I made a quick trip - 5 hours one way - to Segway of Oakland last Tuesday. Steve Steinberg knew I wanted to convert my i180 into an XT, but I didnt give him much notice that I was going to come to his place to have him do the switcheroo - I called him late the day before. I figgered Id get away from the smoke from all these California lightening fires and get my new wheels. This wasnt my first visit to Steve and Segway of Oakland. He very generously donated a Segway to me to use at a big flooring convention in January 2007. Those 4 days in Las Vegas were such a huge thrill and a real eye-opener to what the quality of my life could be like. I have late stage emphysema, wear oxygen 24/7 and cant walk very far or do much physical activity. The Segway opened up new doors for me and brought me out of a big depression. I ended up buying the same machine, but Steve stepped up again and took nearly all the used parts off the thing and gave me all new. I think the only used items when he was done were the tires and wheels, the platform and batteries. The price was very good - I see what these things go for used. And he tossed in a nice set of bags. This trip was spur of the moment, but Steve wasnt phased a bit. Seems like everywhere I go these days, I have to make an appointment. Not with Steve though. He and his able assistant, Zack, had the old fenders and wheels off and the new fenders, hub adapters and them big ol knobby AT tires and shiny new wheels mounted in no time. Again, the price was very good and the service was exceptional - and always very friendly for city folks (heck, for any folks). I had to say thank you to Steve and his associates for making me enjoy doing business with them. And especially for helping to make the little bit of time I got left so much fun. The only problem with this organization is that their week-end tours regularly operate on the sidewalk along Lakeshore Avenue by Lake Merritt. These sidewalks can be very congested just with foot-traffic, and are especially popular with the elderly, persons with disabilities, young children and dogs. While all coexist relatively well, adding silent, motorized vehicles in the hands of inexperienced operators is dangerous. As a pedestrian, I need to be on my toes as children and dogs can move suddenly and in unexpected directions. Making the required evasive adjustment as a pedestrian is generally not a problem (though I see collisions), safely making the same sort of reaction for an inexperienced operator of a motorized vehicle is not nearly so easy. Ive almost been struck by tour riders twice, and had them startle me from behind several times, including today. I would give them a higher rating if they demonstrated serious concern for the safety both of their customers and other pedestrians

A little sketchy neighborhood to start, but we had a great time seeing the sights in Oakland. I had previously thought of Oakland as a plain congested city, but my opinion is now very different. We toured around lake Merritt, China town, Jack London square, and a nice park, none of which I knew existed. Our guides were great and very patient with our training, and the price was right. We will be back.

I booked a last minute Lake Merrit Tour for my family. We had never been to Oakland or ridden Segways before .. We were pleasantly surprised at how beautiful Oakland is....especially Lake Merritt . The Segways were such fun for us. Our tour guide Alex was very helpful . ... "Like your ride? Tip your guide!" ... So We did! We cant wait to do it again!.

We had a great time with Bob going around Lake Merritt. The Segway was easier to ride than anticipated and we had a blast learning. The only issue we had was in our payment. It took a few months to get a refund, but in the end, they made it right and took care of us. Go on a tour and have fun!

never have any dealings with these people if you can possibly avoid it. especially avoid rich jr. they are very shady, refuse to take responsibility for their mistakes, and basically make you want to pull your hair out. avoid this hassle.
