I went in to the fly shop after just moving to the State and having heard about the Gunpowder river being close enough for me to fish in the evenings after work. The store owner took the time to go over the fly’s that have been working well as well as pointing out spots on the map that they recommend to fish given the current conditions as well as reports for the fisherman out on the river concerning were people were swimming. As I was finishing up my perches of the licenses and a few of the fly’s that were doing well the owner asked about the wading boots that I had with me and when he found out that I had felt soled he kindly informed me that they were not allowed in the stat of Md and offered me a loaner pair of boots for the day. I cannot tell you how happy I was with the customer service of the Backwater Angler fly shop, it is good to know that there are still a few people out there that are willing to take the time to pass on good information and not just worried about the bottom line!!!! Thank you very much for all that you do.

I normally dont write reviews; in fact, I rarely do. This place, however, gave me such a good experience that I thought to leave one. Im a normal fisherman and I am just getting into fly fishing, so I dont know to much about it; however, Theo (I hope i spelled his name right) helped me a lot at this shop. He showed me the best places to fish at the gunpowder and he showed me a video to give me a better visual of it.He told me about different waders, perks of different waders, how to fix waders, and etc, He also gave me a run down of the flies to use at this time of year and the mechanics of the flies. He was really patient with all my noob questions and gave me so many good tips. I would definitely recommencement this place to new and old fly fisherman alike.

I am new to fly fishing and fly tying so my son and I decided to check out the shops in the Baltimore area. Though I was dissapointed that this store did not sell fly tying materials they more than made up for it in knolegde and customer service. they even wrote down the flys used in the Gun Powder so I knew which fly to work on. I felt bad that i did not buy anything. That did not seem to bother them! I would say if you do not check out this store you are making a mistake. Angelo Bavetta

Backwater Angler, to me, sets the bar when it comes to flyshops and outfitters. The experience and vast knowledge base coupled with the willingness to educate others is what sets this shop apart. Theo, the Riverkeeper, welcomes all. His extensive time on this river and surrounding areas makes him able to help make even the most seasoned fisherman a better angler. I learn something new every time I walk thru those doors.I highly recommend coming in and spending some time there.

Backwater is great! They have a great website that is loaded with years of fishing reports! It is a great place to learn about the Gunpowder! They will also take the time to talk to you if you stop by the store!

This place is great. I wish I could spend hours there talking to Theo. He knows the river like no other... and cares for it like no other.

A small shop that has just what you need (experienced to beginner), to hit the water. I highly recommend Theaux and his staff.
