We bought a bird from the Fish Nook only after them assuring us multiple times that he was a hand-fed, local-bred bird that was only a few months old (what all the books tell you too look for). Every piece of information they gave us about birds was false (recommended cages that were too small, toys that were made for the wrong types of birds, and an all-seed diet that was listed as incredibly unhealthy by every book we read). However, we had completely fallen in love with the bird himself, and so we decided we would just ignore their recommendations and purchase everything elsewhere. We said we were curious about his exact hatch date but were practically out the door by the time we remembered to ask, and they told us if we called them back they could look it up in their records for us. We completely forgot to follow up on it, but remembered a couple of months later. Upon calling them we were informed that he wasnt locally bred (he was actually born somewhere in Florida), was sold to a bird wholesaler (with no concrete information on his age) and then later bought by the Fish Nook. Further questioning revealed that he was far older than what they had indicated to us, and that he wasnt hand fed because: "that makes birds bite everyone but the person that fed them while they were a baby" -- which is blatantly wrong if you do your research. In short, everything they told us was wrong and misleading. Although this only covers an experience with birds, I expect this total mistreatment of customers and animals occurs in all species they deal with, and I would highly recommend looking anywhere but the Fish Nook for animals, supplies and information.

They have a little bit of everything at a higher price than most other local pet stores. From the perspective of an aquarium owner, they stock a decent supply of supplements. Some freshwater and marine fish selection. Some corals. Prices on livestock arent too bad, and they purport all fish are quarantined for 2 weeks before sale which I like. Very knowledgeable staff (but always verify what a local fish store tells you for your own sake), and they ARE willing to special order items for you and supposedly at competitive price. Now.. the downside. They can be expensive. Most all supplements are overpriced. Tanks. Far overpriced. A ~30 gal tank there was -twice- the going market price. So know the value of something before to plop down cash for it. Be an educated consumer. It isnt the stores fault. It is yours for paying a stores high prices. If you dont buy it, they cant sell it. As a result the market will force them to lower prices. One stop shopping never is a good idea anyhow. If you think something is overpriced. Tell them. $24 for a bottle of a supplement you can get for $15 elsewhere? Tell them and buy it elsewhere. $39 for glass tank cover you can buy for $21 elsewhere? Tell them. Buy it elsewhere. Theyll get the idea.

Do not buy animals from here. My friend bought a few guppies from their store, and from the pictures she sent, all of their animals, and I mean ALL of them, were kept in awful conditions. She bought some from there to diversify her colonys genetics, and I took a few in her tank a week later and put the fish in two quarantine tanks I had a few other fish living in temporarily. Now four of our tanks have been infected with roundworm, a disease that is both almost impossible to eradicate in the aquarium, and is contagious to humans. The guppies have been breeding in the quarantine tanks for 7 months now, and its absolutely heart wrenching to see them die off so often and so gruesomely. We will be euthanizing them all via clove oil next week, because weve tried everything there is. Every medication, every technique, everything. If I could give this store a lower review, I would. Please do not buy fish or any other animal from them, your health might really depend on it.

Lots of people writing reviews have said that the staff are terrible but I think they have really been helpful. Once someone who worked there sat down with us and worked for a long time to fix a problem with our hamsters cage. The fish are really pretty but there aquariums dont look very clean. Also, the place itself doesnt look very clean. I think that the rodents there are taken pretty good care of, but some of the cages arent big enough. One guinea pig was half the size of his cage. The Guinea Pigs and Hamsters are very tame. We have bought two Hamsters there and two Guinea pigs. All have been playful and happy. Lastly, we boarded our Guinea pigs at the fish nook once, and when we got there, the cage was due for a cleaning and no water was in their bottle. To sum it up, I think that the Fish nook deserves three out of five stars.

My mom and I often go to the Fish Nook to get food for our guinea pig (who we adopted from Petco). However, we highly dislike going there because the animals are kept in a horrible condition. The rabbits are kept in tiny cages despite their size and get no exercise. All they do is sit there silently. Last time my best friend went there she didnt see a food bowl in one of their cages, and her family was sold things they didnt need or want. Twice, me and my mom have walked in with more than half the pets water bottles empty. The cages are dirty and none of the animals are happy or well taken care of. Overall, the Fish Nook does not nurture or care for these animals, and they should not be living in this condition. If you want to get a pet, go a proper company that will properly take care of these pets.

Please do not buy animals in this store. They keep them in terrible conditions. The cages are small and dirty. It looks they never were cleaned. Animals even dont have clean water. For example rabbit doesnt have space to stretch. I have no idea how healthy animal can live in such conditions. But after reading other reviews I understood they just feed them antibiotics to hide sickness. The animal should have vet record that says it doesn’t have any disease especially Chlamydia. I asked about one pet and salesperson told me it doesn’t have any vet records but it healthy. What else he could tell me? It was very painful to look at all of this. I had filling that some animals emotionally gave up on their life. How other people could gave more than one star to this place?

I live in Acton and have kept fish of all varieties for more than 25 yrs. Simply because they are local Ive gone into the Fish Nook from time to time, mainly to buy crickets or feeder goldfish. I can honestly say I cringe every time I go in there. They have a never ending supply of long haired, sloppy looking employees who are beyond rude. They seem to delight in passing themselves off as experts in everything even though Ive heard them give out bad advice time and time again. Prices are a joke and reflect what the owner Bill thinks he can get away with from an upper-middle class town such as Acton. Ask them a simple question and you get the phone book. Its a bad run operation.
