delicious food to great shopping mall and all metro accessible a great place to go for the weekend or just to hangout. There are shopping malls such as DSW, H&M, and food places galore. As well as a vintage movie theater. All easy to walk to and from. As well as a weekend market to purchase locally grown products.

There are so many places to eat, drink, and visit here. Keep your head on a swivel as it gets crowded. You dont want to miss anything. It seems theres always something going on too. A concert or DJ or something similar. You will be parking in a garage, so plan your visit ahead of time as parking structures arent easy to notice in normal traffic.

I love this area. Its metro and bus accessible, and it has a really wide range of offerings, from the market on Saturday mornings, to free concerts, free workouts, and the fun play and splash fountain. Most of the businesses are chains, but there are a few local businesses, and even the chains have a nice distribution re: cost and preferences.

Movies, Dave & Busters, Mall, Chipotle, Masa Sushi, A couple of decent watering holes, place for kids to play (fountains in the summer, ice skating in the winter)... Farmers markets, various festivals... It is its own little city to be honest. 1 stop shop for everything... And what you cant find there you can walk to relatively quickly.

Nice selection of retail and restaurants. Excellent movie theatre, AFI. Fabulous restaurants like Urban Butcher, 8407 Kitchen Bar, Oriental East (authentic dim sum) and Hen Quarter. Very good Farmers Market and Flea Market on Fenton Street. Year round challenging parking. Free parking on weekends at Wayne Ave Garage.

Much nicer and cleaner compared to when I was growing up in the area. A lot of new shops and restaurants. City place is now redone and renamed Ellsworth place. Although it looks a lot nicer the "anchor" stores inside the mall are suspect as they are discounter stores compared to the typical department store.

Great location for entertaining. There are many nice bars and resturants all within walking distance to inexpensive parking. They have free summer afternoon concerts here too. It would be nice if the movie theatre had reclining seats. But still a great location for a family outing or an evening with friends.

A fun place to go on the weekends and summer. Nice shops like burlington, whole foods, and marshalls are all at downtown silver spring. There is also a shopping mall named Ellsworth place that has even more stores. Nice places to walk around, ice skate, and even zumba classes! Its a great place to go.

Downtown Silver Spring has evolved so much in the last 15 years!! Now with the rehabilitation of the ol "City Place" mall it is getting even better!! Tons of options to dine out, plenty to do with the kids (Ice skating, color me mine, movies... ) My go to destination for family fun or date night!

I L❤VE this downtown experience! Silver Spring has a nice variety of restaurants and lots to do including shopping at the City Place mall, Dave & Busters, ice skating and a beautiful movie theater. I also like that you can choose from three grocery stores ... Whole Foods, Giant and Safeway.

Live in DC, visited DT Silver Springs to see IT in Imax Regal. It is a great clean newly built down town with nice outside sitting. But all chain restaurants, not very urban. In other words, it s great but brings nothing new to the table. I would not avoid but i would not visit either.

Theres always lots to do here. If you want to see a film there is either the Majestic for wide releases or AFI Silver for Indie and art house films. There is a new Dave and Busters for a night of games and good food, as well as a large selection of fine dining restaurants in the area.

Downtown Silver Spring is very energetic and there are a lot of restaurants and clothing stores within walking distance; on the other hand, traffic and parking can be a pain - especially during the weekdays. On weekends parking in the garage is usually free, so that helps a bit.
