I walked into Freedom Tattoos with a very kind of specific style of tattoo in mind to be added onto an existing piece and to touch up a part of an older tattoo. The artist, who I am not going to call out by name even though part of me wants to punch is face the next time I see him, sounded very assured and said he could do it. So we booked an appointment and I showed up. I showed him pictures that should have given him a very specific idea of what I wanted and he nodded and went to work. He drew something out that could plausibly turn into what I was looking for but it wasnt long before my eyes popped out of my head because the once he started tattooing the line work was atrocious. He went to work freehand doing this type of biomechanical hose I wanted (which shouldnt be hard for anybody who calls himself a tattoo artist to do, or anyone with a stencil for that matter) but the hoses were all uneven, skinny in some parts and fat in others. I stopped him in his tracks and he said that it was to give the impression of some parts being near and far, which was bullshit. Also, the lines in the hoses were all unevenly spaced, basically on the level of a 6th grader doodling in his notebook. The shading he did was a complete inconsistent mess, I kept hoping a better picture would form but it just got worse. Then to top it off for the part I asked him to touch up he inexplicably added shading in random parts making it look like a smudged up mess that cant ever be covered or fixed. I also showed him pictures of an alien robot head to give him a flavor of what I had in mind and he gave me Iron Man sucking on a lemon. I was stunned at the carelessness he was bringing to his work and the mounting certainty that he was in over his head so we both agreed before long to just quit while we were behind. I guess I should have taken a closer look at his portfolio but I wasnt asking for anything too complex as far as tattoos go, at least I dont think, and if he didnt think he could do it he should have said so. Now Im in the market for a cover artist. I also sent the artist a polite, tactful email that expressed my concerns and his response was radio silence, which shows how much he cares about his customers. Theres a lot of artists in the area, think twice before trusting these guys.
