The river itself is beautiful; however, the customer service at Caney Fork Outdoors was horrible. I had reserved several canoes for a large group about a week and a half prior to our trip. The woman who Im assuming owns the business called to confirm the reservation two days prior to our trip as well as to let me know the generator schedule. I chose our put in time and the woman asked me in a very rude tone if I would still need all of the canoes. When I said yes, she responded with "Im giving you a chance to cancel right now", again in a rude tone. Seeing as I am one person and cannot speak for an entire group, I again said "yes, I still need them all." The morning of the trip, one couple had to cancel. As we were signing in, I let the woman know they would not need to drive down a canoe as one group did not show. At this point she proceeded to yell at me that this was the reason why she calls to confirm and she had been turning people away losing business because of this. I told her I didnt mind paying for the unused canoe, I was just informing her so her men didnt waste their time driving it down to the water. We also had a couple of kayakers in our group who had brought their own kayaks. They asked the woman who checked us in if they needed to do anything specific as most companies charge for the shuttle/transportation of the kayaks. She said she needed nothing from them and they could go. Once we reached the end of our trip and were ready to load ourselves and kayaks we were informed very rudely from a teenage boy working for them that they do not transport kayaks. He proceeded to argue with a girl in our group until the woman who checked us in drove down in a van. He told my friend to ask the woman what she could do. When my friend spoke with the woman she was told that she could either bring her car down to the pick up area to get her kayak or she could pay $10 for the transportation. That would have been fine had she said it earlier when we asked. I will never use this company again. I suggest taking your business elsewhere.

We recently did our first float down the Caney we own equipment but took a couple with us that did not. So we decided on here to rent their kayaks for the day. Ill keep this brief and note why I will take my business somewhere else next time. The good. The place looks neat and well kept. Price for the rentals was on par with everyone else. The equipment we rented was in good condition, life jackets looked like they had been around awhile but had no damage other than some color fade. The staff was helpful and knowledgeable. Joel was wonderful, very helpful and willing to answer our questions, forgiving and kind even when we got back a little late. His information was spot on when we went down the river from landmarks, flow, to how long it would take. But there is an exception to the staff.... The bad. Janice, Janice is the bad all of it.... I never directly pick on someone in a review but I must this time. Ive never met anyone as rude as Janice ever. Her short tempered outburst almost made us not do our trip down the river. I felt like a scolded child as we asked her questions. One example of many: we asked if there was a map, after being told by another staff member that she had maps of the river in the store, and received "THERE IS NO MAP!" , "So what is the next stop after Happy Hallow?", "THERE IS NO MAP! ...no map!". Finally Joel jumped in and gave us the info we needed, great guy cant express that enough. How do they stay in business with someone treating customers like this? I will not take my money here just to be treated like a child that just broke out a window. How others have given good reviews of her I have no idea. Conclusion If Janice wasnt there I would recommend this outfitter with 5 stars. However she is there, and the only reason I didnt give them one star is because everyone else did a good job. But everyone else doesnt make up for how badly she treated us. I recommend using someone else unless you like being scolded and spoken down to by a complete stranger.

I first met Janice and the crew at Caney Fork Outdoors/Caney Fork River Runners while I volunteered on a "clean the Caney" river cleanup the week before last. They gave me a free kayak to help a river conservancy group clean up any trash and debris we could find on a float down the river. We had a good day and cleaned up a little bit. Overall, the Caney Fork river was pretty clean on the section that we ran. Even though I only had a small pile of old grocery bags and fishing line, they still didnt charge for my kayak. So the next week, I brought my son back to kayak on the 4th of July. It was a madhouse with all of the people lining up for rentals, but Janice hadnt lost my reservation, written in her notebook. The entire operation is run by her and her family - three generations of Tennesseans taking care of tourists from all over, all summer and winter. They seem to take care of hundreds of people a day some times. Shes even had the Gore family rent from her and shell tell you about it if you ask her. Shes practically a local historian and is happy to tell people about the area. Even though a couple dozen people had signed up for the 9am group and were showing up all at the same time, everyone on the list got their canoes or kayaks and I didnt hear a complaint the entire day from any other customers. There was hot food waiting for us and tons of memorabilia to purchase at the Caney Fork Outdoors store when our 4 hour trip was over, all served up by the family. We had a great time on the river, my son and I, and we will definitely be back again next time.

Joel and Janis were some of the first people we met that introduced us to kayaking aprox 2 years ago. My boy had an interest in kayaking and they took a personal interest in him and helped him make a dream come true. I really appreciate the interest and the care they have for the youth in this sport. As a family we have now come to love the sport and have had many joyful experiences that we would have never had! We stopped by the other day to visit with them and they are still doing all they can to help others enjoy kayaking! Joel and Janis really care about those they associate with and would recommend anyone who has an interest in kayaking to check them out! They are Fine People!

The staff was very rude to us. We had called ahead to confirm what time we had to be off the water and received 2 different answers. One person said 5 the other person said what their website had written which was you pick what time you want to be off. After we drove 2 hours to get there we found out that the number on their website was for the convenience store next door and that were in fact not allowed to answer any questions pertaining to the canoe rental company, and as it turned out they were the ones who told us that we could pick what time we get off of the water. In the future when we float on the caney fork river we will not be using this companies services.
