I have been to many REI stores in the past and have never had a bad experience prior to this one. I usually go out of my way to shop at REI because of their values and desire to minimize environmental impact. However, my most recent experience has made me rethink where I would like to spend my money. I went into the Columbia, MD store today to buy a pair of hiking boots. The shoe salesman was extremely helpful and assisted with all of my needs. I could not have been happier with the service he provided toward selection of the right pair of hiking boots. However, I became slightly annoyed with being asked repeatedly to sign up for the REI membership program. Although I was slightly annoyed at this point, the superb job this salesman had done up to this point overshadowed his pestering. I settled on a pair of boots and proceeded to the checkout line. The checkout line was were my annoyance transformed into a distaste for REI in general. At the checkout line I was pestered even further about joining the REI membership program. The tone used by the cashier was a condescending one and at one point, the cashier said "What, you dont like money or something?" I feel like the pushy and rude attitude of this cashier was unprofessional and unacceptable. I still purchased the boots because I was already in the checkout line and had invested time working with the shoe salesman. However, I have no intention whatsoever up stepping foot in this REI again. Also, I will be hesitant to step into any other REI stores in the future. I cannot in good conscience recommend this store to anyone.

Went to have my bike serviced for the first time in 10 years. I called ahead to check the prices, was well informed and brought my bike in promptly. I was greeted, ironically, by the man [Matt] i talked to on the phone, who guided me to meet the technician who would service my bike. The technician did a quick once over and went through what i thought needed to be done and what he thought could use some work. I wasnt pressured into anything and was well informed throughout the conversation. I informed him which things I found have been giving me some issues and we collaborated on a plan which was then quoted appropriately. He was quick and thorough with his work. The area didnt seem too busy and found i was able to pick up my bike in less than 3 hours. Took it for a test spin in the parking lot and rides as well as when i first bought it! Thanks for doing such a fantastic job for a fair price! Would 100% recommend to anyone needing work done on their bicycle!

To Whom It May Concern: I wanted to write this appreciative/positive review for Joe H (Store Manager) at the Columbia, Maryland store. He offers an extremely positive experience to his customers. I visited the store on March 5th, 2016 to inquire regarding an item that I bought on March 3rd, and he promptly offered me solutions. To him, I am one out of a thousand customers. But from the customer’s perspective, there is nothing that is more important than a positive shopping experience at REI. Again, thanks for providing an extremely friendly shopping experience, by having quality staff, and an overall great shopping/learning environment. Sincerely, Ray, whose whole family shops at REI.

I joined the Co-Op at the Timonium location several years ago when making a larger purchase of a few pairs of hiking boots and some items of clothing. Just today (2 years later, mind you) I finally took advantage of the benefits of the co-op. They made it very easy to exchange one pair boots I bought originally since they were a tad snug and painful on longer excursions. Highly recommend utilizing the co-op! They also have a really great rental program for select higher priced items (tents, etc) that you might use too infrequently to warrant purchase.

REI is THE store for the outdoor enthusiast, actually employing outdoor enthusiasts who (mostly) know what theyre talking about. Youll find clothing, gear, and accessories for hiking, biking, canoeing/kayaking, paddleboarding, skiing, and running. Excellent return policy. Great selection, great sales, reasonable prices. Become a member and earn dividends on the money you spend, and become eligible for special offers. Huge store, great staff. Highly recommended.

Sales help is usually rude and unprofessional. While I was waiting to be helped and holding a sample shoe, the staff asked me to give them the shoe to show to another customer, not even bothering to ask if I wanted help. The manager was no better, just thanking me for letting her know, not offering to help or apologizing. The staff barely acknowledge customers and rarely if ever ask if you need help, even when the store is half empty, which it usually is.

I always have good experiences at REI, and this store is no exception. While understanding that the prices are pretty high, youre paying for the salespeoples expertise. I went in to buy some hiking shoes, and an employee did a great job of measuring my feet, and really helping me get what was best for me (theyre not paid on commission). If you dont know what youre getting and need profession advice, Id definitely come here.

I hate REI - because I can never not browse all the goodies!!! Amazing amount of great gear and accessories. This visit was for an REI gift card, but I saw this and grabbed that and so pleased with the quality and price. Staff was super helpful and even put my goodies in a box for shipping instead of a regular shopping bag. Plenty of parking despite the holidaze - very nice visit.

I had exchanged insoles (superfeet brand) twice because I kept getting the wrong ones. If you have flat feet, you should be getting ones with low profile, not highs. Anyways, they were really nice about the exchange and allowed it once again.. I would like to thank the manager specifically for allowing a double exchange. Check out this place. They have great customer service!

I love this store, they have everything i have ever needed from them. I enjoy the high quality stuff they have in the store and can shop and be assured that its going to last and if i dont like it, well i just return it. service is very professional and helpful, they know everything they need to about outdoors stuff. loses a star because of the lack of attic sales.

I brought my new skis in and asked for them to be mounted at a certain spot. When I picked them up, they were not mounted at that spot. They gave me my money back, plugged up the holes they made, remounted the skis, and gave me a $25 gift card for messing up. Still, you cant be making that mistake. I wouldnt take my ski gear here.

I went to the store for the grand opening. Every staff person I talked to was helpful and friendly. This store somehow seems a little smaller than some of the other stores Ive been in, but the selection of merchandise was great and the store was very well stocked and was clean as well. Im so happy Columbia finally has an REI!!!!
