The care of small animals at the Barre (VT) Petco is still appalling. I was there last week and noticed that only one baby ferret remained from a group that had, as all ferrets do, previously slept all cuddled up together. The last one, however, didnt even have a tiny fuzzy blanket to cuddle with, so I spoke to the manager who assurred me that new ferrets were coming the next day. For the interim, I asked if I could purchase a couple of fuzzy things for the lone ferret to cuddle with - Id buy two so that one could be washed if the other became soiled. The manager said certainly, and began to ring the items up, but then apparently realized the absurdity of the situation and paid for them with the stores funds. Nice of her, but the situation should never have even occurred - a manager who actually cares about animals would have thought of giving the ferret something to cuddle without needing my input. A sales clerk happened to be present and Im quite certain that he heard the entire conversation. The manager also interjected that the cages were cleaned on schedule - ferrets on Friday, as I had previously spoken with her about the fact that I so often saw feces in the food dishes. Its apparently just fine with her if animals to eat filth as long as she follows a schedule. Managing the sale of dry goods on a schedule is just fine, but no creature should have to live like this! So just imagine how angry I was when I went into the store today only to find that the one tiny ferret was still all alone with nothing to cuddle, AND one of the fuzzy items purchased for him/her a week ago was sitting on TOP of the cage!!! It was all nice and clean and folded - like it might never have even been used! The cage had at least been cleaned (today is Friday), but apparently the staff had not been told what the fuzzy item was for, so it was left sitting there while the ferret slept, cold and alone. Accordingly, I found a salesclerk (who just happened to be the same guy who had listened to my conversation with the manager last week), and I asked him why the ferret was still all alone without even the fuzzy item to cuddle? He said that he knew nothing about it and he very clearly didnt care. I asked for the manager, but he said that she wouldnt be in until tomorrow and that there was no way to contact her, nor was there anyone else to contact. I asked him if he would please give the ferret the fuzzy item to cuddle with, but he said, nope, he cant do that without the managers approval. As he had presumably heard my conversation with her about this very issue just one week prior, I was left wondering if perhaps it is the managers usual practice to placate customers by saying things that she doesnt mean just to shut them up. Clearly she hadnt bothered to make the staff aware of the situation, and even the sales clerk who had been present while we spoke thought that he needed her approval to actually do what she had assured me would be done. The "care" that these animals receive is just horrible, and the staff clearly couldnt "care" any less. I find this situation just heartbreaking. It is unlikely that I will ever buy anything more at Petco, however, I will continue to stop in to check on the animals as often as I can. Petco apparently cant be bothered to hire people who actually give a damn about the well-being of the creatures who rely on them, and whose care has been entrusted to them.

I just got off the phone with a man at Petco, The one in Barre, Vermont. The guy that I usually deal with wasnt there when my son went in to purchase two Female Mollies. I asked my son to get to female mollies because we have one big male Molly.. Weve had problems with not enough females per one aggressive Male Mollie. We have a very aggressive mail Miley in our big 40 gallon tank and wanted to get a couple females. So, the guy at the store said that he was not sure of the difference between a male and a female but, I think these are both females, and gives it to my son. He proceeds to say I think these are two female. When I got home I saw that one was a male and one was female. So, obviously Im going to call the store back and asked him to take that male back so it doesnt get killed.when I did speak to this man he said that I gave your son to male mollies. But in the same breath said he didnt know the difference. So, I have to take the male back so we can get a female. He then proceeds to say to me that well, you better have the receipt. Weve had this problem before with Casey. He lmade a mistake and gave is a male and one female instead oftwo females. He graciously took that male back and gave us another female. Weve never had a problem with Casey. He is very good at his job, very polite and gracious. Thats how a store should be run. its called great customer service. So, I do not recommend that you go to the store and deal with someone that says to you, they dont know what theyre doing but yet, they give you something theyre not sure of. We go to them for help and expect them to know their job. When you have a tank, its complicated with different fish and diseases and so much more. This person did not even apologize or even mention that he couldve possibly made a mistake. Seeing he said in the very beginning of the conversation that he was not sureif they were both females, youd think hed be like no problem, Im sorry bring it back, but sadly, no! My son is young and he does not know the difference. We go there and expect that they know what theyre doing. This particular store has made mistakes before with size, but yet, we still go there and give them the benefit of the doubt. We would expect the same of them. Beware!

They are cruel and borderline abusive to their betta fish. I have always had betta fish for the last 15 years. I love those little guys. First thing you see when you walk into this store are tons of betta fish. They are crammed into tiny cups that are always disgusting. Their water is brown tinted and they can barely swim. I know they can have bigger cups, since Petsmart has them in bigger cups, and theyre clean. I worship the water my two babies swim in, and to see this breaks my heart. I asked the manager to please clean their cups and feed them. Several where eating their own poop. I was told that they like it like that. I asked how they would like living like that. I was then told I didnt know anything about betta fish and they walked away. I know a lot about bettas since they are my world. I treat mine like my children, I hate going in their but I have to to get my fish the stuff they need to live happy clean, well fed lives.
