We bought a used 2004 CRF250R recently. Bike ran good for a short time, then it wouldn’t kick start (required bump starting). Did a little research and concluded that most likely it was caused by intake valves that needed service. We don’t have any experience with any shops in the area so we gave TPS a shot at earning our ongoing business. Had the experience gone well and their prices reasonable, I would rather use them rather than spend time learning to work on four strokes (grew up riding 2 strokes). We took the bike to TPS and told them it wouldn’t kick start and suspected it was intake valves. Asked them to diagnose it with the hope the valves could be shimmed. From what I read this was a quick job for a trained mechanic and less than 2 hours labor. TPS informed us it will be a $100 flat charge to diagnose the issue. We agree and left the bike. Unfortunately, this is where it became disappointing. They called and said they checked the air filter, spark plug and compression. None of which we asked them to do. They inform us these checks used up the $100 diagnoses fee, and they needed another $100 to pull off the valve cover and check the valve clearance (which is what we wanted to begin with). I totally don’t buy that checking a plug, filter and compression should cost $100. Now it will cost $200 just to simply diagnose what I already suspect is wrong, forget about actually having the issue addressed. This is unacceptable in my opinion (to pay $200 to diagnose intake valve clearance). But, they have the bike at this point I agree in the hopes that for the $200 they would shim the valves if that is a possibility. I was left with the impression that this price would include adjusting the valves. Next TPS calls to say one of the intakes valves is down to no clearance as we suspected. The other is also out of spec. Shimming the valves will provide some clearance but not enough to get back to factory spec. Based on the bike being 10 years old (and not knowing its maintenance history), they recommend replacing the crank, piston, rings, and a full valve job: $2,000. I’m not ready to sign up for that kind of money (we only paid $1,600 for the bike). I decline any further work and say I want to come get the bike. At this point I figure it is time to learn how to service a four stroke myself, which is fine. We shimmed the valves ourselves and the bike now starts on the first kick and runs great. We fully realize this isn’t a long term solution (it will need a valve job soon), but it is what we asked for and TPS refused and also was unwilling to explain to us why they wouldn’t adjust the valves. TPS stood by the fact that they think it is reasonable to charge $200 for the little bit of work they did. I don’t know their labor bill rate, but even at $50 an hour that would imply four hours. I just don’t buy that they spent 4 hours on the bike. They offered $10 off. TPS were simply not willing to be flexible. We ride the bike occasionally to keep an eye on our younger kids learning to ride. We don’t race. We don’t need the bike to run at optimal performance at all times. TPS from our experience was not willing to be flexible on a solution to this issue short of a full top to bottom rebuild. Unfortunately, our first experience with TPS will be our last. Very short sighted point of view by TPS as I really did want to save time by having a shop to help with this type of ongoing maintenance. I don’t recommend TPS.

I am quite certain TPS tried to scam and/or lie to me. Did I go to a different TPS than what people are leaving reviews for? I first went to TPS based off of the high ratings on Google and convenience/location to my house. I initially called TPS for an oil change for an 02 GSXR 600. I asked if they had a spring maintenance check special where they check/change the needed fluids and they said they did. I also mentioned my bike had been ridden almost every week this winter. After asking for a quote I was told it would be $129 for oil change & fluid checks. Upon arriving I was handed a bill for $196 dollars. I stated what I was quoted that $129 and they said I was mistaken. Okay, fine. I was on a tight schedule so I could not really argue or go somewhere else. So later in the day I get a call stating that my brake pads need to be replaced- front and back. I thought that sounded odd because they were brand new just about 3500 miles ago- but I ride kinda hard so i thought it may be possible. I asked for a quote and was told it would be nearly $400 (I believe the actual quote was like $392). This sounded extremely high to me. My other motorcycle, an 87 Yamaha Radian, had the brakes replaced for less than half that. So I hung up and called a friend of mine that owns multiple bikes (5+) and asked if this sounded reasonable. He said what I was thinking- this seems like double the price it should be. Thinking I may have misheard I called back and asked what this all covered. I hadnt misheard- just the brake pads (front and rear) and labor- nearly $400. This obviously sounded quite extreme price wise so I said I was going to wait. I was then told "I WOULD DO IT RELATIVELY SOON, IT COULD BE DANGEROUS- THEY ARE QUITE LOW". So I ended up bringing it to another shop in Durham yesterday. Told them I needed all brake pads replaced. I was given a quote of $212. Now here is where it gets interesting. I am sitting in the waiting room when the tech comes out and asks me if I really want the front pads replaced- THAT THEY HAVE OVER 50%! I couldnt believe what I was hearing. If a mechanic tells you that something doesnt need to be replaced- it definitely doesnt need to be replaced. He also happened to mention that the chain was too tight and the nut on the back axle was over-tightened. I feel as if TPS were completely trying to scam and take advantage of me. I would highly recommend going somewhere else. I now question every bit of work they said they did.

Amazing dealership. I started the process of fixing my bike in Late May of 2012. The first dealership that I brought it to in Danville VA, started the process by sending me through hoops to jump through, not calling me back, ordering parts late, and Basically avoiding me at all cost. I had the bike transferred to this dealership, after speaking with the service department about my complications with the old place, and even though they are moving there dealership to Raleigh, they were willing to take on a large project (Bike initially diagnosed by Danville dealership as needing a 3-4000 engine job). After the bike was at the dealership for one day I received a call saying the bike was there. Two days later I was told that they had ordered a part from Kawasaki and the bike was going to be fixed for $117!!! I was shocked an amazed I couldn’t believe it. The other dealership would have had the bike completely torn apart and charged me thousands. The next weekend I went down to talk with the service manager and he said that the bike was already fixed and took me out back to have a listen (the bike initially had a engine tick). I did have some cosmetic things done on the bike and ordered parts myself and had the dealership put the parts on. They said that it would be done in 3-4 days. So what one dealership in Danville took 5 months to tell me that it would be two-four weeks and cost 3-4K to fix, ended up costing me $117 and was done in less than two weeks from receipt to finishing. I am completely amazed at this dealership and defiantly the best Kawasaki dealership in the area. Do not hesitate under any circumstance to bring your bike here. The techs are awesome, the follow up is awesome, the skill is awesome, the customer service is awesome, they are very very nice people, and they really know how to take care of a customer. They are moving to Raleigh in November, and will most definitely be the best servicing dealer in the area!!! I cannot say enough about their customer service and how happy they made me! They should offer a course to other Kawasaki dealers in how to take care of their customer!
