Although I don’t usually write reviews, I feel like such a review is warranted based on my recent experiences with Pep Boys in Hamden, CT. Particularly my experiences with Larry Ouellette. Ever since I came to Larry a few years ago due to an issue I was having with my tires, I knew based upon his services to me that day that I could trust him with any other issues that may arise with my vehicle. Fast-forward a few years later, I still have the same car but this time I have different issues: a broken axle and a loose axle. Larry explained to me the dangers associated with driving a car with a broken axle and gave me a very comprehensive explanation of how an axle functions, as well as the processes associated with the repairs. Initially, I was very reluctant to proceed with the repairs due to them being so costly and out of my budget. But Larry assured me that I would be getting a beneficial deal, one that includes a lifetime warranty, and even encouraged me to seek a second opinion if necessary. After a few days of receiving numerous second opinions and finding the money to pay for the repairs, I realized I would inevitably return to Larry. Right now, I am waiting for my car to be repaired but I feel rest-assured that my car is in good hands and being repaired at a fair price compared to other options. It is very satisfying to know that thanks to Larry’s honesty and professional candor, I can continue to rely on him at the Pep Boys in Hamden for any and all of my future vehicle needs. I hope others share the same experience. Let me begin by saying that I am very skeptical when it comes to me dealing with any issues regarding repairing my car. I have had previous experiences with dealers always ripping me off and charging unnecessary fees for services that I would subsequently learn were needless. Due to this stigma, I have always been very reluctant and uncertain to trust anybody with the handling of my cars maintenance. There came a point in time when I needed new wipers, and I couldn’t stall on purchasing them any longer, however, I was uncertain as to whether or not I was getting a fair price. I came to pep boys, from there I met Larry Ouellette. Larry seemed to understand my skepticism, but in a very caring and professional manner. He also reassured me that I would be satisfied with the purchase and that I would come back and thank him.. He was right. I came back a month later, not to thank him, but because my car was having troubles and I was afraid there was an issue with my antilock brake system. I was already pessimistic and expecting to have to pay a substantial amount of money and also assumed that due to my lack of knowledge and inexperience when it comes to automobiles, I would have been milked for more money. Upon entering, I spoke with Larry and he could tell I was very tense and anxious, but he calmed me down and reassured me that he only wants to work on my best interests. Larry knows how important it is to have what is called a “bed-side manner,” which is pretty much the compassionate demeanor a doctor must exude while interacting with a patient. Larry does this very well, and because of that I confided in him. After inspecting my car free of charge, he informed me that I had a defective tire that was most likely sold to me that way and not to worry. Upon hearing this, I regretted ever being skeptical of somebody like him. And due to my amazing two experiences with Larry I can say with certainty that I am pleased to know I have Pep Boys in Hamden to take care of all my cars services and needs. But most important, I know I have Larry who will always trustingly be assistive to me. Larry exemplifies the type of professional that every car owner wants, needs, and deserves. Thankfully, I am lucky to have discovered Larry, because I can now have peace of mind if I ever encounter any new issues with my car, I have somebody reliable and professional that I can depend upon. I recommend him to anybody and everybody.

They do everything for less for a reason. Customer service is non-existent. If you must go there, know what youre looking for, find it yourself and get out of there. Im surprised the people at the checkout counter know what to do. I have rented tools there, but I wait longer to see someone then to actually check out. If you need exhaust work done go to Yankee Discount Muffler in Bridgeport. Talk to Pete he really will hook you up. And I dont mean ghetto hook you up, I mean genuine customer comes first. But I digress, Pepboys in Hamden should be bought by someone who has a passion for things automotive, all the poor saps that work there should go back to school and do something else in life. Humanity Fail. Update: Why do I try to give them the benefit of the doubt? I went in this morning to find a universal K&N filter. I couldnt find what I was looking for on the shelf so I crossed my fingers and went to the service desk. The person there couldnt understand I was looking for a universal filter for a custom intake setup. I had to look a part number up on my phone and magically it "was a hit." The remark that got me was "well, I learned something today, I didnt even know they made universal filters." Extra icing on the cake: 27% cheaper on Amazon, it will be at my door tomorrow. Again, go anywhere else if at all possible, if not, know what youre looking for, get in and get out.

I bought new wheels and tires to my car, so I drove to Pep Boys to have them rotated and balanced. Also, I wanted to have the coolant system washed and refilled. I was waiting 2 hours for the service to be done, which is fine, but then came the problems. I drove home (less than 3 miles away) and in the garage I noticed a half-inch diameter hit on my brand new wheel and for some reason the engine ventilator did not stop either. I called them because of my wheel and I was told to go back. On the way back the water temperature suddenly started increasing and by the time I reached the service, there was no more coolant liquid in the system. I was lucky I got there before it reached the red zone. Apparently, they "did not know" how to tighten or reattach a hose, so the coolant was leaking. Another hour and they found the problem, fixed it, refilled the system and it has been fine since then, except that everything is covered with coolant under the hood.. About the hit on my wheel they said I hit a curb !!!, so it is not their fault and on the highway, the car is vibrating, so the wheel rotation did not turn out to be good either. Stress, 200 bucks, 4 hours, a flawed wheel, vibrating car and a mess under the hood. Thanks Pep boys, never again...

I dont usually take the time to do this, but I have to this time, to counteract the bad reviews. I had a slow leak in my tire for months and many other tire places are closed by the time I get off work. One auto repair/tire store told me over the phone that Id need a new tire, and estimated it would cost $70 installed. I called first and Pep Boys in Hamden CT said they would look at it first to see if it was repairable. I saw mixed reviews here on Google so arrived at the store a little cautious. Everyone I interacted with was super professional and friendly; they got my car in and up immediately on a rainy Monday night, so there was no waiting for them to look at it. I sat and was able to get work done on my laptop with the free wifi in the waiting room. After a short wait for diagnosis, they told me that they discovered tire valve stem was broken, so they replaced it and when I said how much, they said it was FREE. I did not owe them a penny! I have never been to this store before but Ill be back. I received amazing customer service, especially from Juan, the man at the front counter and two of the other mechanics were super nice to me, too. I wish I had got their names.
