My wife and I decided to try Village Market Place for the first time this week. First off, I noticed that the store is extremely crowded with products cluttering the isles. It is truly single file especially if you want to push a cart. We were disappointed in the selection of produce to begin compared with our old standby Market Place on Oakton also in Skokie. We were not able to locate any organic produce or staff to inquire about. We bought some peaches and brought them home to find out they were inedible and mealy. I tried to return them a few days later and the manager on duty told me since I didnt have my receipt that I was obviously lying and that they had to be at least 2 weeks old. I said, it was fair that they wouldnt take them back without a receipt, but I would like to try the piece of fruit before I bought peaches again. He told me, “that if I want to try it, I had to buy it”. I asked, “How can I tell if the fruit is any good? He said, “It is because I buy it everyday”. I then proceeded to buy 1 peach so I could try it again. I went across the street to Starbucks to wash it off and took a bite. Sure enough, the ripe looking and feeling peach was mealy and not up to par. I went back to the store and wanted to show the manager. He was in the parking lot yelling at customers that were trying to park as the delivery truck was parking. I waited and told him politely that I would to discuss his peaches. He told me to wait and then walked back in the store and left me outside waiting. I had to track him down in the store and showed him the peach. I told him that I respect his business and obviously he had a great business, as it was so busy and crowded. I told him that this peach I had just bought (I was holding my receipt) was not good. He again had no desire to speak with me and he walked off. I thought he was going to refund my money. I told him that I’m not interested in a refund, but I would like some help picking out my fruit. He said, “Thanks for the advice” he said, and walked off rudely again. I’m really not that mad about the $4 I originally spent on the fruit. I just frustrated by the principle of rudeness and the way this guy is running the business. I was truly hopeful about The Village Market Place as it is closer to my house, but now I will not be returning, and sticking with my old standby Market Place on Oakton. This is truly a wonderful, positive, and great fruit market with friendly staff and awesome peaches!

Im being reasonable with this two star. The meat. Fish and grocery is fine and has a broad selection but the service I received at the check out was atrocious. The cashier was completely incompetent, he was stunned to learn that pins could be longer the 4 digits. This was only after their machine didnt let me enter my pin because of too many digits. I mean it was only six digits and I couldnt enter more than 5?!? Then the very disguised manager who was packing our bags said oh, what you have a 5 digit pin to which my response was my pin is my pin and I know my pin... This really shouldnt have been a big deal to them but hey that was only the start. Proceeded with credit because my pin wasnt working. Pulled out the card after the machine said it was accepted. The cashier then takes my card and inserts it again saying it was denied and said no dont do that it was accepted and he said no the receipt didnt print so it was denied. I used to be a cashier at Whole foods and understood what he was talking about but I knew it had gone through. He went through all of the questions himself without my consent and asked only for my signature. I left and immediately checked my bank knowing it had gone through twice and what a surprise it had gone through twice over 160$ dollars charges twice. Unacceptable. I went back for a refund and the half baked manager was utterly disgusting in how he handled I was upset because I knew his employe had been wrong and keep on mind all the previous events happend right on front of him because he was packing the bags. He refused to give the refund saying I have been in this business for a while and thats just the holding its processing. I realized he was waiting my time and called my bank while he went off to do absolutely nothing of importance. The bank confirmed that the first charge went through and that the store had cancelled the second charge. Thankfully, I got the money back, but the manager must have done it when he was off calling the processing company. Never once letting us know that he was doing that. Just a rude and delusional manager and incompetent cashier. Repulsed, I just cant understand how this man was the manager.

They have great prices on produce here! They also have a pretty awesome deli section but its more european style deli here. The prices are great here! For the same amount you would spend at Whole Foods you can come here 2-3 times at least. Staff is pretty friendly and almost never any lines to go through checkout. Parking is almost never an issue and its a great little spot. If you live in the area or a 10 mile radius I would def give them a try. You wont find much organic stuff here but they recently started adding some. Def less expensive than Jewel and many of my friends go here on a weekly basis. But avoid the strawberries - I think they get a later batch and they go bad within a day.

I have to write again about my experience. I bought Pollock frozen fish couple days ago. On the label it says "Pollack" though. Defrosted in a refrigerator today the fish lost almost a pound out of 2.275 lb!!! What is left is about 1.3 lb uneatable, dull, sponge like substance. It appears that they thaw and refreeze the fish multiple times, otherwise its not easy to obtain such dull sponginess. On the label I found only one date April 18th (today is April 27th). Its unclear from the label whether its a "packed on" or "sell by" date. Disappointed!!!

Since I moved to the suburbs, I discovered the Village Market. They have the best prices on meat, deli, yogurt and eggs. Very good prices (if not the cheapest) on veggies and fruit (which are all fresh). Plus, you can get various foods from around the world that you cant find elsewhere. I highly recommend Village Market.

So glad I shopped here. I found everything I was looking for, staff is very helpful, polite, and the best part is that despite the lines at the checkouts we were out in no time. Keep up the great work Village Market!
