The following outlines my experience at Royal Jewelers in Andover. I am very unsatisfied with my experience and will NEVER return. I did not go to Royal Jewelers to purchase jewelry but to have my wedding rings cleaned for free. Let’s just say $350 later, 4 weeks without my rings, and I am very, very unhappy. I went to Royal Jewelers simply because it was the closest jewelry store to my house and I needed my wedding rings cleaned. I walked into Royal Jewelers and the man I spoke to about cleaning my ring started to poke the small side diamonds of my ring with a tool and told me that a couple of the small diamonds were loose. He explained that if I go ahead with the cleaning, it could cause them to become more loose and eventually fall out, so he talked me into getting a quote to see how much it would cost to tighten the channels of the ring to secure the side diamonds. I left my ring at the store and it took a full week to get the quote - $350. I talked to my insurance agent about the risks of not going ahead and having to file a claim later on and decided to go ahead with the service. It took 2 weeks until the ring was ready for pick up. I picked up my ring and started wearing it again. I couldn’t really tell what was done, except that it looked clean and new. Then, after a day or so I noticed that the ring was CUTTING my skin. Some of the metal of where the jeweler worked was up-turned and rough and literally cutting into my skin of my finger. So, I brought the ring back to the store and spoke to a different man. When I explained what was happening, the salesman was adamant that the jeweler would not have touched the area of the ring that was supposedly cutting me and told me that it must have been like that before I brought it in. WHAT? I’ve been wearing my ring for 2 years and now suddenly, after service at this jeweler, it is cutting into my skin. Obviously, whatever the jeweler did caused it. The salesman brought the ring “around back” to see if the jeweler could “smooth it out” while I was there. 10 minutes later he returned my ring and absolutely nothing had changed. I left the store extremely upset and returned the next day with my husband. We spoke to the salesman who originally convinced me to get the service done. He felt how the ring was rough and had me leave it for the week for the jeweler to smooth out the roughness. It takes another week for the jeweler to “smooth out” my ring. Not sure if they send the jewelry out or if the jeweler is only part-time, but not sure why it took at least a week each time to perform service or get a quote. I return a week later to pick up my ring and the salesman explains to me how they smoothed down the beads on my ring. Now, I had beads installed on the inside of my ring when I first got it to prevent it from spinning. The beads had no part in what was cutting my skin, I showed the salesman where it was cutting me and you could literally see the burr of metal on the very edge of the inside channel. I had been wearing my rings with the beads for 2 years and no problems. The ring does not appear to be cutting me anymore, but now that the beads were smoothed out, my ring is, of course, spinning again. Although on their website, the salesman are supposedly “not commission-based”, every time I walked into the store I got a feeling like they were. I will never return to this store and am very unsatisfied with my experience from start to finish. I went in for a routine free cleaning and came out $350 later, 4 weeks without my ring, and now my ring spins on my finger.

Marie was a terrible sales person. I was looking to purchase a larger diamond for a solitaire setting. According to Marie, there were no solitaire settings; just settings with side diamonds. One setting she showed me, had two diamonds on each shoulder: a bagette and a round. The bagette didnt shine, even under their bright lights. When I asked what color grade and clarity the stones were, Marie replied, "our customers demand the best and thats what they get". But, I didnt ask what her customers wanted, Id asked what the color and clarity were. She gave me the exact same phrase when I asked about Royals diamond earring jackets. When pressed, she said, with obvious pride, that they were J and I grade. Thats the best? The employees must be writing in the reviews for Bostons Best, otherwise I cant understand what the hype is all about. To get a second opinion about the shop, I did return on Maries day off to see another salesman, but it was clear that Royal was unable to meet the prices of other area jewelers, and Royals stones werent as good. They offer appraisals from the EGL and the GIA, but even the second salesman said EGL wasnt as good as the GIA. Listen up people - when you have GIA-certified diamonds, it affords you the opportunity to compare apples to apples. Dont pay Royals high prices and put up with bad service. Ohhh, and a heads up: check out their return policy. If you purchase jewelry for Christmas, better buy it that week, because they dont allow for returns more than 7 days after purchase, just store credit. In addition, one customer was trying to get them to repair her necklace she was given for Christmas (three weeks earlier), and she was getting quite a song and dance about why the repair wouldnt be covered. As for me, I found the perfect diamond, for a superb price at Amoroso Jewelers in Boston, a family-owned, custom shop. Definitely worth the commuter rail trip. I saved more than $4,000.

Cant say enough about Paula, Steve and the staff at Royal Jewelers! I had bought my wife a necklace two years ago, eyeing a pair of earrings that went well with the necklace. I decided not to buy the earrings at that time. I walked in the day before Mothers Day this May, two years later, having not had the chance to get back in the store since. I was hoping that the earrings might still be available or possibly could have them ordered. I walk over to say hi to Paula, started to ask her about the earrings, she says she remembers the necklace and earrings and tells me she had set them aside for me. I think most jewelers might set them aside for a few weeks or months, and then put them back on display to sell them. I was truly floored! I bought the earrings and my wife was surprised and thrilled. Paula has always been able to find the most unique pieces that my wife loves. She remembers the pieces she has sold, and Im sure that goes for every client! Priceless!!

I am a long term Royal shopper and extremely happy customer! I have been shopping at Royal Jewelers in excess of 20 years and I have received the finest service with a company that stands behind their products. I find their sales people professional and knowledgable about their products whether I am purchasing high end watches, purchasing diamonds, resetting diamonds (soooo fun), or purchasing more casual pieces. I am not someone who typically writes reviews but shopping at Royal Jewelers is always and enjoyable experience and I have never left feeling their pricing was anything but extremely competitive. I have enjoyed my purchases as the quality and selection is unparalled.
