Winks is good in general, having probably one of the best hardware selections in Portland. But, remember that the sales people are just "sales people" -- they want to sell product. If you rely on their expertese or their knowledge of the quality of the the products they sell, you will get shortchanged. We were looking for a superior quality star drive 3" self tapping wood screw to put together some temporary architectural concrete formwork. We wanted a hardened screw that would not break off when removed (my pet peeve with cheap screws made in China). The salesman assured me that the screws we were purchasing were the best. We were in for a rude surprise when we tried to remove these screws -- at least one out of five would break at the junction of the thread to the shaft. We have since gone to Portland Fasteners who sell GRK brand screws and they have performed better than any screw I have ever used, and they are not made in China. We contributed the remaining Winks screws to the ReBuilding Center and have marked Winks as our vender of last resort.

having sampled hardware stores in usa, japan, and europe, i have to say that winks is pretty much up there. great selection of items, including such hard-to-find ones as button-head hot rivets -- steel or copper or brass, in all sizes. just take a number and tell the associate what you need and they will take you to the shelves behind the counter or the basement where they keep the special goodies, and they will not rest till you have what you need, even if it is a single, tiny but oh-so-difficult-to-find-elsewhere, left-handed, metric size slot-head screw. so, to sum up: great selection, great products, and great service. and what they dont have, they will find and order for you. i have been going to this store for 12 years now, and some of the associates have been there the entire time -- always a good sign.

WInks carries some very hard to obtain nuts, bolts, sliding hardware, window and door parts, tools, and other things. So much that they require a tour guide to browse most of the hardware. (Not so great if your a fabricator looking for the perfect piece of hardware, and want to browse for posibilites.) They also have a vast array of quality tools. For what they lack in electrical, framing, roofing, and plumbing supplies, there are better places to go close by. They have a lot of stuff too.

Winks is the ONLY place I could find a particular black lamp cord for a hanging light. Love this place. They have all kinds of cool stuff, excellent service and well worth the price. Yes, I got scolded for examining the wiring myself, having missed the sign that said "No Self Service", which I took to mean no cutting without a staff person. Seemed stupid that I couldnt just look. Perhaps a misinterpretation of company policy.

Ive been going to Winks for 40+ yrs. Its by far the best hardware store in the continental United States (Ive been to 45 of the 50 States and hardware stores in most of them). I still miss going to the old location in NW Davis w/my dad but the "new" location is better! You wont find a more helpful staff or shelves of nearly anything to solve your problems in this City. LONG LIVE WINKS!!!

I am a home owner/remodeller and am always in need of the usual hardware items, but more importantly the obscure. Winks has both! Always! Provided by friendly and knowledgeable staff that have been there for years. Buy only what you need, 1 item or a bunch...no clutter in your tool box and you can be a wise consumer. The kids and I love to go to Winks.

It seems every time I go to Winks they do not have what I want in stock. The last time I went there I even called beforehand to check that they had what I needed... the guy on the phone, said they had it. But when I got there it was out of stock. When I pointed out this out to the salesperson he could have cared less. I wont be going back.

All of the employees that I encountered were basically jerks. Insincere, no eye contact, probably didnt even care whether I was giving them my business or not. I dont usually take time to review places, but these guys earned it. They probably carry quality products, but as far as helping a customer out, they fail. Hard.

Excellent selection of products, very poor parking, heavy traffic. Plan on spending lots of time... I live 2 miles away and it took 45 minutes to find parking and 25 minutes to get CS to write up parts I picked myself in less than two minutes. You cant go through chech out without going through CUSTOMER SERVICE... why?

Ace does not. The first time in there I got yelled at and I mean yelled at for crossing a yellow line that I was not aware should not be crossed. You can not browse through the nuts and bolts. To top it off they are pricey. If they dont have it at Ace go here and they might, thats my rule. Oh yeah closed SAT and SUN.

Twice this week I needed advice on plumbing parts and both times their staff, very knowledgeable, spent 10 min and 15-20 min to find the right solution for me. It gives me confidence when the attitude is " if we dont have it well make it " Thank you !

Sure they are not as big as a Lowes but someone actually helps you figure out what you need and if they dont have it there they get it for you and give you a buzz when its in. They are why I drive past the closer stores and head to WINKS

Best hardware store in town. Huge inventory behind the counter and in the basement. Many of the employees have worked there for decades, and are very knowledgeable and friendly. Be kind and respectful, this is a local business!

Great store and excellent service. Watch out for the parking patrol, they fill the retirement coffers by making circles around this block. Stand back and watch, its like a hamster wheel.
