The world would be a better place if every city had a Rebuidling Exchange of their own. My own home and office is replete with material that they salvaged, sold to me at a lower price that I could have found for comparable material elsewhere, and then provided expert advice on how to incorporate said material into whatever project Ive used it for. More than likely, at each visit I was helped by someone in their training program who was learning a new skill that will likely be a benefit to them in their life down the road. To summarize, The Rebuilding Exchange: Provides materials one cant find anywhere else at lower prices than expected. Ensures that those materials are used instead of sent to the landfill. Has a staff that can help you think about how to approach your next DIY project. Helps the community by training people who need the training. Is my favorite place to shop in Chicago.

I like this place but this is my problem w them. I had several nice windows and an exterior door that I wanted to bring them and so I asked them if could get a store credit or trade my door for one of theirs bc I need it to swing the opposite way. They said no, so youre telling me they want me to give them my stuff for free so they can turn around and sell it for a profit and they wont even give me a store credit for the other free stuff they have? My windows and door will going to habitat for humanity instead. If Im going to donate something its not for some guy to make a profit, its going to help people.

The Rebuilding Exchange is one of my favorite places to go. Im an architect and active DIY-er and it always gets me inspired. Ive taken a couple classes there- the Make-It Take-It Mirror as well as Intro Woodshop and I built a nice bar for my apartment in their shop. The staff is incredibly helpful and knowledgeable, and I consult them on my projects all the time. I love that they can tell you the stories behind the salvaged wood, doors, windows, and other interesting pieces. Its like a more accessible Salvage One- youll always find cool projects happening there.

Great place, but you pay the price. Its very pricey. You can find the same quality reclaimed materials at other places in the area for a lot less money. They also arent very grateful for their donations. I have a 3 year old gazebo that Im removing, thought Id give it to them instead of letting my contractor pocket the profits from it (I dont have anyway to sell it really). They wanted a donation to come pick it up. The $3000 gazebo was going to be their donation.

I was impressed by the variety of materials they have for older homes. Everything is neatly organized and they are willing to help you move things around to get to what you want. I was able to find two solid wood doors at a great price. There staff is also very knowledgable if you have a question about do it yourself projects. I plan on attending one of there workshops in the near future.

The city needs more places like this! Fix up your home or rental building with nice used materials and fixtures without having to spend too much on cheap Home Despot junk. Great source for old timbers and boards for projects. They even have a bin of free small cutoff boards. Theyre always nice and helpful. PS: the person who left that lone 1-star review sounds psychotic.

Criminal owners have no limits. The Zelechowskis intertwine charity, with corruption and family lawyers to cheat the system. Hope their whole scam goes belly up. Will be recommending a tax review to IRS, and contacting a few other government agencies. Lets see if they move again trying to get away from their fraudulent ways.

This place is a great resource for DIYers, new homeowners and anyone looking to recycle old home materials. A lot of the building materials are very dated and require someone with a talent for upcycling but the reclaimed lumber is cheaper than the big box store and perfect for DIY furniture/accent pieces.

Ive found some great pieces over the years – solid wood doors, nice french doors, window hardware, and most recently a great set of kitchen cabinets for my basement workroom. Watch for their monthly specials – you can save a boatload of $$! Bonus: The staff is friendly and very helpful!

The ReBuilding Exchange is the best place to drop off our clients recyclable building materials or salvageable building products. Its also a a great place to stop in for a wood shop class and learn how to repurpose what you own.

For me, the best thing about this place is the old growth wood, but they will occasionally have other gems. The old doors and fixtures are great if thats what you need. They are also very helpful and nice.

Best place in the city to grab that reclaim lumber, building supplies and creative reuse. They also host seminars and woodshop classes. The new retail warehouse is a good look for sure.

This place is pretty cool. Expansive. You really need to know what youre looking for and there are great finds if youre willing to spend the time. Fair pricing generally.

Kinda cool, not full designer prices like Salvage One or Urban Remains. They have good community involvement and project classes.

Came in to look for a few things, but couldnt find staff to ask questions. Would love to take a class here, though.
