Hearns sold me a decent used bike. Thats about all I can give them credit for. I took it in a couple of weeks ago and asked the service guy to replace the break pads and give the bike a thorough "going over" to make sure it was safe and everything was in good shape. Those were my exact words. I paid a lot of money to get this done. The service guy told me what a hard time hed had bleeding the brakes, etc, but that it was done. When I picked up the bike and went to bent creek to ride the same day, I had very little front brake at all at first, then none. I took it back to hearns. They replaced the hand grip and charged me an additional $25. I didnt agree with this but I paid it and went on. 2 rides later Im deep in the woods when I loose my rear brake.. Completely. Seriously? So, a little bruised and really ticked off from the wipe out on the way back down the mountain when the brakes failed, I took it back to Hearns again where they explained to me how this is all a big, strange coincidence. I told them I really didnt expect to have to pay for this repair. I had made it clear exactly what I wanted done in the first place and thats what I had paid for.. Or so I thought.. They agreed to no fee this time and said they would replace the other hand grip. Ok, Im a girl. Ive explained to these guys I need to be able to trust them. Im not very knowledgeable about the brake system. I was however, losing trust in them. When I picked up the bike, after a lot of attitude and several condescending comments from the service guy, and the owner trying to justify his crappy service. On my way to Bent Creek to ride, I decided to stop by Carolina Fatz to see if someone would mind to look over my bike. At this point I just didnt feel good about Hearns and I did not feel safe. The owner, Jason, dropped what he was doing to check on things for me. When he took my bike off the rack and rode it in the parking lot, fully engaging the rear brake, he was still able to pedal my bike through the lot. (I feel like Ive been kicked in the teeth!) He took the bike into his shop and pulled the front and rear brakes apart in front of me. I wish I could post a picture here of what he described as "screwdriver notches" where the pads had been pried out. Huge chunks were gone from the pads and they had been contaminated. He and his staff then checked over everything to find that the lines need to be flushed too... (Are you kidding me?) So, now Im left with having spent too much money on a half ass job done by a service guy with an attitude who got ticked off because I brought my bike in with an issue on something he had done. Im not asking for anything. I just want others to know of my experience. Dont take their word for it at Hearns. Take it apart and have a look or take it to Jason at Carolina Fatz and have him go through it before you buy from Hearns. They claim to thoroughly tune up their used bikes before selling them but after my experience I know their service department is hugely lacking! The difference in service between Hearns and Carolina Fatz is like night and day. I was amazed by the friendly welcome and attention to detail Jason provided. He made sure I saw everything he was doing, while he was doing it, and explained, in detail what I was looking at and what needed to be done. He even managed to do it without bashing Hearns. Judging by his expression, I know that must have been a challenge, but it showed a lot of class. He told me its not safe and explained what has to be done to get it there. I have to have the whole thing done again. Bleeding, pads, everything. Unbelievable. The situation sucks, but lesson learned. Carolina Fatz earned my business today.. and I am busy spreading the word! I was not treated well at Hearns and I was sent away with a mountain bike that was not at all safe. Over all, I would recommend anywhere but Hearns..

I dont know how this place stays in business, between their shotty customer service and them buying cheap crappy used bikes left and right but never seeming to sell them. Well I have to say that after being recommended by a friend of mine, I took in some stuff to sell to them as I did not use it any more. After accepting a price (WAY below what I should have in store credit, but that is my bad). I attempted to order a fork from them in late October I was promised that it would be in by Thanksgiving( Just a few weeks to long for an overnight shipping that the Hawley company offers). After not hearing from them thanksgiving week I called them and it was still not in. So displeased, I drove an hour out of my way to see what the problem was that they had still not ordered it... Well the owner came out to help me and I sat there as he ordered it. Come December 10 and I got a call that the fork was in so again I drove the hour to go pick it up, Needless to say I was excited that I could finally ride my bike, low and behold they had ordered the wrong fork. After informing them of that minor detail the owner promised that he would over night the new (correct) fork from the distributer. I gave him some lead time( a week, should have been plenty) and called again to see if it had come in. In short, no he had not even ordered it yet. I had to wait until late January( after no less than a call a week reminding them that they had $500 of my money since October) to receive my fork. The staff is split on helpfulness some are great and patient while others were annoyed that I actually wanted things that I had payed for and expected them to get them in a reasonable amount of time. In short, I will never do business there again and recommend that others stay away from ordering parts from them as well.

I dunno if its just bad luck, but im beginning to doubt it. Im not sure what they are doing there. Initially i really liked the place. I had just a simple tube replaced and paid for a basic tune up which was reasonably priced. Upon leaving with my newly installed tube i made it about a half mile before its blew out randomly on me. So i came back and it was discovered that the back tire was the problem (though i dont see how that was overlooked to begin with since it appeared pretty obvious). In any case i pay full to have new tires and new tubes installed (one tube free of charge..hurray). Cool deal though, it felt nice to have fresh equipment on my bike. ...Until a gear shifter broke off, which i cant blame them for, but i really wonder why i paid to have them do a "safety inspection" on my bike. Whatever though it wasnt a big deal, im still able to use it. until that is my back tires tube exploded....again...again. i just dont think ill bother going back. not to mention my roommate had a new tire put on replacing a really old one which sucked, but worked well enough. somehow though, the new tired permitted the tube to bust as well. Its simply beyond me how these seemingly simple installations and inspections have brought about disaster and complete inconvenience all at once. These were the first set of problems regarding my bike and hopefully the last once theyre fixed. I say try your luck, some people end up loving it i guess others...not so much.
