RIP Sunset. Though you were wonderful in your time (a little pricey, but hey, this is Northbrook), the new Marianos on Skokie Blvd & Dundee means youll be losing about 30~35% of your customers soon and thats a conservative estimate. Its inevitable. Everyone knows it. Youre living on borrowed time. Hopefully, mgmt isnt in denial. - The question is, how will you respond when the big bad wolf moves less than 2 miles away? Lower prices? Thats a given. Reduce staff? Probably. - Nothing on the grapevine has alerted us to a relocation AND you seem to be constrained to the space you have (is there even enough room to think about expansion?) AND mgmt doesnt seem like it wants to give up, so... might I suggest you stay & fight? - For all its admirable qualities (namely great customer svc), the fact of the matter is the interior & layout of the store looks like it was designed in the early 80s (which it probably was). If Sunset is gonna "stay in the game", not only does she need a legit salad bar (a hot food bar would be nice as well), she needs a complete make-over. - Has anyone over at mgmt ever been to a Marianos? Do you recognize how nice it is in there? Like, shopping there makes you feel wealthy - psychologically massaging the hit you take from paying the higher prices. As it stands right now, how in the world is Sunset gonna compete with that? - The answer is: it cant. So heed my words of free advice: DO THE MAKEOVER. Painful it may be at first, it will give you a fighting chance in the years to come. Ignore it, and all youll be left with are elderly customers b/c the younger demographic really dont care (much) about having their groceries loaded unto their trunks. Theyll be too busy eating steak (FYI: Marianos grills it before your eyes).

The best thing about this store is the customer service. You just cant find any other grocery store like them, at least in this area. Their motto is "people are friendlier around Sunset" and I find, to my surprise, that this pertains not only to the staff but also to the people who shop there. You almost never have to wait at the checkout. At the chain stores they have 10 check stands and one person working. At Sunset they have 6 or more check stands with people waiting to help you at every one. They insist on taking the items out of your cart or basket for you. Then they put your food items in good quality bags that dont break and bring them to your car (if you wish). Yes, some things do cost more, but not everything, and they make up for that with great service. The produce is excellent. You cant get anything fresher unless you go to the farmers market. Theres a café on the upper level that is equipped with an interesting machine that plays popular music of bygone days. It features an automated accordion and assorted percussion instruments. It uses paper tape, like a player piano. Its great fun to watch, and its fairly loud. One time I played it, I got a pretty stern lecture from a lady who was there to play bridge with her friends (boo hoo)! Anyway, if youve ever been to Wall Drug you probably saw one of these. If you have kids, they will love watching this thing play! Bring a few quarters along (it costs 25 cents).

Sunset is a staple here in Northbrook. Their customer service has no compare, they are amazing! I find their meats top notch and only buy mine there. The selection of organic foods has been greatly expanded. They will do anything for you!!! They have a lovely cafe to have a meal or sit and visit with a cup of coffee. A great deli with ore prepared foods as well. I find their produce of late really pricey and not as fresh as it should be for the money.

Wonderful local grocery store right in downtown Northbrook. Not the biggest store, but the selection is very good and quality is excellent. Deli Counter is amazing and Service is outstanding. Car loading and delivery is also available. Not the cheapest store in the world, but you get what you pay for.
