Cool selection, but dont bother Bob. My first time there, and I interrupted his sweeping to ask about hinges and screen doors. Seems I annoyed him by mentioning both. So without any further questions, he spent 15 seconds showing me the hinge room and recommending the spring type and another 15 sec. griping about how his co-worker had messed up his system. He put a bucket of spring hinges on the table and walked out giving me NO chance to ask a simple question. So I went through the hinges, picked two, and went to ask my question 5 minutes later. By now another customer had come along and he was wheeling and dealing. So i wandered around looking at knobs while I waited. He was complaining about his coworker again and then he said I was looming, and did I have a 2-second question? I said 30 seconds: he said okay, so I asked. He tried to answer while removing a screw, but then told the other fellow I was distracting him. Then he seemed to suggest it was my fault for not telling him it was a metal screen door, and after all, people dont come to Hippo Hardware for metal screen door questions. Bob, I can tell its hard being as cool as you, but itll get easier if you can be as nice as a normal person. But the selection of items was upstairs was so cool, I couldnt give the store only 1 star.

The staff at Hippo hardware takes an uncanny interest in any project you may bring them. The bigger the puzzle, the more they thrive. Tyler in the plumbing department is the epitome of this. He spent at least an hour and a half going over the various options with us for adding a shower to our claw foot tub, eventually converting us into clawfoot tub enthusiasts ourselves. He provided expert advice, and is frankly freaking hilarious. A little, odd, but very funny. Hippo will be a frequent stop for us as we improve our 1907 home. Prices are competitive with online options, but here, you know what youre getting will solve all your problems, and the staff will take time to make sure youre up to the task. Only word of caution, if the staff is busy helping someone, it could be a while, because they tend to get lost in their job.

Since moving to Portland Ive purchased several lighting items from Hippo Hardware that have required rewiring and cleaning. The staff is unbelievably efficient at making a promise on when your purchase will ready for pick-up and taking your money. Each time, however, the pick-up date date rolled by without a call from the store and once contacting the store to inquire, I was met with an unapologetic and rude response for when it might be ready. I think the reality is that they dont begin working until you call. Five weeks seems a bit excessive to rewire a fixture. And dont be fooled, you are not getting a good price. Dusty old stained reproductions at Hippo sell for more than new ones at Rejuvenation. Too many other great options with good service- Ive made my last trip to Hippo!

We went to Hippo for shelves for speakers and came out with shelves and hardware for less than $20. The shelves were actually solid wood cabinet doors from a house built in the 20s. When Bobby saw the brackets wed picked out, he sent us outside with some sandpaper to rough them up, then spray-painted them for us. He also threw in the screws and a screwdriver bit for our drill. This, on top of all the free advice he gave us on installing the shelves! Fantastic experience, will shop here again!

Hippo Hardware, one of Portlands original salvage companies, has something you need for your vintage home or your retro remodel. There are so many nooks and crannies that the first thing you should do is tell a friendly staff member the problem you are trying to solve or what you are looking for. They will direct you to the right place. Whether you need to match a knob or door or are just looking for a rusty spike for an art project, youll find it here.

Called to inquire if they carried parts for lighting fixtures in general. The guy refused to answer, saying he didnt know because he couldnt see the part I was talking about over the phone. I understand how phones work, I was just wondering if they carried parts like that in general, or if it would be a waste of time to come in. Most unhelpful customer service Ive ever encountered. Wont be giving them any more of my business.

the place is a bit cluttered, but staff is helpful. ive personally noted they dont sell shower curtains, but theyve got a bit of an array of shelving-pegs, and a decent return policy. that older gentleman that runs the cash register mid-way through the store is such a pleasure to be around ... always so life-loving and jovial. even if they dont have what youre looking for, this guyll do what he can to brighten your day.

You can not come here expecting cheep deals anymore which is disheartening to say the least. I guess it is now trendy to shop here and the pricing reflects that. Yes i will come back even if just to look. (Tip: fun to try and count how many hippos you can spot)

Hippo Hardware definitely has her thumb on the pulse of Portland: Recycling awesome antiques and selling them for a tidy profit! Great customer service and one of a kind items are quite awesome. Check out the top floor for a chandelier surprise.

Always a pleasure to go to Hippos. James in plumbing took great care of me and even explained to me what to do to fix my shower diverter once I got back home. Works like a charm! Thank you!

Very interesting finds here. If you want to outfit your house with vintage everything, this is the place. Be prepared to drop a lot of cash to get it though. Vintage dont come cheap.

I bought picture molding hanging hooks from a regular hardware store, but they dont fit like the bins and bins of old ones here, this place is THE place for older PDX homes!

Great stuff and lots of antiques but way way overpriced. Youre better off going to the recycling center on Mississippi Ave or looking online for a better deal

Dont go here unless you are in the mood for a scavenger hunt. But, if you are in the right mood, this place has tons of fantastic treasures.

So much random stuff. Great place to go if you have an old house and need to find replacement pieces. Know what you want before you go.

I have always enjoyed discovering items from the past to blend with the construction of our home...I will miss them when they are gone

Great place to meander looking for drawer pulls or old windows. A fun stop even if youre not in the market for something specific.
